Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen Available Nitrogen in Commercial Products. The question of the available nitrogen in the various compounds has in a mea sure determined the price of the product, the utilization in the fertilizer art being practically the basis of fixing the price. For a number of years it has been assumed that the selling price of combined nitrogen would be from 12 cents to 13 cents a pound. Thus Chile saltpeter being about 95 per cent pure nitrate of soda would have a theoretical nitrogen content of about per cent or corrected for impurities would have about per cent nitrogen. As the cyanides until recently were not used directly in the fertilizer art and were combined with more expensive products, their price has not been regulated by. Their content of combined nitrogen. The ammonia used in the fertilizer art is almost entirely used as sulphate of ammonia, on account of the cheap ness of the commercial sulphuric acid and the ease of manu facture, and this product would therefore have a theoretical con tent of 21 per cent of nitrogen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, this gives the very early history of how human ingenuity overcame the risk of famine through productive agriculture. Starting with a layman's guide to the chemistry of nitrogen fixation, the book goes on to show how humans emerged from nomadic lifestyles and began developing towns and settlements. When they for the first time began planting the same fields year after year, they noticed quickly the need to ensure soil fertility. But how? The method they came up with is still in use to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it true that the German army, invading Belgium and France in August 1914, perpetrated brutal atrocities? Or are accounts of the deaths of thousands of unarmed civilians mere fabrications constructed by fanatically anti-German Allied propagandists? Based on research in the archives of Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy, this pathbreaking book uncovers the truth of the events of autumn 1914 and explains how the politics of propaganda and memory have shaped radically different versions of that truth. John Horne and Alan Kramer mine military reports, official and private records, witness evidence, and war diaries to document the crimes that scholars have long denied: a campaign of brutality that led to the deaths of some 6500 Belgian and French civilians. Contemporary German accounts insisted that the civilians were guerrillas, executed for illegal resistance. In reality this claim originated in a vast collective delusion on the part of German soldiers. The authors establish how this myth originated and operated, and how opposed Allied and German views of events were used in the propaganda war. They trace the memory and forgetting of the atrocities on both sides up to and beyond World War II. Meticulously researched and convincingly argued, this book reopens a painful chapter in European history while contributing to broader debates about myth, propaganda, memory, war crimes, and the nature of the First World War.

Book excerpt: Cyanobacteria constitute the most widely distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes found in almost all realms of the earth and play an important role in Earth's nitrogen and carbon cycle. The gradual transformation from reducing atmosphere to oxidizing atmosphere was a turning point in the evolutionary history of the earth and made conditions for present life forms possible. Cyanobacteria: From Basic Science to Applications is the first reference volume that comprehensively discusses all aspects of cyanobacteria, including the diverse mechanisms of cyanobacteria for the advancement of cyanobacterial abilities, towards higher biofuel productivity, enhanced tolerance to environmental stress and bioactive compounds and potential for biofertilizers. - Describes cyanobacterial diversity, stress biology, and biotechnological aspects of cyanobacteria - Explores the global importance of cyanobacteria - Provides a broad compilation of research that deals with cyanobacterial stress responses in both controlled laboratory conditions as well as in their natural environment
