Book Synopsis Five Letters 1519-1526 by : Hernando Cortés
Download or read book Five Letters 1519-1526 written by Hernando Cortés and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1928. 'These letters, well edited tell of a great conqueror, fighting for God and his king, and reveal the might proportions of the truly Elizabethan character that was Hernando Cortés.' Times Literary Supplement. Cortés's letters to the Emperor from Mexico are half-letters, half-despatches. The letters were all written between 1519 and 1526. Letter One: Despite the original never having been recovered, there is little doubt about the contents of this letter. The earliest discoveries of the mainland from 1517 onwards are outlined. Letter Two: Arguably the most dramatic of the five, this letter opens with the advance into the heart of the hostile country and the capture of the monarch. Letter Three: This letter covers the advance of Cortés into Culua, the assault on the capital itself and the various enterprises undertaken by the Conqueror to extend his power throughout Mexico. Letter Four: This letter is mainly concerned with organizational affairs, with the visit of Garay, causing rebellion in Pánuco, and concluding with the Frenchman's death, being the most important incident. Letter Five: Beginning with the start of the expedition to Honduras, and chronicling the trials and tribulations of the daring journey, this letter ends with an account of Cortés' triumphant return to the post of Governor after several years' absence.

Book excerpt: The Hungarian Poet Lajos Walder (1913 - 1945), who chose the pseudonym Vandor, or wanderer, first came to notice in 1932 when he introduced himself to the editor of ANONYMOUS, a Budapest-published literary magazine, with the following words: 'My name is Lajos Vandor. I am a poet, a law student and a trainee worker at the knitting mills. To the proletarians I am a rotten bourgeois; to the bourgeois I am a stinking proletarian; to the petit-bourgeoisie I am an evil anarchist and to the anarchists I am a cowardly petit-bourgeoisie. And everybody is right, whatever they say about me. But I wrote a few masterpieces - these, the poets and les belles ames would call prose, and the prose writers and modern aesthetes would call poems. Take them and eat them, read them, and publish them; but first give me a cigarette because I left my cash register at home and I don't have four cents in my pocket to buy a single fag.' Walder's poems are an accurate expression of their times; political tension and bizarre humour are juxtaposed in a manner concordant with the irreverent Da-da movement that after 1916 swept through the art and literary circles of pre-war Europe. The poems, translated by his daughter Agnes Walder, now resident in Sydney, are for the first time published in English.

In Forty-Five Letters from a World War II Sailor, Robert W. Bradshaw presents a collection of letters his father, Frank, wrote to his parents during a two-year period. It was a dangerous time in history when mariners died at a rate of one in twenty-four, the highest rate of casualties of any service. From a cold-blooded slaughter in the Ukraine, to illicit sex on the high seas, to coping with food shortages and a loony captain, Frank shares the day-to-day happenings of the life of a sailor on a cargo ship. Forty-Five Letters from a World War II Sailor delivers firsthand World War II global insights and a unique historical perspective from the view of an eighteen-year-old man. It provides fodder for future generations to fulfill their American dreams.
