Book excerpt: Structural elements such as beams, slabs and columns may require strengthening during their service life period. The need for strengthening may arise due to one or a combination of several factors including construction or design defects, increased load carrying demands, change in use of structure, seismic upgrade, or meeting new code requirements. Studies have shown that Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, in the form of sheets, have emerged as a viable, cost-effective alternative to steel plates or other techniques in strengthening RC members. The principal advantages of FRP sheets over steel plates include high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and flexibility in its use. Another significant advantage of this repair technique is that overall repair cost in terms of labor, material and equipment is low and can offset the high material cost. However, the long-term durability and performance of FRP sheet strengthened RC members is a concern in civil engineering community. This work study involves experimental and theoretical investigations of the behavior of flexural debonding carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with steel anchorages.

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used as externally epoxy-bonded reinforcement for repair and retrofit of existing concrete structures. As the use of CFRP in construction increases, it is essential to consider the long term behavior. In this study, concrete specimens with externally bonded CFRP composite systems were exposed to various accelerated ageing environments: different elevated temperature water immersion, varying relative humidity exposure, real-time solar exposure, pressurized hygrothermal exposure, and fatigue loading. Three-point loading test and direct tension test were used to evaluate the flexural and tensile strength of CFRP specimens. This research recommends that the durability strength reduction factor be defined as the ratio of the flexural strength of a test specimen after exposure for 60 days at 60C to the strength of a control specimen at the initiation of exposure. Test specimens, exposure environments, testing procedures, and field application environments are selected to assure uniform reporting, testing and application of durability strength reduction factors. Two exposure environments are recommended for design, wet and air. Water can diffuse through concrete and accumulate on the epoxy/concrete interface in a wet environment and is the default condition for design. An air environment precludes water accumulation but requires engineering design and validation to guarantee compliance. The resulting durability strength reduction factor may be used to (a) calculate the reduced strength for environmental exposure, (b) qualify a specific CFRP system, (c) compare durability reduction factors to those provided by system suppliers, and (d) confirm compliance with project specifications.

Book excerpt: "The demand for strengthening of aging reinforced concrete (RC) structures are continuously rising. Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are the most widely used externally bonded-reinforcing (EBR) materials for strengthening and retrofitting of RC structural members. The use of high strength galvanized steel mesh (GSM) strengthening material has recently gained some acceptance. However, Both CFRP and GSM have high strength but have low ductility. Recently developed aluminum alloys (AA) have high ductility and some desirable characteristics that may overcome some of the shortcomings of CFRP and GSM. Combining AA with CFRP and GSM will result in a hybrid material with balanced strength and ductility. Therefore, the major aim of this research is to develop a hybrid ductile and strong retrofitting system by combining AA plates with GSM and CFRP laminates to strengthen RC beams in flexure. A comprehensive experimental program was carried out to determine the tensile strength and the bond strength of the hybrid system. Fifteen-coupon specimens were tested for tensile strength, six specimens of concrete prisms for bond strength and 25 T-beam specimens for flexural strength under a four-point loading. Results showed an increase in the flexural capacity of the strengthened specimen ranging from 10% to 77% compared to the control beam and a decline in ductility of 13% to 59% compared to the un-strengthened specimen. Furthermore, analytical models based on ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines were employed to capture the flexural behavior of the tested specimens. Experimental results correlated well with the analytical predictions in a range of 30% of the experimental values. The study concluded that the newly proposed hybrid systems are promising systems for the improvement of the flexural behavior (strength and ductility) of RC beams."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) into the repair and retrofitting of concrete structures has been growing exponentially over the past two decades worldwide. The composite offers a superior strength- to- weight ratio as well as good durability in various service environments. The proper implementation of CFRP system involves a clean concrete surface, a powerful adhesive, such as epoxy resins together with compatible CFRP. However, one of the limiting factors towards the widespread of CFRP systems is attributed to its low resistance to elevated temperature and fire. Hence, efforts have been exerted to better understand and quantify this negative effect and to provide external protection for the system in order to alleviate the negative of impact of elevated temperature. This study focuses on assessing the impact of elevated temperature on the flexural strength of externally bonded CFRP with and without protection. Two sets of plain concrete beams have been prepared without protection and with a ready-to-use cementitious protective. All beams were subjected to temperature degrees of 70, 120 and 180 °C for 1, 2, 4 and 8 hours in a furnace. The flexural strength and mode of failure have been assessed for each set. The results of this work demonstrate the CFRP strengthened beams experienced a drastic loss in strength upon exposure to elevated temperature. The extent of the drop in strength varied according to degree of exposure as well as duration. On the whole, CFRP unprotected beams were able to restore 40% of the flexural strength at 70 °C, while the CFRP strengthened protected beams restored 20% of the flexural strength of the CFRP strengthened beams. At exposure of 120 °C the CFRP strengthened beams showed increase in the flexural strength of 40% over unstrengthened unprotected beams. The CFRP strengthened protected beams surpassed the flexural strength of the CFRP strengthened beams at 120 °C by 20%. At exposure of 180 °C, the CFRP strengthened protected and unprotected beams failed to restore the lost flexural strength for the four and eight hours of exposure. This was followed by the appearance of the normal flexural crack on all the beams. Yet, the separation of the CFRP laminates from the concrete surface were noticed only at exposure to temperatures of 120 and 180 °C. The preliminary cost of the CFRP strengthened unprotected was estimated as 90% higher than the unstrengthened unprotected beams and the CFRP strengthened protected assessed as 16% higher than the CFRP strengthened unprotected. The results unveiled the ability of the CFRP strengthened beams to enhance the flexural strength upon exposure to elevated temperature along with the ability of the fire protection system to further improve this strength. Future work should be resumed to investigate wider sets of composites, various temperatures schemes, long term properties as well as applying the system to steel reinforced beams. It is also recommended to investigate the cooling effect on the performance of the strengthened and protected beams.

