Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work by the world's preeminent authority on Arctic floras--the first comprehensive, up-to-date botanic manual for this region--is the product of the author's more than forty years of study of circumpolar floras. The book describes and illustrates all flowering plants and vascular cryptograms known to occur in Alaska, the Yukon, the Mackenzie District, and the eastern extremity of Siberia. Some 1,974 taxa, belonging to 1,559 species, occur in this region; all are described. For 1,735 of these, the book provides detailed description, nomenclature, plant drawing, and range maps. In each case, one map gives distribution in the Alaskan region; a second, on circumpolar projection, gives worldwide range. This volume is the first major flora to assemble such comprehensive range data and to provide such maps. An analytic key to all species described is provided for each genus, and there is an artificial key to families. An Introduction describes the past and present climatic, geologic, and ecologic character of the regions covered, the history of botanical collection in these regions, and the book's treatment of botanical and taxonomic details; and lists the plants of neighboring regions likely to occur. Glossary, plant authors' list, bibliography, and indexes are provided. The superb drawings were prepared by Dagny Tande-Lid, and eight pages of illustration in color are included.

However, its forests and woodlands are being cleared at an alarming rate. With few exceptions, the country has no inventory of its trees and shrubs, the component that forms the web or skeleton of Mozambique's vegetation. Trees and Shrubs of Mozambique provides the first accurate and comprehensive account of the woody plants of Mozambique and their distribution and how to identify them through the use of keys, descriptions and illustrations. Aimed at botanists - both amateur and professional - conservationists, foresters, university and secondary school students, NGOs and eco-tourists, this book covers some 1,780 species of trees and shrubs, illustrated with over 9650 colour photographs, as well as leaf line drawings and distribution maps." --Cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Flowers of Yellowstone National Park In this book, technical terms and treatment have been avoided whenever possible. For the most part the genus is the smallest group considered, as the average visitor is not interested in fine distinctions among species; and even if he were he would get small comfort from the professional botanists, who are too often in hopeless disagreement among them selves. For those who are interested in more exact determinations, there is no substitute for the complete floras of Coulter ah-d Nelson and of Rydberg, covering the whole Rocky Mountain region. Mention must also be made of Rocky Mountain Flowers, by Clements and Clements, a work combining a high degree of scientific accuracy with adaptability for popular use, and illustrated with finely colored plates. N o artificial key has been included in this work, for it has been the writer's experience that these are rarely, if ever, used by the layman. The usual prae tice is to turn the leaves of the book until a picture is found that corresponds with the flower under ex amination. The plants are grouped according to their growth form, as trees, shrubs ah-d herbs, but beyond that they are left in approximately the same order in which their family affinities place them. This sets flowers of similar form and evolutionary history together, and has at least the virtue of being a natural arrange ment.
