And whose mother is an intensely charasmatic U.S. Army Nurse, Lt. Evelyn Sternheim stationed overseas in Europe. Evelyn has a doe eyed five year old brother named Benji who idolizes the heroic Fighting Brooklyns, triplet naval fighter pilots from Brooklyn who are fighting in the war in Europe along with his mother the nurse. And Benji follows and clings to his big sister Evelyn to understand a mother who he doesn't remember much of except that she always wore a United States Army Nurse Corps uniform. While Evelyn's mother is bandaging wounded American soldiers with her patriotism, her young daughter is following in her mother's footsteps by teaching her brother about the wondrous "Spirit of Brooklyn" that lives in us all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story about the struggles and achievements of the first Black person to hold public office in Brooklyn, New York. Bertram L. Baker immigrated to the United States from the Caribbean island of Nevis in 1915. Three decades later, he was elected to the New York state legislature, representing the Bedford Stuyvesant section. A pioneer and a giant, Baker has a story that is finally revealed in intimate and honest detail by his grandson Ron Howell. Boss of Black Brooklyn begins with the tale of Baker’s rise to prominence in a fascinating era of Black American history, a time when thousands of West Indian families began leaving their native islands in the Caribbean and settling in New York City. In 1948, Bert Baker was elected to the New York state assembly, representing the growing central Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant. Baker loved telling his fellow legislators that only one other Nevisian had ever served in the state assembly. That was Alexander Hamilton, the founding father. Making his own mark on modern history, Baker pushed through one of the nation’s first bills outlawing discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. Also, for thirty years, from 1936 to 1966, he led the all-Black American Tennis Association, as its executive secretary. In that capacity he successfully negotiated with white tennis administrators, getting them to accept Althea Gibson into their competitions. Gibson then made history as the first black champion of professional tennis. Baker represents a remarkable turning point in the evolution of modern New York City. In the 1940s, when he won his seat in the New York state assembly, Blacks made up only four percent of the population of Brooklyn. Today they make up a third of the population, and there are scores of Black elected officials. Yet Brooklyn, often called the capital of the Black Diaspora, is a capital under siege. Developers and realtors seeking to gentrify the borough are all but conspiring to push Blacks out of the city. Boss of Black Brooklyn not only explores Black politics and Black organizations but also penetrates Baker’s inner life and reveals themes that resonate today: Black fatherhood, relations between Black men and black women, faithfulness to place and ancestry. Bertram L. Baker’s story has receded into the shadows of time, but Boss of Black Brooklyn recaptures it and inspires us to learn from it. Praise for Boss of Black Brooklyn “[A] valuable addition to New York history . . . . This shines a necessary light on an all-but-forgotten black politician from the pre–civil rights era.” —Publishers Weekly “A potent reminder that history isn’t very old . . . What makes this biography all the more powerful is that as Baker’s grandson, the author Ron Howell . . . offers a personal prism on a transplanted West Indian family and political ascension.” —The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fascinating . . . laugh-aloud funny." - The Los Angeles Times In December of 1968, Phyllis Raphael landed in London as the restless wife of a Hollywood movie producer. With their three young children in tow from L.A., she was prepared for a London vacation on MGM's dime while her husband was on the set. Instead - in a maneuver Raphael wasn't expecting - he left her for an eighteen-year-old actress. And in a decision she never could have predicted, Raphael stayed in London with her kids. Off the King's Road is Raphael's courageous and funny story of being an expatriate let loose in the turbulence of Swinging London in the 1960s. She arrived naive, dependent and dissatisfied, and left several years later as another person entirely: a single mother, a writer, a woman in command - for better or worse - of her own life. Written with seductive elegance, humor and sexual candor, Off the King's Road speaks to all women of the possibilities of a life transformed by circumstance. "A compelling work that captures an era . . . Raphael's account of the English teetering between ingrained restraint and letting-it-all-hang-out is acute - hilarious and sad. Raphael is a talented writer, and she captures her heightened awareness of post marital-split life with refreshing vigor." - VeryShortList.com "At once a powerful coming-of-age memoir