Pete and Paul yelled together. 'Bandit! Nine o'clock! Bandit!' Jack spun to stare. There was the Messerschmitt on their left, streaking straight at them. Eighteen-year-old Jack wanted to escape boring little New Zealand. But he soon finds that flying in a Lancaster bomber to attack Hitler’s forces brings terror as well as excitement. With every dangerous mission, he becomes more afraid that he’ll never get back alive. He wants to help win the war, but will he lose his own life? My Brother’s War: '... there are stories that need to be told over and over again, to introduce a new generation of readers to important ideas and to critical times in their country's history ... Hill's descriptions of trench warfare are unforgettable.' from the Judges' Report of the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults 2013

It can be used as a textbook, and will benefit anyone interested in the future of aviation and our planet.
Download or read book The Duel written by Tariq Ali and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world, the only Islamic state to have nuclear weapons, under military dictatorship for 33 of its 50 years in existence. Its 1000-mile border with Afghanistan is the likely hideout of Osama bin Laden--yet it is the linchpin in the United States' war on terror. With increasingly bold attacks by Taliban supporters in the border regions threatening to split the Pakistan army, with the only political alternatives as corrupt as the regime they seek to replace, and with a newly radicalized movement of lawyers testing its strength as champions of the rule of law, the chances of sustained stability in Pakistan look slim. Tariq Ali, long acknowledged as a leading commentator on Pakistan, combines deep understanding of the country with extensive firsthand research and unsparing political judgment to weigh the prospects of those contending for power today.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: There is always a before and an after… Sophie and Miles have a long marriage, twin daughters, a close-knit circle of friends and a happy home, until an accusation of inappropriate sexual conduct with a pupil blows everything apart. Sophie knows Miles as her husband of thirty years, the father to their twins and a dedicated teacher. Could he really be a sexual abuser? As the trial approaches, Sophie must ask herself if Miles is merely a bumbling innocent or a scheming manipulator. Flight Path explores the effect that an accusation of sexual assault has on a family. Guilty or Innocent, nobody wins. “It’s rare to read a novel that is as gripping as it is subtle. Flight Path is that novel. Buried within the story of a marriage coming undone is a compelling exploration of our moral and sexual confusions – and of one of our worst fears: that of the predator. E. J. Pepper delivers a disquieting, absorbing story. Throughout, she reveals our human frailties and bonds with delicacy and power.” Alison MacLeod, Booker prize long-listed author of Unexploded
Book Synopsis Trajectory Control for Vehicles Entering the Earth's Atmosphere at Small Flight-path Angles by : John M. Eggleston
Download or read book Trajectory Control for Vehicles Entering the Earth's Atmosphere at Small Flight-path Angles written by John M. Eggleston and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of controlling the trajectories of high-drag--low-lift vehicles entering the earth's atmosphere at angles of attack near 90° and at initial entry angles up to --3° are studied. The trajectories are calculated for vehicles whose angle of attack can be held constant at some specified value or can be perfectly controlled as a function of some measured quantity along the trajectory. The results might be applied in the design of automatic control systems or in the design of instruments which will give the human pilot sufficient information to control his trajectory properly during an atmospheric entry. Trajectory data are compared on the basis of the deceleration, range, angle of attack, and, in some cases, the rate of descent. The aerodynamic heat-transfer rate and skin temperature of a vehicle with a simple heat-sink type of structure are calculated for trajectories made with several types of control functions.

She knew it was wrong that people thought women could only be teachers or nurses--as wrong as 10-5=3. And she proved everyone wrong by zooming ahead of her classmates, starting college at fifteen, and eventually joining NASA, where her calculations helped pioneer America's first manned flight into space, its first manned orbit of Earth, and the world's first trip to the moon! Award-winning author Suzanne Slade and debut artist Veronica Miller Jamison tell the story of a NASA "computer" in this smartly written, charmingly illustrated biography.
