Book Synopsis Studies on the Ecology of Tropical Zooplankton by : Henri J. Dumont
Download or read book Studies on the Ecology of Tropical Zooplankton written by Henri J. Dumont and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports on the findings of experts on tropical zooplankton gathered at a meeting in Kariba, Zimbabwe, in 1991. Some basic questions were asked on community composition and biodiversity in the tropics versus the non-tropics. Old ideas on the nature of zooplankton, which were found to be wider than the `classical' rotifers, cladocerans and copepods, as well as on the number of species in tropical waters, are now beginning to break down accordingly as more and more blank spots in the tropics are explored and as more in-depth studies on the zooplankton of tropical lakes are becoming available. This volume contains a mix of papers discussing the two alternative controls (bottom-up and top-down) of zooplankton community structure and these constitute another step towards a coherent theory of tropical ecosystem theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the latest research in fish nutrition, this volume revises and combines the 1981 edition on coldwater fish and the 1983 edition on warmwater fish and shellfish. In addition to updating requirements for energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins, this book provides, for the first time, summary tables on nutrient requirements of a variety of fish species, including channel catfish, rainbow trout, Pacific salmon, carp, and tilapia. Tabular data on amino acid requirements of 11 species are also included. Shellfish are not included in this edition because of lack of scientific information.
Book Synopsis Clarias Gariepinus Aquaculture Potential in Lake Victoria Basin Uganda by : Ajangale Nelly Isyagi
Download or read book Clarias Gariepinus Aquaculture Potential in Lake Victoria Basin Uganda written by Ajangale Nelly Isyagi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book determines the production and economic potential of farming the African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) within the Lake Victoria Basin, Uganda. The African Catfish is among the indigenous catfishes of the region. The assessment was done based on an analysis of local resources using the 'sustainable livelihood framework' to ascertain what the real opportunities and constraints were for farming the African catfish in both qualitative and quantitative terms. The sustainable livelihoods framework makes personal, household or community assets the centre of its analysis, rather than starting with poverty or problems, as in a needs based analysis recognizing resources as potential assets, notably: human, natural, financial, social and physical. A participatory approach was used in data collection and preliminary analysis of primary data. Key factors notably input availability, markets, prices were then incorporated using multivariate analysis to design experiments that gave provided data for the bio-economic analysis and modelling of promising production options.
Book Synopsis Limnology, Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes by : Thomas C Johnson
Download or read book Limnology, Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes written by Thomas C Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large lakes of the East African Rift Valley are among the oldest on Earth, and are vital resources for the people of their basins. They are unique among the large lakes of the world in terms of their sensitivity to climatic change, rich and diverse populations of endemic species, circulation dynamics and water-column chemistry, and long, continuous records of past climatic change. A comprehensive study of the large African lakes is long overdue. The scientific justification for such an effort is noted in the previous paragraph and is illustrated in great detail in this volume. Societal need for the sustainable utilization of these lakes offers an even more compelling reason for examination of biological food webs, water quality, and past climate variability in East Africa. The lakes provide the most important source of protein for the people of the African Rift Valley, and fish populations are shifting dramatically in response to fishing pressure, introduction of exotic species, land use impact on water quality, and perhaps climatic change. Current estimates of primary productivity, the underpinning of the food resource, are extremely crude and based on only a few spot measurements.

Book Synopsis Fish Farming Household Food Security and Livelihoods in Western Kenya by : Zacharia Shitote
Download or read book Fish Farming Household Food Security and Livelihoods in Western Kenya written by Zacharia Shitote and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the socio-economic characteristics of fish farmers and their practices; opportunities and challenges facing fish farming development; effect of fish farming on household food security and livelihoods and strategic options for improving fish farming for enhancing household food security and livelihoods in Western Kenya. Kenyan fish farming potential has been underexploited and it remains under developed where pond productivity is low and not rising, despite the effort of several players. Capture fish in Lake Victoria and rivers has subsequently declined due to overfishing and influence of water hyacinth. Fish farming has accounted for only about 3% of total fish production until the introduction of the Fish Farming Enterprise Productivity Program in 2009 a programme by Kenyan Government initiatives to stimulate economic development and foster economic recovery, poverty alleviation and spur development. The challenges facing fish farming development in Kenya is shortage of good quality seed and feeds. Tilapia species is mostly cultured because of the following attributes; grows faster, breeds easily in ponds, tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions.
