Book Synopsis Molecular Physical Chemistry by : Keith A McLauchlan
Download or read book Molecular Physical Chemistry written by Keith A McLauchlan and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Physical Chemistry: A Concise Introduction focuses on two main aspects of physical chemistry: thermodynamics and reaction dynamics. By looking at the properties of the atoms and molecules that constitute matter, it makes use of results from modern experiments conducted on small numbers of molecules. These molecular properties allow the behaviour of larger groups of molecules to be predicted. This is in contrast to conventional approaches which are based upon how the subjects have developed historically. It attempts to show how some basic concepts can be easily applied to give verifiable results in simple systems before extending them to more complicated scenarios. The text is intended as an aid to understanding these central topics of physical chemistry, rather than an introduction to them, and some familiarity with them is assumed throughout. Worked examples and problems are given at the end of each chapter. Molecular Physical Chemistry: A Concise Introduction will be welcomed by graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as lecturers. Upon completion of this book the reader will see its subject matter as an integral part of their whole approach to chemistry. "Professor McLauchlin is certainly owed a debt of gratitude by the chemical community for this effort to bring enjoyment and understanding to the future generation. It will be interesting to see if this experiment helps students replace the fear of physical chemistry by an appreciation of its power and beauty." Professor William Klemperer, University of Harvard

Download or read book Molecular Driving Forces written by Ken Dill and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Driving Forces, Second Edition E-book is an introductory statistical thermodynamics text that describes the principles and forces that drive chemical and biological processes. It demonstrates how the complex behaviors of molecules can result from a few simple physical processes, and how simple models provide surprisingly accurate insights into the workings of the molecular world. Widely adopted in its First Edition, Molecular Driving Forces is regarded by teachers and students as an accessible textbook that illuminates underlying principles and concepts. The Second Edition includes two brand new chapters: (1) "Microscopic Dynamics" introduces single molecule experiments; and (2) "Molecular Machines" considers how nanoscale machines and engines work. "The Logic of Thermodynamics" has been expanded to its own chapter and now covers heat, work, processes, pathways, and cycles. New practical applications, examples, and end-of-chapter questions are integrated throughout the revised and updated text, exploring topics in biology, environmental and energy science, and nanotechnology. Written in a clear and reader-friendly style, the book provides an excellent introduction to the subject for novices while remaining a valuable resource for experts.

Book Synopsis Molecular Thermodynamics by : James W. Whalen
Download or read book Molecular Thermodynamics written by James W. Whalen and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1991-05-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking to introduce molecular thermodynamics in a way that is more congruent with the present day, it approaches the subject from a statistical basis, rather than traditional phenomenological bulk phase behavior and continuum mechanics arguments. Thus, topics are discussed in a different sequence than is encountered in more traditional texts; the presentation of material begins with the molecular argument and later expands to bulk phase behavior. Chapters cover thermal and mechanical processes, structured particle systems and interacting particle systems, multicomponent systems, macroscopic process considerations, electrolyte systems, and more. Worked examples and end-of-chapter problems are included.

Book Synopsis Non-equilibrium Energy Transformation Processes by : Viktor Holubec
Download or read book Non-equilibrium Energy Transformation Processes written by Viktor Holubec and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various experimental techniques have been advanced in recent years to measure non-equilibrium energy transformations on the microscopic scale of single molecules. In general, the systems studied in the corresponding experiments are exposed to strong thermal fluctuations and thus the relevant energetic variables such as work and heat become stochastic. This thesis addresses challenging theoretical problems in this active field of current research: 1) Exact analytical solutions of work and heat distributions for isothermal non-equilibrium processes in suitable models are obtained; 2) Corresponding solutions for cyclic processes involving two different heat reservoirs are found; 3) Optimization of periodic driving protocols for such cyclic processes with respect to maximal output power, efficiency and minimal power fluctuations is studied. The exact solutions for work and heat distributions provide a reference for theoretical investigations of more complicated models, giving insight into the structure of the tail of work distributions and serving as valuable test cases for simulations of the underlying stochastic processes.
Book Synopsis Applied Statistical Thermodynamics by : Klaus Lucas
Download or read book Applied Statistical Thermodynamics written by Klaus Lucas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book guides the reader from the foundations of statisti- cal thermodynamics including the theory of intermolecular forces to modern computer-aided applications in chemical en- gineering and physical chemistry. The approach is new. The foundations of quantum and statistical mechanics are presen- ted in a simple way and their applications to the prediction of fluid phase behavior of real systems are demonstrated. A particular effort is made to introduce the reader to expli- cit formulations of intermolecular interaction models and to show how these models influence the properties of fluid sy- stems. The established methods of statistical mechanics - computer simulation, perturbation theory, and numerical in- tegration - are discussed in a style appropriate for newcom- ers and are extensively applied. Numerous worked examples illustrate how practical calculations should be carried out.
