Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing for Love or Money: Thirty-Five Essays Reprinted From the Saturday Review of Literature This book is concerned with writing as a craft, but it is not a how-to book. It neither offers keys to the literary kingdom, nor professes special knowledge of short cuts for converting writing aptitude into publishing contracts. What it does do is to deal with writing as a profession or as a serious avocation, mostly by way of discussing the problems that face the writer. They are placed very much as they were written, and they were written as the subjects sug gested themselves, or were suggested to me. The subjects themselves would seem to have but little in common. Yet in their treatment they have a com mon point of view from which they gain a certain aspect of unity; and in their aim and drift they consciously tend to a common issue, which, I think, gives to them, if not a harmony, at least an undis cordant cadence of thought. Many of us in these days are deeply interested alike in philosophy, in science, and in theology; but it may be our interest centres not so much in the scholastic and separate walks of each, technically considered, as in that less trodden line of mystic thought which, whilst it claims to include all, is in itself expressed by none. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion and Language, Considered in Five Essays The name given to this book on the title-page was suggested by a friend, and it was adopted by the publisher in its first announcement, under the impression that I had proposed or approved it. I felt, however, and still feel, that such a title may seem to promise too much; but after full consideration I have retained it, on the ground that it expresses, clearly and concisely, the. principles which have guided me throughout the work. In the three Essays on the oldest forms of religion of which we have contemporary or trustworthy records, my object has been to prove that they were derived from a common source, and that all that is true, ennobling, and spiritual in them is due to that origin. In the Essay on the Rig Veda, I have first called attention to the certain fact that, at the period when the hymns were produced, two systems co-existed; the one resting upon a moral and spiritual basis; the other wholly naturalistic, personifying and adoring physical forces and agencies. In the second place, I have insisted upon the no less certain, though too often unnoticed fact that, of these two systems, the former was by far the more ancient, and that it represents the fundamental principles which were recognised by the ancestors of the Aryan race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Social Essays: Reprinted From the New York Nation Complete, an enormous, an almost incalculable, heap of short stories and tales and sketches for magazines. If, now, it should seem not possible that a people demon strably so infatuated with novel-reading, a people for whom this vast quantity of novel-writing is done, should ever learn to do without it and dislike it, we must re member that the vast quantity itself which they have already devoured is the best of reasons why their stom achs should at last begin to loathe this light food. For how old a story the modern novel has latterly got to.be! Of course, there are plenty of reasons why this should be so. Mankind, according to that Jaco bin whom Emerson once met, mankind is a d d fool; and this we are obliged to confess a very just remark. At any rate, it is never very probable, we may say, that the thought which the mass of novelists will be able to offer their readers will be anything par ticularly new or good; and as to imagination, of what value to anybody would be the imaginations of a fool of the kind above specified? So the great majority of our fellow creatures, it should seem, are disqualified for the production of novels, we do not say enduring, but endurable. And, in point of fact, the creators of characters in each generation of writers may usually be counted on the fingers. Even of creators of character, by no means every one after he has conceived and formed his characters is able so to manage their inter relations, so contrive their action on each other, and join consequence to adequate cause, as to make his creations seem like rational animals. At any given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They are of the same general character as those contained in S lashings, though the part of invective is somewhat less, and the tone of the book as a whole is quieter. In selecting the essays to be included in this translation I have chosen, naturally, those which seemed to hold greatest interest for American readers. Most of the persons discussed are fig ures of world-wide significance; in the few other cases there has seemed to be something of special value in the content of the essay itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design brings together the best of designer Michael Bierut's critical writing—serious or humorous, flattering or biting, but always on the mark. Bierut is widely considered the finest observer on design writing today. Covering topics as diverse as Twyla Tharp and ITC Garamond, Bierut's intelligent and accessible texts pull design culture into crisp focus. He touches on classics, like Massimo Vignelli and the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as newcomers, like McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and color-coded terrorism alert levels. Along the way Nabakov's Pale Fire; Eero Saarinen; the paper clip; Celebration, Florida; the planet Saturn; the ClearRx pill bottle; and paper architecture all fall under his pen. His experience as a design practitioner informs his writing and gives it truth. In Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design, designers and nondesigners alike can share and revel in his insights.
