The program includes a Welcome Day-First year student orientation, peer transition program, peer tutoring, and First-Year Student Fridays to provide students with the resources, skills, and knowledge to help them have a successful first year in high school.

Book excerpt: This study focused on the successes and challenges small school (school population between 300-900 students) administrators and teachers experienced when designing, implementing, and sustaining their ninth-grade transition programs. The purpose of this study was to add valuable insight to the knowledge that currently existed for the development and implementation of freshman transition programs. This study identified common and unique elements in the implementation designs of transition programs in four small high schools in the state of Virginia. Fifty-two teachers were surveyed and the four high school principals completed their questionnaires. Significant differences were noted in the years of teaching experience of teachers in the freshman transition program and the use of a focused study hall during school hours. Results indicated that high school teams developing a freshman transition program should include teachers in the planning process, pre- high-school activities for the incoming freshmen, the availability of catch-up courses, academic interventions, improving communication gaps, using data to monitor student achievement.

One area of interest is the correlation between success in the ninth grade and long-term high school success. To help achieve ninth grade year success, many school have turned towards freshman transition programs. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a relationship existed between students participating in a comprehensive freshman transition program and higher persistence in high school graduation. This study examined cohorts of students who completed a comprehensive transition program, and their graduation status after four years of high school. Four-year cohort graduation status was collected for the two graduating classes before the implementation of the transition program, and for the following three years after implementation of the transition program. This data was compared using a chi-square to test for significance. The results of this study found a significant relationship between participating in the transition program and increased persistence to high school graduation.

Book excerpt: The transition to high school may be difficult for new freshmen and may actually be feared by some. Several high schools have adopted freshman transition programs as a way to assist freshmen with many complex issues inherent in the first year experience of high school. This study used an experimental design by using three high schools in Franklin County, Kansas to investigate one particular freshman transition program which has a unique leadership component, the LINK program. Its purpose was to see if the LINK program had a significant effect on the level of success experienced by freshmen in their first year of high school. Success in the freshmen year was measured by three variables -- the perceived level of positivity, the perceived level of participation and involvement, and the perceived level of feelings of support freshmen experienced from their school in their first year. The study found the LINK program did not significantly effect the level of success experienced by freshmen, but suggested how the LINK program and other freshmen transition programs may continue to be viewed in terms of their contribution to creating a more positive first year experience for freshmen.
