Book excerpt: The 1988 Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium, held in Portland, Oregon, USA, was based on a theme of "Problems and Solutions in Developed River Systems." The emphasis was upon developed river systems both because development is more the norm than nondevelopment and because the seemingly worst problems-hence, the biggest challenges-for fish in rivers result from development. Further, one can reasonably predict that development will continue, so unless adequate solutions are found, river-based fisheries will experience progressiverly greater problems. Most of the symposium was deveoted to solutions in two main and widely divergent topics: habitat improvement and restoration, and mitigration via hatcheries. Although these topics may seem strange bedfewllows, they define the main alternatives available to fishery managers for correcting or mitigating fishery losses in developed rivers, and they are the professional concerns of bioengineering. In this regard, it was a primary goal of the sterring committee to bring together and facilitate information exchange between biologist and engineers so that each group could gain a better appreciation for the other's perspectives, constraints, and strengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flowing Water Fish Culture provides an in-depth discussion of the husbandry of fin fish in a stream of water. It guides the reader through the technical considerations of intensive aquaculture, including fish growth rates, hydraulic characteristics of fish rearing units, oxygen consumption rates in relation to oxygen solubility and fish tolerance of hypoxia, and water reconditioning by reaeration and ammonia filtration. Unlike other publications that provide only general overviews on the subject, this text/reference offers specific details that will be useful in the actual design and operation of a facility. Problem sets at the end of each chapter provide ample opportunity to develop skills. The information in the book is valuable for those teaching, considering, or practicing aquaculture at intensity levels ranging from conventional single-pass trout hatcheries to closed aquaculture systems.

Book excerpt: The focus of this report is technologies for fish passage around hydropower generation facilities and protection against entrainment and turbine mortality. Emphasis is given to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-licensed hydropower projects where fish protection is a subject of controversy and congressional interest due to the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA). Thus institutional issues related to FERC-relicensing are also discussed. (Major points of controversy are high-lighted in box 1.1).

Book excerpt: Fish culture in hatcheries and other aquacultural facilities is becoming much more intensive all over the world. The success of all kinds of fish rearing depends on the quality of management and this depends, in turn, on understanding the biology of fishes and the aquatic environment in which they live. This book directly addresses the relationship between the aquatic environment and the fishes. An understanding of this by the reader will result in a reduction of disease outbreaks through improved management.

In the United States, freshwater aquaculture is rapidly becoming a significant commercial activity; however, marine aquaculture has lagged behind. This book examines the obstacles to developing marine aquaculture in the United States and offers specific recommendations for technology and policy strategies to encourage this industry. The volume provides a wealth of information on the status of marine aquacultureâ€"including comparisons between U.S. and foreign approaches to policy and technology and of the diverse species under culture. Marine Aquaculture also describes problems of coordination of regulatory policy among various federal, state, and local government agencies and escalating competition for the use of coastal waters. It addresses environmental concerns and suggests engineering and research strategies for alleviating negative impacts from marine aquaculture operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, biologists have marvelled at how anadromous salmonids – fish that pass from rivers into oceans and back again – survive as they migrate between these two very different environments. Yet, relatively little is understood about what happens to salmonid species (including salmon, steelhead, char, and trout) in the estuaries where they make this transition from fresh to salt water. This book explains the critical role estuaries play in salmonid survival. Ecology of Salmonids in Estuaries around the World synthesizes information from a vast array of literature, to describe the specific adaptation of eighteen anadromous salmonids in four genera (Hucho, Oncorhynchus, Salmo, and Salvelinus) explain the ecological relationships between anadromous salmonids, the fish they coexist with, and their estuarine habitat discuss key fitness elements salmonids need for survival (including those relating to osmoregulation, growth and feeding mechanisms, and biotic interactions) provide guidance on how to conduct estuarine sampling and scientific aspects of management and recovery plans offer directions for future research. The critical reference is further enhanced by extensive supplementary appendices that are available online, including data tables, additional references on estuarine salmonids, and a primer on estuaries and salmonids for citizen scientists.
