Actually, Newton’s Physics provided the causes for being at rest more than those for motion. I don’t know if Newton liked to ski and eliminate friction much, but what he needed were forces that counteract the omnipresent force of gravity in order to explain why an object remained at rest. Wikipedia points out that while, according to the ancient Physics of the Greeks, the natural state of bodies was to be at rest, for Modern Physics, it is conserving the state of movement that they are in if the causes for being at rest, such as friction, are eliminated. If Newton’s Laws developed the dynamics of being at rest, the Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, both of which were around the beginning of the last century, have developed the kinematics of movement. That is, they are scientific theories that describe movement but not the causes for it, just its mathematical representation. Einstein’s General Relativity tries to add some causes, such as the geometric effect of the space-time continuum, but it is still a mathematical explanation, always biased and with many odd singularities.

As leis de Newton de 1687, primeira lei ou Lei de Inércia, segunda lei ou Lei de Força e terceira lei de Newton ou Lei de Ação e Reação, são as leis em que se apoia a dinâmica clássica ou estudo do movimento em relação às suas causas. Na realidade, a física de Newton proporcionou as causas do repouso mais do que as do movimento. Não sei se Newton gostava muito de esquiar e eliminar o atrito; mas o que necessitava eram forças que contrariassem a onipresente força da gravidade para explicar porque é que um objeto permanecia em repouso. Como assinala a Wikipédia, enquanto o estado natural dos corpos para a física antiga dos gregos era o de repouso, para a Física Moderna passa a ser o de conservação do estado de movimento em que se encontre, se se eliminam as causas do repouso, como o atrito ou fricção. Se as Leis de Newton desenvolveram a dinâmica do repouso, a Teoria da Relatividade e a Mecânica Quântica, ambas de inícios do século passado, desenvolveram a cinemática do movimento. Ou seja, são teorias científicas que descrevem o movimento mas não as causas do mesmo, unicamente a sua representação matemática. A Relatividade Geral de Einstein tenta acrescentar algumas causas, como o efeito geométrico do continuum espaço-tempo, mas fica-se por uma explicação matemática, sempre parcial e com muitas singularidades.

In realtà la fisica di Newton spiegò le cause dello stato di quiete anziché di quello del movimento. Non so se a Newton piacesse molto sciare ed eliminare l’attrito, ma ciò di cui aveva bisogno erano forze che facessero fronte all’onnipresente forza di gravità per spiegare perché un oggetto rimaneva in riposo. Come viene indicato da Wikipedia, mentre per la fisica antica dei Greci lo stato naturale dei corpi era la quiete, per la Fisica Moderna diventa quello della conservazione dello stato di movimento in cui si trovi, dopo aver eliminato le cause della quiete, come l’attrito o la frizione. Se le Leggi di Newton svilupparono la dinamica della quiete, la Teoria della Relatività e la Meccanica Quantica, entrambe degli inizi del secolo scorso, hanno sviluppato la cinematica del movimento. Sono, cioè, teorie scientifiche che descrivono il movimento, ma non le cause dello stesso, unicamente la sua rappresentazione matematica.