and a vivid study of London in the Swinging '60s." - Columbia Daily Spectator "What a journey! Raphael cavorts with everyone from tripping poets to Marlon Brando." - Marie Claire "Spirited . . . Eloquent." - East Hampton Star "Stylish" - Publishers Weekly "Savvy . . . Vibrant . . . An elegant memoir of a swinging time" - Kirkus Reviews "Immensely appealing" - Booklist "A delicious book - warm and witty - one that evokes the Swinging Sixties from a point of view rarely heard from." - Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments "[It has] acutely observed detail, a tactile immediacy, a cool, appraising eye, and humor. Plus, Swinging London! Phyllis Raphael has bid her memory speak, and we can only listen. It is a pleasure to do so." - David Rakoff, author of Don't Get Too Comfortable and Fraud "Her decision to stay in London with her children is the first she's made for herself in a long time and a turning point in this fascinating book. Her weeding through London's poseurs and hypochondriacs to find a good man is laugh-aloud funny. She emerges a full-fledged single woman." - The Los Angeles Times "Every sentence is constructed with enviable grace and economy . . . Rare and evocative." - Haven Kimmel, author of A Girl Named Zippy "Tender, hilarious and utterly charming." - Hilma Wolitzer, author of An Available Man "A sheer delight." - Lynne Sharon Schwartz, author of Two-Part Inventions "Hugely enjoyable, a chronicle of a feverish time as well as a riveting personal journey." - Molly Haskell, author of Love and Other Infectious Diseases "On the money and deliciously deadpan. It is also very, very smart." - Patricia Volk, author of Shocked: My Mother, Schiaparelli, and Me "As vivid and engrossing as any novel." - Frances Kiernan, author of Seeing Mary Plain: A Life of Mary McCarthy "Wonderful . . . witty, wry and irrepressible." - Elizabeth Kendall, author of American Daughter: Discovering My Mother

Book excerpt: An anthology of poetry, song lyrics, and prose featuring writers from Vallejo, California: Diana Alden, Olivia Anderson, Kyrah Ayers, Daniel Badiali, Vallejo Poet Laureate Emerita Genea Brice, Jessica Brown, Lei Kim Sawyer Chavez, G.O. 284, Morgan Hannigan, Travis Jackson, Jr., Kathleen, Jeffrey Kingman, Chuck Lamplighter, Vallejo Poet Laureate D.L. Lewis, Carol Pearlman, Nina Serrano, Ravi Shankar, Erika Snyder, Jeremy Snyder, Regina Sparrow, Diana Tenes, Keith Thompson, Amber Von Nagel, Jeff Williams, Lisa Wilson, and Lois Wu. The idea behind this book is to shine a light on as many artists and wordsmiths as possible. It is to allow them to freely express themselves. They were not bound to form, subject matter, or even agreement with one another, so as to truly reflect the diversity of this community. This book contains both stark realism and wondrous beauty. There are poems on love, loss, pain, struggle, justice, peace, revolution, art, and many poems that celebrate our city, its people, and its places. There is a subject index at the end of this book if you’d like to skip around. You’re sure to find something that suits your fancy. Fair warning to parents who wish to shield their children, this is not a book for little kids. No one was censored. Each contributor was encouraged to be themselves, to use whatever words they saw fit, and while it is a book that came together on a common theme of Vallejo, it also contains many other subjects that each poet was passionate about. Their words will make you think about the world and its many varying perspectives, experiences, and people. All contributors were embraced and accepted, even those with the tiniest of connections to the Vallejo community or merely only connected to myself in some cases. Anyone who submitted was welcome. Their writings remain their intellectual property, so reprint requests should go to the original authors of these pieces. This book is merely an opportunity of artistic unity that reaches across all boundaries. The most important part of writing, in this editor’s humble opinion, is the heart of the writer, and this book contains loads of it. These are the pure, uncensored expressions of the hearts of each writer, just as contradictory as life itself, so full of personal and universal truth. Collectively, this book is better than anything each of us could write on our own, and I am honored to have been its editor. Even if I had not been its editor, this is a book I would enjoy reading. The views expressed in this chapbook are those of the individual poets, not necessarily always shared by the city of Vallejo, its poet laureate, the Vallejo Peace Project, or perhaps, even yourself. You may vehemently disagree with some of their words. Please keep an open mind and heart anyways. Their poetry, personalities, backgrounds, and ideas are as gorgeously diverse as our city, and this book aims to welcome everyone within its pages, to give each artist total creative freedom for whatever vision they may wish to express, and to expose each reader to the beauty of their words.
