Book excerpt: As American students progress through the educational system, they encounter various key points of transition as they change from one school to another because they have completed the grades offered in a certain school. The transition from middle school to high school may include moments of significant social and academic achievement for students; however, that is not always the case. Without necessary support students may deviate away from the intended progression and be at risk of significant academic and social struggles. Students are not always equipped with the appropriate skills and resources that might otherwise ensure a successful transition. School educators have a moral and ethical responsibility to recognize problem areas with periods of transition and develop and implement programs to guarantee every student has the opportunity to succeed. This project proposes a comprehensive transition program for incoming ninth grade students designed by the school counselor. The program includes a Welcome Day-First year student orientation, peer transition program, peer tutoring, and First-Year Student Fridays to provide students with the resources, skills, and knowledge to help them have a successful first year in high school.
