Book excerpt: During the time that I have held the Taylorian Teachership of Spanish at Oxford, I have frequently received letters asking what there is to read in Spanish besides Cervantes and Calderon and what editions should be used. The present volume is intended to answer these questions, and to show the position occupied by the great writers in the general scheme of the literature of their country. The various divisions of the great subject have been exhaustively treated up to their several dates by Nicolas Antonio, Ticknor, Amador de los Rios, Schack and Wolf, to whose books I beg to acknowledge my many obligations, hoping at the same time that the present general sketch may be useful to the general reader, and to the beginner, and may serve as an introduction to more extensive works. I am aware that a few short extracts, however well chosen can give no adequate idea of the manner of a great writer or of the merits of a great book, and that translations, even by the most skilful hands, are wont to reproduce the defects rather than the beauties of their original. The extracts here printed are intended to relieve the monotony of a long list of short notices of authors, and to illustrate the development of the language and progress of literary method; they are, as far as possible, characteristically Spanish in subject and, it is hoped, of sufficient interest to induce readers to refer to the books from which they are taken

Book excerpt: Naked and Alone is a comparative analysis of early modern captivity narratives that chronicle the harrowing experiences of a few Iberians and one Hessian in the New World during the century of exploration and colonization. Included among them are the tales of Jerónimo de Aguilar and Gonzalo Guerrero, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca , Juan Ortiz, Hans Stade, and Francisco Núñez de Pineda y Bascuñán. After years of captivity that stripped the unfortunate men of their cultural identity, they eventually reunited with their countrymen to relate and record tales that rivaled the heroic epics. The authors thus provided most Europeans with a first glimpse into exotic New World societies considered strange and perhaps even diabolical by the colonizers. At the same time, most contemporaries used the narratives as justification for imperial prerogatives although the captives themselves came away with a deeper understanding of and appreciation for their Indian captors. Although considered by some early historians as reliable texts, the captivity narratives are rejected by this author as historically accurate depictions of the experiences—faulty memories, contemporary myth, and the authors’ subjectivity greatly impeded the veracity. He instead argues that the texts are cultural artifacts that offer useful insight to the mentalities of the age. In order to construct a histoire des mentalities, the author incorporates anthropological perspectives of myth and employs textual/contextual analysis to unlock the deeper meanings often obscured by the literary imagery. What results is an interpretation that aids understanding of sixteenth-century peoples and societies, and of the post-colonial American cultures most directly influenced by them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all my years of travel I have seldom met anyone as sagacious as Henry Zeiter, and even more seldom have I met anyone more widely read. He knows a great deal about a great many things and something about almost everything else! This new volume of his musings will enrich anyone blessed enough to read it. Joseph Pearce, Author, Biographer of C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, Solzhenitsyn, Chesterton, others Writer in Residence, Ave Maria University Many thanks to Dr. Henry Zeiter for collecting and sharing insights gathered over many years. I am amazed at the variety ranging from intensely personal reflections on to struggles of daily life to impressive literary, philosophical, and medical analyses. I especially recommend his essay on James Joyce; it is written with real feeling for a tortured soul Brian T. Kelly, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Mathematics and Science, Dean of Thomas Aquinas College, Santa, Paula, California Dr. Zeiter has lived intensely, and experienced the whole ride on the emotional rollercoaster. He has observed much, learned some, and reflected a lot on life. We can learn from him.and there is a great connection between learning and fully living. There is a memorable line in the movie The Shawshank Redemption: Get busy livingor get busy dying Henry Zeiter will certainly help you get busy living. Read his material slowly. Taste it, digest it in small bites, and reflect on it. That way you can enjoy the meal and absorb it in your own way. Dr. J. Mitchell Perry, JM Perry Learning Center, Ventura, California

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Spanish drama extends from the close of the 15th century to the death of Calderón in 1681. During that time, the humanists, as dramatists, followed Italy's artistic awakening direction, and imitated Classical drama. With originality and dreams of greatness, they subverted the nature of tragedy; modified the approach of Comedy and invented the New Play, the Comedia Nueva. In it the poet-dramatists introduced important modificaitons of realism, included imagined reality, Christian symbolism and theatricality, as artistic truth. They elaborate all kinds of syntheses. For this reason, the Spanish Golden Age theater can be viewed as part of a tradition that includes the Greco-Roman comedy and tragedy, Christian tragedy, and the authentic national literary and dramatic tendencies. The entries in this reference book explore the fascinating history of the Golden Age of Spanish drama. The volume begins with an introductory overview of the literary, cultural, and historical contexts that shaped dramatic writing of the period. The book then presents alphabetically arranged essays for nineteen significant Spanish dramatists of the Golden Age. Each essay is written by an expert contributor and includes biographical information, an analysis and evaluation of major works, a discussion of critical response to the plays, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The volume closes with a selected general bibliography of central critical studies of Golden Age Spanish drama.
