Book excerpt: An uplifting children’s story about overcoming obstacles and working as a team. The animals all have their own personal struggle to overcome.Encourages children to reserve judgement as the animals have parallels to human behaviour. In a land similar to New England, humans cut down the biggest beech tree and threaten the flying squirrels’ nut supply. Duggan worries they’ll starve. To find more, he crosses the busy highway and he almost gets flattened by a motorbike. He meets new friends in the forest who help him out, when they’re not fighting over a carrot or potato from their vegetable patch. All Duggan wants to do is to get home. He builds devices to cross the highway but it’s harder than he thought. The animals raid the commercial bakery, which churns out an endless feast of cakes and the flour, fat, sugar combo changes everything. Gopher twins Luca and Milo power up the metal pathway and Milo falls in the dough hopper. Can Duggan get them out of there? Fatter from stuffing doughnuts, the animals don’t move as fast as they used to!

Book excerpt: Flat Squirrel is a selection of fun and absurd stories all written as poems. The poems began as a tribute to departing colleagues, Farewell Steve Jobs was the first published poem. They are divided into three sets: Trilby is about Home, Panama is about Play and Fez is about Work with a nod to the late great Tommy Cooper. The poems range from tributes to friends, Nelson Mandela and Flight 370 to pondering BMWs, Luis Suarez, Norwegian Woods, Paris and Christmas. Some are protests, some are observations and a few are just plain silly. Most will make you smile one or to will bring a tear to the eye. The poems are not all polite so please don t give the book to small children, but do read it to them selectively. PS Keep an eye out for Maude and Mabel, they will be back.

Today, software organizations are transforming the way work gets done through practices like Agile, Lean, and DevOps. But as commonly implemented as these methods are, many transformations still fail, largely because the organization misses a critical step: transforming their culture and the way people communicate. Agile Conversations brings a practical, step-by-step guide to using the human power of conversation to build effective, high-performing teams to achieve truly Agile results. Consultants Douglas Squirrel and Jeffrey Fredrick show readers how to utilize the Five Conversations to help teams build trust, alleviate fear, answer the “whys,” define commitments, and hold everyone accountable. These five conversations give teams everything they need to reach peak performance, and they are exactly what’s missing from too many teams today. Stop focusing on processes and practices that leave your organization stuck with culture-less rituals. Instead, unleash the unique human power of conversation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the practice of scales is essential to building and maintaining strength, technique, tone, and agility—it is very easy to slip into the habit of playing them automatically, without paying attention to how they sound or even being aware of what scale we are playing. The 29 single-page studies in this book are designed to combat that tendency as they are musically, intellectually, and rhythmically challenging. The first 24 studies proceeded through the circle of fifths and address all minor and relative major keys; the last 5 pieces were individually conceived, i.e., apart from the circle of fifths. Occasional fingerings or position guides are suggested but these are largely left to the student or their teachers. No metronome indications are given so that the etudes can be played at individually comfortable tempos—with or without a metronome, or freely as concert etudes. It is the stepwise motion and octave leaps of the etudes that makes the intervals between pitches easy to hear, even in keys with numerous flats or sharps. Just as in Elaine Fine’s more basic scale etude book, Violin Scale Tales, the names of the etudes herein refer to various animals that have scales, including insects, fish, birds, reptiles, a few species of squirrels with scales on their tails, and the solitary pangolin, the only known mammal whose entire body is covered with scales. Again, the author hopes that in addition to experiencing more enjoyable scale practice, students will be inspired to learn more about these amazing creatures, or even write scale studies of their own.