Flexural strengthening methods with FRP include external bonding of FRP composites (EB system) and insertion of FRP strips or bars into grooves cut into the concrete (near-surface-mounted or NSM system). Recently, a prestressed FRP strengthening system has been developed and investigated, whereby the FRP reinforcement is pretensioned prior to attachment to the concrete to maximize the use of the high tensile strength of the FRP reinforcement. Existing studies have shown that the ultimate load carrying capacity and serviceability were greatly improved in FRP flexural strengthened beams. However, the only disadvantage of the FRP strengthening system is the reduction of deformability compared to that of unstrengthened structures due to the limited strain capacity of the FRP reinforcement and premature debonding failure. Structures with low deformability may fail suddenly without warning to evacuate, resulting in catastrophic failure. Therefore, a study on the improvement of deformability is critical for the effective use of FRP strengthening systems. In this study, a partially bonded concept is introduced and applied to various FRP strengthening methods, with the specific objective of increasing deformability in FRP strengthened beams. The FRP reinforcement is usually completely bonded to the concrete tensile surface, while a portion of the FRP length is intentionally unbonded in the partially bonded system in order to improve deformability while sustaining high load carrying capacity. To investigate the general behaviour of the partially bonded system, a new analytical model has been developed because conventional section analysis used for analysis of the fully bonded system is not applicable due to strain incompatibility at the FRP reinforcement level within the unbonded length. The analysis shows that a partially bonded system has a high potential to improve deformability without the loss of strength capacity.

Book excerpt: It is well-known that the topic of composite mate- rials affects many engineering fields, such as civil, mechanical, aerospace, automotive and chemical. In the last decades, in fact, a huge number of scientific papers concerning these peculiar constituents has been published. Analogously, the industrial progress has been extremely noticeable. The study of composite materials, in general, is a challenging activity since the advancements both in the academia and in the industry provide continually new sparks to develop innovative ideas and applications. The communication, the sharing and the exchange of views can surely help the works of many researchers. This aspect represents the main purpose of this Conference, which aims to collect high-level contributions on the development and the application of composite materials. The establishment of this 21st edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Bologna (Italy), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.
