Book excerpt: Co-published by The Vermont Fish & Widlife Department, The Nature Conservancy, and Vermont Land Trust--a revised and updated 2nd edition This book is a must-have for anyone wanting to understand Vermont's forests, wetlands, mountaintops, and shores. Richly illustrated with beautiful line drawings and stunning color photographs, this accessible field guide will delight outdoor explorers and armchair naturalists alike. The book starts with an introduction to the natural community concept and the factors influencing our natural systems, from wind and water to soil and rocks. Then, the book offers a lucid and enjoyable journey into Vermont's geologic past, with stories of colliding continents, sea floor sediments, and mysterious whale bones. This follows with a journey through all of Vermont's nine distinct biophysical regions, from the cold and wild Northeastern Highlands to the warm and dry Taconic Mountains. The bulk of the book describes Vermont's natural communities--its northern hardwood forests, dry oak woodlands, alpine tundra, cedar swamps, bogs, and marshes--in comprehensive detail. Ecological settings, including geology, soils, climate, and natural disturbance processes, are described for each community, along with complete lists of characteristic plants and animals, as well as places to visit. Wetland, Woodland, Wildland is the definitive guide to Vermont's natural communities, and is packed with information unavailable elsewhere. It offers practical information for naturalists, teachers, students, landowners, land managers, foresters, conservation planners, and all those with a love of nature who want to learn more about their surroundings. The first edition of this book, published in 2000, has become a mainstay for naturalists and students throughout Vermont and surrounding states and provinces. This second edition is completely updated to incorporate new research and a growing knowledge about natural communities, as well as a deeper understanding of climate change and its implications for conservation into the future. This newly updated book will be a prized addition to your natural history library, but it won't remain on the shelf. You will want to take it with you every time you explore the outdoors. Each paragraph will bring new insights and will deepen your understanding and appreciation of wild nature around you. You will surely want to share this book with friends.

Book excerpt: Brook trout are native in the Eastern United States and were the most important fly rod gamefish for early anglers, until they were supplanted by nonnative brown and rainbow trout. Today, brook trout are indicators of cold, clean water and healthy ecosystems, and in almost every place they are found, anglers will also find wild country and relative solitude. They have been introduced throughout the Rocky Mountains, where they grow large and abundant. This is the most complete guide to brook trout ever written and not only includes information on tackle and techniques but important conservation information and an in-depth section on top brook trout destinations, from Maine to Argentina. With a foreword by Ted Williams.

Book excerpt: What if society looked at addiction without judgement? Unstitched shares the powerful story of one librarian’s quest to understand the impact of addiction fed by stigma and inevitable secrecy. The opioid epidemic has hit people in communities large and small and across all socio-economic classes. What should each of us know about it, and do about it? Unstitched moves readers from feelings of helplessness and blame into empathy, ultimately helping friends, family, and community members separate the disease of addiction from the person underneath. A stranger, rumored to be a heroin addict, repeatedly breaks into the small-town library Brett Ann Stanciu runs. After she tries to get law enforcement to take meaningful action against him—elementary school children and young parents with babies frequent the place after all—he dies by suicide. When she realizes how little she knows about opioid misuse, she sets out on a mission, seeking insight from others, such as people in recovery, treatment providers, the town police chief, and Vermont's US attorney. Stanciu’s journey leads to compassionate generosity, renewed faith, and ultimately a measure of personal redemption as she realizes she has a role to play in helping the people of her community stitch themselves back together.

Excerpt: ... 8.-AN ANNOTATED CATALOGUE OF THE FISHES KNOWN FROM THE STATE OF VERMONT. By Barton W. Eveemann And William C. Kendall. This paper is based chiefly upon observations and collections made in July, 1894, by the senior author and Mr. Barton A. Bean, of the United States National Museum, while engaged in the investigation of the waters along the Canadian border of the United States.under the direction of Mr. Richard Eathbun, the representative of the United States on the International Fishery Commission. The report upon the special purpose of the investigation has been made to Mr. Eathbun. The present paper is a report upon the species of fishes collected or known to occur in the waters of Vermont. We have included not only the species obtained in 1894, but all others which have been recorded from that State by other writers. The only ichthyologist who has written extensively upon the fishes of Vermont is the Eev. Zadock Thompson, of Burlington. In 1842 Mr. Thompson published his 11 History of Vermont, Natural, Civil, and Statistical, in three parts, with a new map of the State and 200 engravings." Twenty-five pages of this interesting and very creditable volume are devoted to the fishes of the State. Not only does he give a catalogue of the species known to him to occur in the State, but much interesting information concerning the habits of many of them. This list and the annotations are particularly valuable, as they are based almost wholly upon the personal observations of Mr. Thompson, who was for many years a careful and conscientious student of the natural history of the region in which he lived. The total number of species of Vermont fishes listed by Mr. Thompson is 48; these represent 43 species as we now understand them. Among the...
