Book excerpt: Federal Aviation Administration and Air Force surveillance radars are capable of monitoring bird movements efficiently and can be used to minimize the hazard of collisions between birds and aircraft if those responsible for the operation of these systems take a sufficient interest in this application. This statement is supported by successive-time-exposure photographic recordings of bird echoes seen by the North Platte and Denver radars. In addition, visits have been made to numerous FAA air route surveillance centers in the lower forty-eight states and DEW and AC and W radar sites in Alaska. Simultaneous monitoring of radar screens at three FAA centers on one occasion provided information about bird movements in the area from Ohio on the east to Arizona on the West. Air Force radars in Alaska have provided interesting new information on bird migration between Alaska and Siberia and along the coastline of Alaska. Such use of existing radar systems on a partially multipurpose basis justifies further their expense of operation. The research conducted with the support of the AFOSR has led to new programs of research, at the University of Colorado, involving the bird hazard in the immediate vicinity of airports and the identification of birds by radar. This book was released on 1972 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utility of a GEC-AEI No. 654 radar for warning of bird hazards at airfields has been evaluated at Gunbarrel Hill and Valmont Reservoir, near Boulder, Colorado, from 16 March to 19 December 1971. Morning and evening flights of Mallards, Canada Geese, etc., provide good test radar targets at these locations. The 654 radar is useful as it is, but improvements are recommended to allow detection of birds at greater ranges. Some doppler radar signature data were also taken with a cw radar at Baller Lake in spring 1971. Experience with this radar provides a basis for recommending further development of signature capability. Such capability should allow determining quickly if a target is caused by birds or not, the type or size of bird, and whether the echo is from one or a small or large number of birds.

Book excerpt: Extensive work with the ASR-4 radar provided basic data that has been analyzed to produce a method that flight controllers can use to collect data on the quantity, size and altitude of birds migrating aloft. A synthesis of radar data collected to date demonstrated the importance of prevailing wind patterns in the evolution of bird migration patterns throughout the continental United States and the world. Analysis of all the direct visual data and radar data gathered with the WSR-57 radar resulted in an updated method of counting the number of migrating birds aloft in much the same manner as weather radar operators measure the intensity of rain storms. A preliminary draft of a manual on radar ornithology to be used by radar operators in the military, the Federal Aviation Agency, and the National Weather Service to detect, identify, and monitor bird movements which might prove hazardous to aircraft has been completed. This book was released on 1975 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of radar to detect and monitor weather phenomena and to detect and control aircraft are well known, but relative few radar technicians and operators realize the importance of radar for detection of birds. The information in this report, presented in handbook form, was obtained from radar operated by the National Weather Service and the FAA. The techniques and information presented should aid radar operators in recognizing the various types of echoes from birds displayed on weather and air-traffic control radars, in estimating the numbers of birds passing over the radar stations, and in gathering information on the altitude of the birds aloft. Use of this information and techniques should be of great assistance in reducing the number of bird/aircraft collisions and improve flight safety.
