Book excerpt: Generous-hearted and wickedly insightful, The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing is the New York Times bestselling novel by Melissa Bank The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing maps the progress of Jane Rosenal as she sets out on a personal and spirited expedition through the perilous terrain of sex, love, relationships, and the treacherous waters of the workplace. Soon Jane is swept off her feet by an older man and into a Fitzgeraldesque whirl of cocktail parties, country houses, and rules that were made to be broken, but comes to realise that it's a world where the stakes are much too high for comfort. With an unforgettable comic touch, Bank skilfully teases out universal issues, puts a clever new spin on the mating dance, and captures in perfect pitch what it's like to come of age as a young woman. 'This chronicle of a New Yorker's relationships has a wit and perceptiveness that singles it out from the crowd' Guardian 'As hilarious as Girls' Guide is, there's a wise, serious core here' Wall Street Journal 'A sexy, pour-your-heart-out, champagne tingle of a read-thoughtful, wise, and tell-all honest. Bank's is a voice that you'll remember' Cosmopolitan

Book Synopsis Hunting and Fishing in the New South by : Scott E. Giltner
Download or read book Hunting and Fishing in the New South written by Scott E. Giltner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.
Book Synopsis Hunting, Fishing, and Environmental Virtue by : Charles James List
Download or read book Hunting, Fishing, and Environmental Virtue written by Charles James List and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do hunting and fishing lead to the development of environmental virtues? This question is at the heart of philosopher Charles List's engaging study, which provides a defense of field sports when they are practiced and understood in an ethical manner. In his argument, List examines the connection between certain activities and the development of virtue in the classical sources, such as Aristotle and Plato. He then explores the work of Aldo Leopold, identifying three key environmental virtues that field sports instill in practitioners in the kind of conservation advocated by Leopold and others. After reviewing several powerful philosophical objections to his viewpoint, List considers the future of environmental sportsmanship. He suggests that, in order to incorporate a revived connection between field sports and environmental virtue, the practice of hunting and angling must undergo changes, including shifts that would impact hunter education, civic engagement, the role of firearms, our understanding of "game" animals, and alliances with other sorts of outdoor recreation. Hunting, Fishing, and Environmental Virtue will appeal to academics interested in the ethical issues surrounding hunting and fishing, professionals in wildlife management, and hunters and anglers interested in conservation.

Book Synopsis The Sportsman's Voice by : Mark Damian Duda
Download or read book The Sportsman's Voice written by Mark Damian Duda and published by Venture Pub. This book was released on 2010 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product Description: Nearly 34 million Americans ages 16 and older head outdoors to hunt and fish every year. Through hunting and fishing license fees and excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment, hunters and anglers are responsible for the majority of fish and wildlife conservation funding in the United States. Fish and wildlife management programs funded by these fees have conserved millions of acres of habitat and have brought back many species, including wild turkey, wood duck, bald eagle, and pronghorn antelope, from unhealthy population levels. Understanding hunting and fishing, and hunters and anglers as a constituency, is vital to effectively managing the nation's natural resources. Policy makers, legislators, fish and wildlife professionals, conservation organizations, and hunters and anglers themselves have an unmet need for science-based, comprehensive information on hunting and fishing to inform their understanding, communications, decision making, and planning. The Sportsman's Voice: Hunting and Fishing in America, is the first book that provides a comprehensive, up-to-date look at hunting and fishing in America. It bridges the gap between hundreds of scientific studies of the human dimensions of conservation and on-the-ground situations, giving this information meaningful context and real-world utility.

Book Synopsis Martha's Vineyard Outdoors by : Nelson Sigelman
Download or read book Martha's Vineyard Outdoors written by Nelson Sigelman and published by . This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha's Vineyard is a well known summer vacation spot. In this collection of columns, former Martha's Vineyard Times editor Nelson Sigelman describes an island preoccupation, less notorious than tourism but more obsessive, rooted in fishing, hunting and waterfowling traditions that shaped the island's character well before a mechanical shark named Bruce and presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama attracted slavish media attention to a 100-square mile speck off the coast of Massachusetts. Martha's Vineyard Outdoors casts a wide net. "The pleasures of Nelson Sigelman's distinctive voice held this non-fishing, non-hunting, feminist, tree-hugging pinko spellbound from the first column to the very last," said Island resident and Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks. The setting is Martha's Vineyard but the stories are rooted in the humor and love of the outdoors found in small communities across the country.
