Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 3.67, , course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: The study examined the impact of government fiscal and monetary policies on economic growth within the period of 33 years (1981-2014). Time series data were derived from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, while the method of analysis was the Johansen Cointegration test, vector error correction method and the Wald test of coefficient. The result of the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between explanatory variables (government expenditure, interest rate and money supply) taken jointly and the dependent variable (real gross domestic product) in the long run. The coefficient of error correction term is -0.02 showing a 2% yearly adjustment towards the long run equilibrium. This proves that there is a relationship between the dependent variable- real gross domestic product and the independent variables - government expenditure, money supply and interest rate in the long run. The estimated coefficients of the short run model indicate no significant relationship between the dependent variable real gross domestic product and independent variables government expenditure, money supply and interest rates taken together but individually a short run relationship exist between the fiscal variable (government expenditure) and real GDP and between the monetary variable (money supply and interest rate) and real GDP. The policy implication of these findings is that more strategies needs to be put in place in order to ensure that monetary and fiscal policies taken jointly positively impacts on economic growth the in the shortrun.

It refers to expenses incurred by the government for the maintenance of itself and provision of public goods, services, and works needed to foster or promote economic growth and improve the welfare of people in the society. This study examined the effect of fiscal policy on real sector growth in Nigeria. Focusing on government capital expenditure and its effect on the growth of the agricultural sector in Nigeria. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design and regression analysis as methodology using ARDL. Descriptive statistics and graphs were also used to complement the regression result. The result from the study found that there is a significant and positive effect of government capital expenditure on the growth of the agricultural sector in Nigeria. The implication of the study is that fiscal policy through government capital expenditure will increase the agricultural sector growth and thereby increases its contributions to the growth of the economy. This means that when there is enough revenue, the government only spends more money on infrastructural development that can help the agriculture sectors to grow by having access to good road and electricity. The result is an indication that government capital spending in Nigeria has been able to spur the economic growth of Nigeria through agricultural sector output. Based on the findings, the study makes the following recommendations; Government of Nigeria should adhere strictly to the implementation of government spending so as to increase the level of real sector development in Nigeria which will have the capacity to stimulate economic growth and create employment.

Book excerpt: Nigeria has experienced significant economic progress since publication in 1999 of the first edition of Perspectives on Nigerian Economic Development. Two main drivers of this progress have been the beneficial return to democratic rule and the implementation of key economic reforms, particularly in pursuing external debt relief, implementing excess crude account to stabilize revenue volatility, introducing contributory pension schemes and taking steps to privatize key sectors such as telecommunications. This volume is focused on issues relating to good political and corporate governance and national development; budget and fiscal policy; the Nigerian financial and capital markets and banking. Part one deals with the issues of globalisation and how Nigeria can play in the emergent environment. Part two (Managing the Nigerian Economy), Part three (Strengthening the Nigerian Banking Sector and Part Four (Entrepreneurship and Corporate Governance) proffers ways and means of handling these intertwined aspects of national challenges. The final part - Key Sector Issues deals with three vital areas - Education, Transportation, and Oil and Gas.

Book excerpt: This research work is aimed at answering the questions of why the unimpressive performance of the Nigerian economy, the high unemployment rate, and the increasing cost of living in Nigeria. Three models were formulated addressing the macro-economic variables -economic growth, unemployment, and inflation. It employed the distributed lag model approach in analyzing the impact of fiscal policy measures on each macro-economic variable. The results indicate that government revenue significantly reduces economic growth by 7.85% and increases unemployment by 3.33% in the following year, government debt stock significantly boosts economic growth and reduces unemployment in the following year by 1.88% and 4.3% respectively, while government expenditure boosts the growth of the economy by 5.43%, reduces unemployment by 1.09% but spurs inflation by 8.95%. It is therefore evident from the study that reducing the tax burden while maintaining fiscal deficit and growing government expenditure is still necessary if the economy must be set on the path of growth and stability.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of inflation on economic growth in the context of an emerging market using empirical evidence from Nigeria. Using time series data spanning forty one years (1970-2011) which was obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin volume 22, and Central Bank of Nigeria official website, the nature of the relationship existing between the focus variables - economic growth (proxied by real Gross Domestic Product, GDP) and inflation rate was explored. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) and Philip-Perron (PP) tests were used to test for the stationary of the variables while the granger causality test was employed to ascertain the direction of influence between inflation and economic growth in Nigeria. The follow research questions guided this study: What is the trend of inflation in Nigeria? Why have all the policies used unable to reduce inflation rate to an acceptable level? What is the impact of inflation of Nigerian economic growth? Inflation growth has been the macro-economic problem in Nigeria that seems to be intractable over the years; Nigeria government has adopted various measures (both monetary and fiscal policies) to curb or reduce inflation growth to an acceptable level but all these policies seem to have no effects. This gave rise to the following research questions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of monetary and fiscal policies of the government on the industrial and agricultural growth of Nigerian economy. Three research questions were raised and three hypotheses formulated to aid the research work. The research made use of secondary data, which was obtained from CBN statistical bulletins of various years. Hypotheses were subjected to statistical test using regression analysis which established a functional relationship between the independent variables (manufacturing output, exchange rate and indene of industrial production) and dependent variable gross domestic product (GDP). The result of the finding showed that exchange rate has a strong positive impact on the economy. The research recommends amongst others the need for a strategic step to be taken by the policy maker in formulation and implementation of right investment-induced policies and programmes that would enhance the nation's potentials of benefiting from the gains of globalization while solving the problem that may accrued thereof with the general conclusion that the manufacturing sub-sector could bring about an wholesome multiplier effects on the economy as the nation and manufacturing sector could be better positioned to benefit from the gains of globalization if policies and programmes are properly channeled towards addressing the perennial problem of our economy.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: M.Phil/PhD, University of Ibadan, course: Economis, language: English, abstract: This study examined the relationship between tax structure and economic growth in Nigeria using annual data between 1970 to 2007. The motivation is to track the impact of the observed change in the tax structure on economic growth in order to inform policy. Two tax structures namely pre Value Added Tax (VAT) and post VAT were identified and their impacts evaluated. The empirical analysis was anchored on the endogenous growth theoretical framework which allowed for linking tax structures to growth. Econometric models were then developed to explore the relationship between the identified tax structures and economic growth. The first model present a growth equation with average tax rate variable, while the second model is where the specific tax variables were included alongside variables in the first model. The third, fourth and fifth models were used to test the robustness of the second model. This was accomplished basically by introducing additional variables. Prior to the empirical estimations, the standard tests of unit root and co-integration analysis were conducted to ascertain the appropriate estimation procedure and technique(s) to use. The unit root test show that all the variables of the models are stationary at the first difference, while the co-integration analysis indicates that one model out of the five models had no co-integrating relationship, while the rest had co integrating relationships. On the basis of these tests results, the model for which we found no co-integrating relationship was estimated using the Vector Auto Regression (VAR) technique while the others with co-integrating relationship were estimated via the Error Correction Modeling (ECM) technique. Further to this, the Granger Causality test was also conducted to ascertain the direction of causality among the variab
