Book excerpt: The St. Paul District, US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center examined the effects of locks and dams (Figure 1) on longitudinal fish movement in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). The objective of this Long Term Resource Monitoring Program study was to estimate the opportunity for upriver passage through dams by adult migratory fishes. I identified UMR migratory fish species, estimated current velocities through gate openings on UMR dams, compiled information on migration behavior, and estimated the swimming for north performance of UMR migratory fishes. I used this information in combination with river discharge and dam operation records to estimate opportunity for upriver fish passage through the dams. Another objective was to examine the records of fish movements through UMR dams and to determine the head (difference between tailwater and pool water levels) when the fish passed through the dams. These results, reported in an earlier Project Status Report (PSR96 O4), summarized the findings of 126 UMR fish mark-recapture and telemetry studies.

Book excerpt: During the mid-1970's, an assessment of the potential for expansion of the nation's hydroelectric generating capabilities was initiated by the passage of the Water Resources Development Act (PL 94-587). Economic feasibility studies for small-scale hydropower development were performed for sites on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been asked to provide input into the final feasibility report and draft Environmental Impact Statements for hydropower development at Locks and Dams 5 and 8. This report as the following objective: to compile, review, and analyze existing information on movements of adult fish through dams on the UMR from St. Anthony Falls to Lock and Dam 14. Secondary objectives include (1) identification of information gaps about adult fish movements and UMR fisheries in general that would prevent an accurate assessment of the impacts of small-scale hydropower development on UMR fisheries; and (2) identification of impact assessment techniques, approaches, and means of obtaining the necessary data for an assessment of the impacts of small-scale hydropower development on ichthyoplankton and UMR fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated the widespread existence of spatio-temporal variations in the abundance and distribution of species of freshwater fishes, previously assumed not to move between habitats. These movements are often on a seasonal or ontogenetic basis, for spawning, feeding and refuge, and in many cases are fundamental for the successful completion of lifecycles. This important book provides a single source for a range of previously widely dispersed information on these movements of fish in fresh waters, covering potamodromous fishes as well as the more familiar diadromous species, worldwide. Contents include full descriptions of types of migration and spatial behaviour, the stimulus and capacity for fish to migrate, the effects of climate on patterns of migratory behaviour, a taxonomic analysis (mostly by family) of freshwater fish migration, methods for studying migration, and details of the impacts of man's activities on freshwater fish migration. Migration of Freshwater Fishes provides an excellent and comprehensive reference to which the river manager, biologist or student can now refer to obtain information, advice and current opinion on the migratory behaviour of most taxonomic groups of fishes occurring in fresh water. University libraries and aquatic research stations should also have copies of this essential reference book on their shelves. Well-known international authors. Of great commercial importance to fisheries and professional angling bodies. Draws together much new information in one place. Detailed review of world wide migratory behaviour for most groups of freshwater fishes. Pure and applied relevance, for academics, fisheries scientists, river managers and conservationists. This comprehensive book includes 67 tables and figures and over 1,400 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six wing dams and an adjacent side channel in Pool 13 of the Upper Mississippi River were studied in the initial phase (pre-notching) of a project to determine the effects of wing dam notching on fish and aquatic community characteristics. Fifty two species of fish were caught in the study area with hoop nets, electrofishing gear, and a small-mesh seine. Thirty eight fish species were caught on or near wing dams. Electrofishing provided the widest variety of fish species and hoop netting provided the least. Electrofishing and hoop net catches were influenced by river stage or discharge. Species composition of the catches changed more dramatically from sampling month to month than between kinds of habitat. Fish were caught in greatest numbers and diversity throughout the study area in August. Discharge varied from month to month and year to year. Water temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration were nearly uniform with depth and among sampling sites each month. Height of wing dams and their position with respect to an upstream bend in the river and to other wing dams influenced current velocity in the study area. Current sweeping over submerged wing dams and over emergent wing dams during high river stages helps prevent sediment accretion between them.
