Some soybean cultivars tolerate waterlogged soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate tolerance of soybean cultivars to waterlogged soils at different soybean growth stages and flood durations. A selection of maturity group IV soybean cultivars was screened for flood tolerance in the field. Five cultivars were selected for variations in tolerance to waterlogged soil conditions. An experiment was conducted to determine the response of these cultivars to waterlogged soil for 192 h at thee growth stages (V5, R1, and R5). A second experiment was conducted to determine the response of these cultivars to flood for 0, 48, 96, 144, and 192 h at the R1 stage of growth. A significant interaction was found between cultivars and growth stage flooding when exposed to waterlogged soil. The greatest yield suppression from waterlogged soil occurred at the R5 growth stage compared to V5 and R1. Soybean yield suppression due to waterlogged soil was least when flood was applied at V5 compared with the R1 and R5 stages of growth. Flood duration had a significant negative effect on soybean yield (P = 0.0012). When averaged across years and cultivars, soybean yields declined 310 kg ha-1 after being flooded for 192 hours at bloom compared to non-flooded checks. Significant interactions between cultivar and duration were not found.

Wet-soil culture, a relatively new technique of growing soybeans under a high controlled water table, has increased soybean production potential under Australian conditions. Therefore, two field experiments during 1985 and 1986 seasons were conducted with U.S. adapted varieties at the Plant Science Research Center, Mississippi State University. The first study had twenty-four varieties from three different maturity groups tested in three soil moisture regimes: wet-soil culture + N, conventional irrigation and dry. The 1985 season showed low performance of soybean plants grown in wet-soil culture compared to conventional irrigation and dry grown beans. Thiswas due to the water table being higher than intended, which resulted in near flooding. Planting of flat beds contributed to this near flooding situation. By planting on elevated beds in 1986, the wet-soil culture outyielded the other two soil moisture regimes due to better water table control. The second study was a combination of two varieties, five rates of N and two times of initiating wet-soil culture. The varieties were Tracy-M and Centennial (Leflore in 1986). Nitrogen was surface applied as urea at five rates. Time of initiating wet-soil culture was V3 and V8 growth stages. The same problem of near flooding occurred in this experiment, as evidenced by stem splitting. This morphological change was not present in 1986. Seed yield was slightly (...).

Merr.] growth and development, with effects ranging from chlorosis and stunting to yield loss and plant death. Soybean responses to, and the effects of, waterlogging are dependent on the growth stage of the plant at the initiation of waterlogging. The objectives of this study were: (1) to assess the effectiveness of Genomic Selection (GS), Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) and Phenotypic Selection for flood tolerance at the progeny row stage as compared to random selection, for the development of high-yielding flood-tolerant lines; and (2) to compare field-screening and hydroponic greenhouse screening methodologies for hypoxia tolerance. For the first objective, 391 individuals from four populations at the F4:5 generation were either: 1) screened for waterlogging tolerance at the R1 growth stage in observation or first-year yield trial stages; 2) subjected to genomic selection using two different training approaches; 3) underwent marker-assisted selection; or 4) were advanced purely based on agronomic adaptation under non-flooded condition. Subsequently, the tagged selections together with the base populations (control) were entered in a multi-location trial where flood tolerance and yield were assessed, and the responses were compared across the different selection methods. Results from this experiment indicated significant differences between visual selection and the base population, and between genomic selection and base population when long-rows experiment was used in the training set. Random selection and base population were also significantly different on the identification of flood tolerant lines, assessed as tolerance index and probability of discard. Random selection method resulted in the lowest tolerance index and highest probability of discard. We also observed that visual or genomic selection derived from hill plots did not outperform the control in terms of flood tolerance. In addition, all six methods and base populations had similar performance in terms of mean yield. This suggests that breeders must focus on selecting for flood tolerance early in the breeding stages, without major risk of reducing yield potential. For the second objective of this study, a total of 17 soybean genotypes were screened for waterlogging tolerance at the V2 growth stage and under a hydroponic system. Plots of responses by cultivar and test method were analyzed. We observed consistency in results between field and hydroponic system for most of the cultivars, enabling us to discard based on flood susceptibility. Identification of the most efficient selection method for flood tolerance, and the development of a greenhouse screening methodology, will aid plant breeders in developing new flood-tolerant cultivars.

Book excerpt: Flood tolerance in soybean (Glycine max) is not a well-characterized trait, yet flooding damage is second only to drought stress in terms of yield reduction. The objectives of this study were to determine genetic variation for flooding tolerance in two populations of soybean recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and to identify and confirm flood tolerant QTL. Population A (WHA) consisted of 111 RILs derived from the cross 5002T by 91210-350 and Population B (WHB) consisted of 79 RILs from the cross RA-452 by Osage. Experiments were conducted at the Rice Research and Extension Center (RREC) near Stuttgart, AR in 2015 and 2016. Flood damage score (FDS) was rated at three, six, and nine days after the flooding treatment was drained. In addition to FDS, plant population was measured before and after the flooding treatment to calculate the percentage of surviving plants (PS). In 2015, Chlorophyll content was measured using a SPAD meter and normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) was calculated in 2016. Both RIL populations and parents were genotyped using the SoySNP 6k beadchip with 908 and 1,466 polymorphic markers detected in WHA and WHB, respectively. Twenty nine QTL were identified, five of which validate prior studies involving soybean flood tolerance. Logarithm of Odds (LOD) values from ranged from 3.03 to 6.56 with R squared values ranging from 0.09 - 0.29. A QTL was identified on chromosome 7 that was stable across both WHA and WHB. In population WHA, this QTL was associated with both AUFPC and FDS and explained 9-10% of phenotypic variance. In population WHB, this QTL was associated with PS and explained 15% of phenotypic variance. The results of this study will aid in future development of flood-tolerant soybean germplasm and cultivars by validating previously reported QTL and demonstrating the usefulness of instruments in evaluating flood-tolerance.
