Book excerpt: In the lush, vibrant landscapes of medieval Albania, a tale of love, valor, and patriotism unfolds in "Florante at Laura," the magnum opus of Francisco Balagtas. This epic poem, written in Tagalog, weaves a narrative rich in romance and heroism, capturing the essence of an era marked by chivalry and strife. The story centers around Florante, a noble and valiant prince, and his beloved Laura, set against the backdrop of a kingdom besieged by political turmoil and treachery. Balagtas masterfully crafts a tapestry of emotions and events, depicting the trials and tribulations of his protagonists with poetic elegance. From the dark forests where Florante finds himself imprisoned, reflecting on his misfortunes and the betrayal of his kingdom, to the grand palaces where love and loyalty are put to the test, every stanza of this epic is infused with a sense of timelessness and poignancy. The characters’ struggles against oppression and their unwavering commitment to justice and love resonate deeply, making "Florante at Laura" a cornerstone of Philippine literature. Key Points: Historical and Cultural Significance: "Florante at Laura" is not just a tale of romance and adventure; it is also a reflection of the socio-political landscape of the Philippines during Balagtas' time, subtly critiquing Spanish colonial rule and advocating for national identity and freedom. Complex Characters: The poem delves into the depths of its characters' psyches, presenting Florante as a hero marked by both strength and vulnerability, and Laura as a symbol of unwavering fidelity and grace. Poetic Mastery: Balagtas' use of classical Tagalog language and poetic forms showcases his literary prowess, making the poem a lyrical masterpiece that has endured through centuries. Themes of Love and Patriotism: The narrative intertwines personal love with patriotic duty, emphasizing the importance of both in the face of adversity and injustice. Moral and Ethical Reflections: "Florante at Laura" is rich with moral lessons, exploring themes such as the triumph of good over evil, the value of integrity, and the power of forgiveness. "Florante at Laura" by Francisco Balagtas is a timeless epic that continues to inspire and move readers with its lyrical beauty and profound messages. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, the quest for justice, and the resilience of the human spirit. For those who seek a narrative that is both intellectually enriching and emotionally stirring, this work is an essential addition to any literary collection.

Book excerpt: Celebrating the centennial of his birth, the first-ever U.S. publication of Philippine writer Nick Joaquin’s seminal works, with a foreword by PEN/Open Book Award–winner Gina Apostol A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice Nick Joaquin is widely considered one of the greatest Filipino writers, but he has remained little-known outside his home country despite writing in English. Set amid the ruins of Manila devastated by World War II, his stories are steeped in the post-colonial anguish and hopes of his era and resonate with the ironic perspectives on colonial history of Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. His work meditates on the questions and challenges of the Filipino individual’s new freedom after a long history of colonialism, exploring folklore, centuries-old Catholic rites, the Spanish colonial past, magical realism, and baroque splendor and excess. This collection features his best-known story, “The Woman Who Had Two Navels,” centered on Philippine emigrants living in Hong Kong and later expanded into a novel, the much-anthologized stories “May Day Eve” and “The Summer Solstice” and a canonic play, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. As Penguin Classics previously launched his countryman Jose Rizal to a wide audience, now Joaquin will find new readers with the first American collection of his work. Introduction and Suggestions for Further Reading by Vicente L. Rafael For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Promise of the Foreign, Vicente L. Rafael argues that translation was key to the emergence of Filipino nationalism in the nineteenth century. Acts of translation entailed technics from which issued the promise of nationhood. Such a promise consisted of revising the heterogeneous and violent origins of the nation by mediating one’s encounter with things foreign while preserving their strangeness. Rafael examines the workings of the foreign in the Filipinos’ fascination with Castilian, the language of the Spanish colonizers. In Castilian, Filipino nationalists saw the possibility of arriving at a lingua franca with which to overcome linguistic, regional, and class differences. Yet they were also keenly aware of the social limits and political hazards of this linguistic fantasy. Through close readings of nationalist newspapers and novels, the vernacular theater, and accounts of the 1896 anticolonial revolution, Rafael traces the deep ambivalence with which elite nationalists and lower-class Filipinos alike regarded Castilian. The widespread belief in the potency of Castilian meant that colonial subjects came in contact with a recurring foreignness within their own language and society. Rafael shows how they sought to tap into this uncanny power, seeing in it both the promise of nationhood and a menace to its realization. Tracing the genesis of this promise and the ramifications of its betrayal, Rafael sheds light on the paradox of nationhood arising from the possibilities and risks of translation. By repeatedly opening borders to the arrival of something other and new, translation compels the nation to host foreign presences to which it invariably finds itself held hostage. While this condition is perhaps common to other nations, Rafael shows how its unfolding in the Philippine colony would come to be claimed by Filipinos, as would the names of the dead and their ghostly emanations.

This set of essays is both timely and original in its focus on the canon in South-East Asian literatures, covering Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. They vary in focus, from the broad panoramic survey of trends in a national literature to very specific discussions of the role of individuals in shaping a canon or the place of a particular text within a tradition, and from contemporary to traditional literature. They include discussions of the development of prose fiction, censorship and artistic freedom, the role of westerners in codifying indigenous literatures, the writing of literary history, the development of literary criticism and indigenous aesthetics.
