Book Synopsis African Water Resource Database: Technical manual and workbook. Technical manual by : Jeff Jenness
Download or read book African Water Resource Database: Technical manual and workbook. Technical manual written by Jeff Jenness and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Water Resource Database (AWRD) is a set of data and custom-designed tools, combined in a geographic information system (GIS) analytical framework, aimed at facilitating responsible inland aquatic resource management with a focus on inland fisheries and aquaculture. It thus provides a valuable instrument to promote food security. The AWRD data archive includes an extensive collection of datasets covering the African continent, including: surface waterbodies, watersheds, aquatic species, rivers, political boundaries, population density, soils, satellite imagery and many other physiographic and climatological data. This technical paper is the second of two publications about the AWRD, and it includes a technical manual for spatial analysts and a workbook for university students and teachers. The first part of this technical paper is available separately (ISBN 9789251057407).
Book Synopsis Aquaculture Technology in Developing Countries by : Randall E. Brummett
Download or read book Aquaculture Technology in Developing Countries written by Randall E. Brummett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture technology has been evolving rapidly over the last two decades, led by an increasingly skilled cadre of researchers in developing countries. Rather than copying, or adapting work done in industrialized countries to their situations, these scientists are moving aquaculture research out of the box to explore species and production systems relevant to their natural resources, economies and social institutions. Studies from India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa are highlighted in this collection of papers, covering the entire gamut of aquaculture science from comparison of tilapia breeds, novel feed ingredients for indigenous species, improving disease resistance, water-use efficiency, traditional farming systems, spatial planning and economics. More than a how-to book, this volume introduces the researchers and institutions leading the development of aquaculture as it expands into new frontiers. This book was based on a special issue of the Journal of Applied Aquaculture.

Book Synopsis Report of the Advisory Roundtable on the Assessment of Inland Fisheries by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Report of the Advisory Roundtable on the Assessment of Inland Fisheries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two and a half day Advisory Roundtable was convened to contribute to FAO’s response to the request by the 32nd Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI), to advise FAO on its approach to developing a more comprehensive report on methods and data and analytical approach, which could be used to provide a credible, objective and replicable assessment of inland fisheries; and ii) provide guidance on tools that could be provided to member states seeking advice with respect to assessing the status of their inland fisheries (yield/production, threats & drivers), predicting future impacts and how to quantify the effect of mitigation/adaptation measures on fisheries. The roundtable reviewed and discussed the background that had led up to the meeting to scrutinize the purpose of an assessment and the scope of coverage and how this could be used to determine the status of inland fisheries. It further developed the criteria to conduct such an assessment, and then attempted to apply the approach to a number of basins. This practical exercise was based on concrete examples from countries or basins with which the experts were familiar. It was concluded by the roundtable, that the use of a dual index approach is the right way to go, and that it can be used to assess fisheries both at the national, basin, regional and global levels although different levels of resolution will be required and may thus have somewhat different data requirements. Adding a valuation element will direct investment towards the fisheries that provides most benefit to society in the context of the priorities set at the national level. At the national level, data may include yields, catches, threats, and measures that can be used to estimate future adaptive capacity. For global level analysis an index approach will be necessary relying on “big” data. Any information system should be useful to serve, first and foremost, the countries that collect/analyse and provide the data. Reports to FAO that could be compiled into a global picture of the state of inland fisheries would be a value added product of this process. The national reports would also have utility in reporting on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals/Aichi Targets.
