The finest American destroyers of World War II had surprisingly long careers into the Cold War and the missile age. The 175-strong Fletcher-class was the largest class of US Navy destroyers ever built, and most received some modernization after World War II. A handful were converted into ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) escorts and one was even converted into the US Navy's first guided missile destroyer. Many Sumner-class destroyers were also kept in service, with the last decommissioned in 1973. The Gearing class was the classic US Navy wartime destroyer to have a second Cold War career, some being modified into picket ships and others into ASW escorts. Ninety-five were extensively modernized under the Fleet Modernization and Rehabilitation (FRAM) program which allowed them to serve until 1980. The majority of these ships then saw service with foreign navies. However the story of Cold War gun destroyers is not just one of World War II relics. Commissioned in the 1950s, the 18 ships of the Forrest Sherman class were the US Navy's last all-gun destroyers, and were considered to be the pinnacle of US Navy gun-destroyer design. Later in their careers, most were modernized for ASW and antiair warfare. The virtually unknown Norfolk class was originally built as a destroyer leader and maximized for ASW but only two were modernized and the other three retired early. Many of these ships, such as USS Edson, Cassin Young, and Turner Joy, still survive as museum ships today. Using battlescene artwork, detailed illustrations and photos, this book explores the careers, modernizations, and roles of all these unsung Cold War stalwarts, the last gun destroyers of the US Navy.

With 175 of the class commissioned, the Fletchers were the most numerous of the US Tin Cans, as destroyers are affectionately known. Today, only one of the type has been preserved in WWII-configuration, the USS Kidd. Named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who gave his life on the bridge of his flagship USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, the destroyer USS Kidd (DD-661) conducted two years of successful operations in the Atlantic and Pacific during WWII before being struck by a kamikaze on 11 April 1945. In that incident, Kidd lost 38 of her crewmen killed and another 55 wounded. After repairs, the destroyer rejoined the fleet, only to be decommissioned after the war. Recommissioned and brought back to active service during the Korean War, Kidd remained an active Naval vessel until she was decommissioned for the final time in 1964.

I have written about some of those wonderful and exciting forays into today's, and yesterday's world. Included will be escapades that encompass many years of taking part in trying to calm fits of temper by a lot of the world's rulers. There will be recounts of travels to far away places, some of which were involved in fighting my way to get there; some of them will be exciting exploration and discovery; and some of it just plain enjoying what is out there. There was no need to be jealous of " Walter Mitty." Many interesting, knowledgeable, exciting, ambitious, destructive, constructive, abusive, loving, religious, and some dirty bastards, have crossed my path; and I have learned a little something from all of them, not all of it nice. I shall never be able to explain why the reverie process brings to mind the most unpleasant happenings in our lives as though seen through rose-colored glasses. The rancor has been deleted. The caustic language has been watered-down; and quite often, returns as a comedy skit.
