Book Synopsis Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat by : National Research Council
Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Book Synopsis Simple Fly Fishing by : Yvon Chouinard
Download or read book Simple Fly Fishing written by Yvon Chouinard and published by Patagonia. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern-day fly fishing, like much in life, has become exceedingly complex, with high-tech gear, a confusing array of flies and terminal tackle, accompanied by high-priced fishing guides. This book reveals that the best way to catch trout is simply, with a rod and a fly and not much else. The wisdom in this book comes from a simpler time, when the premise was: the more you know, the less you need. It teaches the reader how to discover where the fish are, at what depth, and what they are feeding on. Then it describes the techniques needed to present a fly at that depth, make it look lifelike, and hook the fish. With chapters on wet flies, nymphs, and dry flies, its authors employ both the tenkara rod as well as regular fly fishing gear to cover all the bases. Illustrated by renowned fish artist James Prosek, with inspiring photographs and stories throughout, Simple Fly Fishing reveals the secrets and the soul of this captivating sport.

Book Synopsis It's More Than Fishing by : Pat Murray
Download or read book It's More Than Fishing written by Pat Murray and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only constant in fishing is that the fish are still trying to avoid being caught as hard today as they were 100 or 1,000 years ago. To improve as anglers, we must be willing to change and evolve.” It’s More Than Fishing is a how-to guide for Texas coastal fishing that addresses a number of key aspects of coastal angling, including the basics of patterning, fishing the Texas surf, choosing lures and baits, common myths and misconceptions, and what to keep in mind when hiring a fishing guide. In addition to these how-to elements, It’s More Than Fishing also includes insight and information from marine biologists, fishing legends, and guides about coastal angling and the importance of conservation. Author Pat Murray has spent more than two decades as a marine conservation professional and more than four decades as a Texas coastal angler, and he emphasizes the critical role of recreational anglers in protecting and enhancing marine resources. Each chapter begins with a handy summary to guide readers through the information, making it easy to jump around. Throughout the book, Murray reminds the reader that angling is part science, but it’s also part art. Similar to fine arts, culinary pursuits, and any other timeless crafts, angling is an evolving skill that has been in practice for centuries. Successful fishing requires a mixture of knowledge, practice, patience, and skill. Murray believes that if anglers view their pursuit as an art, they will not only invest in developing their skills, but their passion for fishing and ocean resources will increase along with their catches.
