Book excerpt: flam·boy·ant – (of a person–or bird!–or their behavior) tending to attract attention because of their confidence, exuberance, and stylishness This fun and funny bird's-eye tome to individuality, community, and harmony follows the reactions of a neighborhood full of birds when a “flamboyance” of flamingos moves in. Each band of birds—a gaggle of geese, a dole of doves, a charm of finches, a brood of chickens, a scream of swifts, and an unkindness of ravens—all have their feathers ruffled and express their apprehension about the new and different arrivals. Bright pink colors, long legs, how dare they! Even a watch of nightingales patrols after dark. When the band of jays decides it is time to settle down the neighborhood, the pride of peacocks takes the lead, with support from a waddle of penguins, a venue of vultures, a mob of emus, and a gulp of cormorants. Finally, they all land at the flamingos’ welcome party only to realize that they had all been birdbrained. Their new neighbors are actually quite charming, and not so scary and different after all. Includes a note from the author on helping children to learn about acceptance, avoid stereotyping, and model welcoming behavior.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to further our understanding of the socio-genesis of artistic modernity by turning to micro-history. It explores a late-medieval decorative procedure that emerged and spread in northern and central France from the early fifteenth century to the start of the following century. Using the well-known miniature, the Building of Solomon's temple in Jerusalem from the fifteenth-century codex of Les Antiquites judaiques as a starting point, this study deals with architecture and technical knowledge of builders. This investigation unpacks and reveals many aspects of the technical and visual culture of late medieval craftsmen and artists. The virtuosic skills these artisans displayed are worthy of inclusion in the development of technical practices of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. They also reflect broader cultural and social configurations, which go far beyond the history of building. This micro-historical perspective on what can be called hyper-technical Gothic contributes to our appreciation of the role of technical mastery in establishing social hierarchies and artistic individuation processes during the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern period.

Book excerpt: Bronze Medalist, 2007 Independent Publishers Book Award in the Gay/Lesbian Category The Family Flamboyant is a graceful and lucid account of the many routes to family formation. Weaving together personal experience and political analysis in an examination of how race, gender, sexuality, class, and other hierarchies function in family politics, Marla Brettschneider draws on her own experience in a Jewish, multiracial, adoptive, queer family in order to theorize about the layered realities that characterize families in the United States today. Brettschneider uses critical race politics, feminist insight, class-based analysis, and queer theory to offer a distinct and distinctly Jewish contribution to both the family debates and the larger project of justice politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, this book tells the flamboyant story of Abe Ruef and San Francisco’s infamous era of graft. In the year 1906, San Francisco was rocked by two calamitous earthquakes. Nature herself was responsible for one; a man named Ruef was responsible for the other. Abraham Ruef (1864-1936), known as Abe Ruef, was a rogue of innumerable refinements. A classical scholar, a wit, a bon vivant, he was also a political boss who not only picked the city’s officials—among them, “Handsome Gene” Schmitz, San Francisco’s “bassoon mayor”—but picked the city’s pockets as well. When he was finally arraigned for graft, Ruef attempted to appoint himself District Attorney to prosecute the case! In A Debonair Scoundrel, Lately Thomas reconstructs the little known but fantastic career and its gaudy, dramatic setting: a city thrown into wild disorder; fighting in the courts reeking with corruption; kidnappings, and flying bullets with overtones of slapstick comedy and suspense. The men who saw to Ruef’s undoing were relics of a bygone West: millionaire Rudolph Spreckels, who tried to reform his own class; Fremont Older, the Evening Bulletin crusading editor—and others, such as Teddy Roosevelt and William Randolph Hearst. Their encounter with Abe Ruef is wittily described by Lately Thomas, author of The Vanishing Evangelist, who has brought his magnificently creative gifts to a book as brilliant and rambunctious as the fabulous era he describes.

Book excerpt: Ronaldinho’s is the classic rags-to-riches tale of the outrageously talented boy from the Brazilian back streets who, despite his humble origins, conquers the footballing world. As Jethro Soutar shows, Ronaldinho's early years were hard, and he had to cope with a family tragedy at a tender age before making his name as the star of local team Gremio, whose youth club he joined when he was just six. Understandably, his decision in 2001 to transfer to Paris St. Germain proved controversial and unpopular locally, with those same Gremio fans who had hero-worshipped him now turning against him. As it transpired, Ronaldinho's time in France yielded little success on the pitch and provoked the first accusations of a rather too rampant nightlife off it, accusations that continue to haunt him. Last year he recognised the legitimacy of a son born to a former showgirl in Rio. Yet, Ronaldinho has always thrived in the yellow shirt of the national team, playing a key role in Brazil´s 2002 World Cup victory. When he switched to Barcelona in 2003 the club was in crisis; but his dazzling and inspiring play quickly transformed their fortunes, and last season he guided the Catalans to the league title with the Champions League the next target. Ronaldinho’s style of play is spectacular, combining dazzling dribbles with audacious strikes at goal, but as this inspiring and meticulously researched book shows, he always plays with a smile and handles himself with a modesty alien to the arrogance of the modern footballer. It is not surprising that this unique combination of skill, charm and generosity has conquered the hearts of football fans the world over – who will welcome the publication of this definitive biography which will include the full story of Ronaldinho's world cup appearances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not many businessmen are as well-known their personal lives as by the business empires they run. In fact, few of us would probably know much about the owners of most businesses. However, when you hear the name Virgin Group, the name of Richard Branson comes to mind immediately. Branson, who was knighted at Buckingham Palace in March of 2000, becoming Sir Richard Branson, has an estimated net worth of US $5.2 billion. Keep in mind that he runs a multitude of businesses and that his net worth is increasing day by day. This means that by the end of his life his net worth will probably be much higher than it is currently. Branson is known for his adventurous spirit, not only as an entrepreneur, but also in sports and other areas of his life. In fact, he has broken and holds a few world records. Also, let’s not forget that he is a world-famous face. He has businesses all over the world or at least in the major countries of the world. Additionally, he has made several appearances in many TV shows and movies. Needless to say, he isn’t just a recognizable name, but for most of us, he is also a familiar face. How did Richard Branson become what he is now? What businesses does he run? Why is so much known about his personal life? What is his contribution to the world, in addition to just the entrepreneur world? Find the answers to these questions and many more in this book.
