Book Synopsis Idealization XI: Historical Studies on Abstraction and Idealization by :
Download or read book Idealization XI: Historical Studies on Abstraction and Idealization written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions about abstraction are so important and so profound that this topic can hardly be neglected. It has inevitably cropped up again in various periods of philosophical enquiry. Despite these ancient roots and after the great debate that characterised the empirical and rationalistic tradition, interest in the problem has unfortunately been absent in large measure from the mainstream of mathematical logic and analytic philosophy. It seems that there is a gap between the epistemological theorization, in which it is difficult to find new insights on the problem of abstraction, and the historical studies concerning the development of philosophical thought. Such studies, however, present a more fertile ground for such insights. Here the reader will find presented for the first time a collection of papers about the topic, considered from an historical point of view together with an awareness of the need for building a bridge between historical research and theoretical speculation. Accordingly the volume consists of both general overviews which sketch the signifcance and the fortunes of abstraction in science, philosophy and logic (the first part) and historical case studies which focus on abstraction in particular thinkers (the second part). This volume is of interest for both general philosophers and historians of philosophy.

Book Synopsis Possibility Necessity and Existence by : Nino Langiulli
Download or read book Possibility Necessity and Existence written by Nino Langiulli and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this systematic historical analysis, Nino Langiulli focuses on a key philosophical issue, possibility, as it is refracted through the thought of the Italian philosopher Nicola Abbagnano. Langiulli examines Abbagnano's attempt to raise possibility to a level of prime importance and investigates his understanding of existence. In so doing, the author offers a sustained exposition of and argument with the account of possibility in the major thinkers of the Western tradition—Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Kierkegaard. He also makes pertinent comments on such philosophers as Diodorus Cronus, William of Ockham, Spinoza, Hobbes, and Hegel, as well as such logicians as DeMorgan and Boole. Nicola Abbagnano, who died in 1990, recently came to the attention of the general public as an influential teacher of author Umberto Eco. Creator of a dictionary of philosophy and author of a multiple-volume history of Western philosophy, Abbagnano was the only philosopher, according to Langiulli, to argue that "to be is to be possible." Even though the concept of probability and the discipline of statistics are grounded in the concept of possibility, philosophers throughout history have grappled with the problem of defining it. Possibility has been viewed by some as an empty concept, devoid of reality, and by others as reducible to actuality or necessity—concepts which are opposite to it. Langiulli analyzes and debates Abbagnano's treatment of necessity as secondary to possibility, and he addresses the philosopher's conversation with his predecessors as well as his European and American contemporaries. In the series Themes in the History of Philosophy, edited by Edith Wyschogrod.

Book Synopsis Trame del Fantastico by : Alessandro Cappabianca
Download or read book Trame del Fantastico written by Alessandro Cappabianca and published by Luigi Pellegrini Editore. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trame d'ombra, specchi oscuri, intrecci misteriosi.

Book Synopsis Catholic Dogmatic Theology: a Synthesis by : Nicolas Op Jean-Herve
Download or read book Catholic Dogmatic Theology: a Synthesis written by Nicolas Op Jean-Herve and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2024-05 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every discipline, including theology, requires a synthetic overview of its acquisitions and open questions, a kind of "topography" to guide the new student and refresh the gaze of specialists. In his Synthèse dogmatique, Fr. Jean-Hervé Nicolas, OP (1910-2001) presents just such a map of Thomistic theology, focusing on the central topics of Dogmatic Theology: The One and Triune God, Christology, Mariology, Ecclesiology, the Sacraments, and the Last Things. Drawing on decades of research and teaching, Fr. Nicolas synthetically presents these topics from a faithfully Thomistic perspective. While broadly and genially engaging the theological literature of the 20th century, he nonetheless remains deeply indebted to the Thomistic school that would have formed him in his youth as a theologian. This provides the reader with an unparalleled theological vision, masterfully bringing forth, at once, what is new and what is classical. Catholic Theology: A Dogmatic Synthesis is being published in English as a multi-volume work. In this volume, Fr. Nicolas takes up the raison d'être for the mission of the Holy Spirit: the work of sanctification in and through the Church, the mystical body of Christ and sacrament of salvation. In the ecclesiology articulated in this volume, he presents a theology of the Church that is at once wholly Thomistic and also faithful to the great themes of the Second Vatican Council, drawing especially from the works of Journet, Congar, and Bouyer, in critical dialogue with other theologians of his day. He then presents a complete and detailed sacramental theology, both concerning the nature of the sacraments in general, as well as concerning each sacrament in particular, carefully striving to balance positive and scholastic theology. Serving as a professor for decades, including at the University of Fribourg, Fr. Nicolas was at once a profound scholar and a masterful pedagogue. Gathering the work of a lifetime into a single pedagogical narrative, Fr. Nicolas's Catholic Theology: A Dogmatic Synthesis provides a resource for students and scholars alike. In view of the hyper-specialization of theology today, this series of volumes provides readers with a synthetic and sapiential overview of the fundamentals of dogmatic theology from a robust and profound Thomistic perspective.

Book Synopsis New Trends in Italian Cinema by : Carmela Scala
Download or read book New Trends in Italian Cinema written by Carmela Scala and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the legacy of the Neorealist film-making mode (or should we say mood?) a withered one? If not, what is the ideal dialogue between contemporary Italian directors and this momentous page of their cultural history all about? The aim of this book is to show that, far from being exhausted, the vivifying lymph of post-Second World War Italian Neorealism continues to sustain the aesthetic praxis of many artists. Predominantly, the staying power of Neorealism becomes apparent in the stringent moral urgency behind the realization of films such as Gomorra, Lamerica, or Terra Madre. All of them, although cinematically very sophisticated, retain the anxiety of engagement and the impassionate look upon reality that characterized the masterpieces of Rossellini, De Sica, and Visconti. All the essays in this collection highlight how, in responding to the unprecedented challenges of the New Millennium, Italian movie makers such as Garrone, Amelio, or Olmi, are able to recapture the ethical and methodological spirit of classic Neorealism in very interesting ways.
