Book excerpt: Abstract This study deals with the flexural behavior of all UHPC and composite UHPC beams prestressed with bonded tendons. Flexural behavior is investigated numerically in terms of the failure mode for each beam type and in terms of the mobilization of material capacity . Stress in pre-stressing strands at the ultimate limit state is predicted using finite element analysis, strain compatibility, as well as closed form equations. It is investigated whether the strain compatibility approach and proposed closed form equations are able to predict with good accuracy the stress in strands at the ultimate limit state. It is determined whether the behavior of a composite bridge constructed with prestressed UHPC beams and a normal strength concrete deck is comparable to that when both the beam and the deck are constructed with UHPC. Various concrete strengths for the deck are investigated to yield a comparable performance with all UHPC construction to result in an economical solution without compromising capacity. For cases that feature all UHPC construction (i.e. the beam and the deck) the mobilization of the material strength at the ultimate limit state is investigated. Failure mode for each case is characterized either as a concrete compression controlled failure, or a concrete tension controlled failure using validated material constitutive models. A proposed design methodology for determining flexural capacity at the ultimate limit state is presented. The proposed methodology is validated using data obtained from over 150 girder sections investigated numerically using validated finite element models, and strain compatibility analysis. The benefits of composite construction featuring a normal weight concrete deck and a UHPC beam are demonstrated by conducting a parametric analysis and monitoring the flexural failure mode and the utilization of material capacity.

Book excerpt: Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new material with significantly different properties from conventional concrete. By taking advantage of this material's vastly increased compressive strengths, durability, tensile strengths, and post-cracking capacity from fiber reinforcement, bridges may be designed with longer spans, slimmer members, and increase design lives. However, due to the lack of standardized design procedures, this concrete has yet to be widely accepted as structural material for bridge superstructure design. A UHPC was developed at NMSU that utilizes material available primarily within the state of New Mexico. By utilizing local materials, the high cost associated with commercially available products can be significantly reduced. However, due to the unique mixture proportions, testing must be conducted in regard to the specific material and mechanical properties of this UHPC before it is implemented into structural design. This research focused on the design, production, flexural testing, and analysis of three large-scale prestressed UHPC beams well as fourteen small-scale normally reinforced UHPC beams. Varied parameters for the prestressed specimens included the removal of all mild steel reinforcement and effect of a cast-in-place high strength concrete deck acting in composite action with one if the UHPC specimens. The testing of the normally reinforced specimens investigated the effect of fiber reinforcement on the structural performance and strength characteristics under flexural loading. In order to familiarize the local concrete industry with this concrete, batching casting, and curing of the specimens was conducted with local precasters in order to develop recommendations and procedures for the large-scale production of UHPC. A three stage trial batching process was conducted with Coreslab® Structures (Albuquerque), Inc. to evaluate their plant and production capabilities for the effective batching of UHPC. Using an equivalent uniform tensile stress block to account for the post craking capacity of UHPC (due to fiber reinforcement), as well as strain compatibility, equilibrium, and constitutive relationships, analytical models for the flexural behavoir of both normally reinforced and prestressed UHPC beams were developed. Predictions correlated well with the measured flexural behavior of the specimens. By comparing experimental results with predicted behaviors, recommendations for incorporating the flexural capacity of UHPC flexural members into the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications (2012) are proposed.

Book excerpt: Currently, degradation of pretensioned prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) bridge structures is a serious problem in the United States of America. Since 2000, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is well studied and has become an accepted method to rehabilitate concrete bridges. Design engineers use the ACI 440.2R-17 to determine strength requirements. Additionally, evaluating the deflection of strengthened PRC members is required during the restoration/strengthening design. ACI 440.2R-17 relies on ACI 318-19 for deflection calculations and limits prestressing from yielding under service load levels. This dissertation examines the application of the effective moment of inertia equation given in ACI 318-19 for the determination of deflection after cracking of PRC beams externally strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). The results reported in this dissertation deal with the behavior of partially prestressed concrete beams strengthened with high strength composites. The three major parts discussed are experimental work, analytical investigations, and a parametric study. Experimental results obtained by other researchers were used to verify the results of the analytical procedures developed. The parametric study provides information on the moment-curvature and load-deflection behavior of strengthened pretensioned prestressed concrete flexural members externally strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymers that can be obtained for various concrete strengths, reinforcement ratios, and varying cross-sections. An analytical model was developed to predict the flexural rigidity of pretensioned, partially prestressed concrete beams that are externally strengthened with high strength composites. CFRP sheets were used for the derivation of equations. The proposed model is based on principles of mechanics and the sectional equations available for the analysis of partially prestressed beams. The model is applicable to the full range of prestressed concrete members covering partially and fully prestressed concrete, straight or harped strands, with or without supplemental mild-reinforcing steel, and varying loading conditions. The procedure can be used to generate the entire load-deflection response and through performing the moment-curvature analysis and estimation of stresses and strains in addition to computing the effective flexural stiffness of the strengthened prestressed member. Comparisons of experimental and analytical results show that deflection can be predicted with good accuracy using the developed modified effective moment of inertia equation. The parametric investigation was conducted on the effect of the basic variables namely, cross-section, concrete compressive strength, prestressing steel ratio, amount of carbon fibers, modulus of elasticity of prestressing steel-to-modulus of elasticity of CFRP ratio, modulus of elasticity of carbon fiber composite, spans, and shear span-to-span ratios. The goal of this investigation was conducted to understand the effect of CFRP strengthening to the flexural stiffness. Rectangular cross-sections with straight bonded prestressing tendons strengthened with 1 to 5 layers of unidirectional carbon sheets were analyzed in the parametric study. Lastly, the application of the proposed effective moment of inertia equation to bonded, pretensioned prestressed members, with harped strands depressed at midspan, externally strengthened with CFRP is examined in comparison with the experimental and analytical response curves.

Book excerpt: Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, facades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

Book excerpt: This book presents new guidelines for the control of cracking in massive reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Understanding this behavior during construction allows engineers to ensure properties such as durability, reliability, and water- and air-tightness throughout a structure’s lifetime. Based on the findings of the French national CEOS.fr project, the authors extend existing engineering standards and codes to advance the measurement and prediction of cracking patterns. Various behaviors of concrete under load are explored within the chapters of the book. These include cracking of ties, beams and in walls, and the simulation and evaluation of cracking, shrinkage and creep. The authors propose new engineering rules for crack width and space assessment of cracking patterns, and provide recommendations for measurement devices and protocols. Intended as a reference for design and civil engineers working on construction projects, as well as to aid further work in the research community, applied examples are provided at the end of each chapter in the form of expanded measurement methods, calculations and commentary on models.

Book excerpt: Lightweight structures and material optimized systems are of major relevance in the building industry and particularly in the design of concrete structures. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to use material in a resource conserving way. The increase of strength characteristics, as one measure to reduce cross section dimensions, postulates the prefabrication of cementitious materials under laboratory conditions. This thesis examines the contradiction of the possibility to realize slender concrete elements and the complexity of the discontinued homogeneity arising from necessary segmentations. Proposals of implementation strategies are demonstrated and verified on the basis of selected case studies.
