I looked up at one of the TVs just in time to see the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. My heart sank to my toes. I thought, as a truck driver in the Louisiana National Guard, active duty consisted of dealing with hurricanes and floods, not war. That is what the Army is for. I'm still in school. Perhaps my contract will be up in time. National Guard truck drivers are not war heroes. Little did I know that a phone call in the middle of a blind date would prove me so wrong. Now that an active-duty deployment to Iraq is in my future, my concern is, Will I be the same person when I come back? From the Journals I kept daily, this is a "Walk in My Boots".

Book excerpt: Moriarty, New Mexico is about as far as Logan Pierce got before the money and the El Camino gave out. He‘d hoped for a clean start in life as a field mechanic working for any company willing to pay top dollar for his skills in the oil fields of West Texas. Low on funds and out of options, he begins a change of course in his mechanic career and takes a local job as a technician at Duggan's Truck Stop. The truck stop is a miniature city within a city that has all the luxuries for a home away from home feel for the over-the-road truck driver. Under it all, Logan discovers there is also a dark side which people claim is operated by the Dixie Mafia. Then there is the persistent rumor that affiliates of the Mafia are looking for a quarter-million in missing cash skimmed from over a five-year time frame. The job was meant to be a temporary solution but that was before Amy Hauser entered the picture and presented him with additional problems. They want nothing more than to leave New Mexico for a new life, but then again…there’s that rumor of a quarter-million in missing mob cash. And Logan just may well have discovered where it’s hidden, but soon finds that some people want it more.

Aira is this way because Benji is gone and he was the man who had taught her what love is. That magical love that can have you smiling so hard that your face hurts. Aira remembered Benji, his scent and his love for her. Her keen senses felt him when he was coming and mellowed when he left the room. If it wasn’t for her two best friends Mercedes and Adam making her laugh when she would suddenly begin crying from the thought of him, Aira would have been lost in grief, loss in the world without her husband Benji.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, I was an American hitchhiker. I hitched across the entire United States and back twice. Once I made it from Portland, Oregon, to Baltimore, Maryland, in four and a half days. On another trip, I hitched from Birmingham, Alabama, to Baltimore in twenty hours. I hitched down the East Coast and up the West Coast. I rode across Nebraska in the back of a pickup truck with a driver who wouldnt stop for anything and spent the night in a school bus in Bodega Bay, California. I endured a continuous stream of homosexual advances from drivers in the Bay Area and was terrified by a pack of wild dogs while squatting on Crow Indian land. I hopped a freight train in Portland, Oregon, and spent the night under the famous Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. I almost got busted in Montana for smoking pot out of an empty beer can and was hassled by cops in New Orleans and Texas. I narrowly escaped injury at the hands of commercial fishermen in Boston, who caught me sleeping in their boat, and had the bejesus scared out of me by a sixty-five-year-old Massachusetts woman who used her 1963 Rambler as an offensive weapon. I met a bunch of gay guys, truck drivers, stoners, petty thieves, ex-cons, heavily armed rednecks, and some very nice people too. I was a lot younger then, but I wouldnt trade those experiences for the world. You hardly ever see hitchhikers anymore, but a few years ago, we were everywhere. But before I launch into my story, a brief history lesson is in order.

Who is she, where'd she come from, and how did she end up fully clothed on the shore of a mountain lake? Such are the questions that a small town sheriff with higher aspirations must try and solve when he has no experience whatsoever with murder or anything close to it. And yet if his political dreams are to be realized, he must solve the crime that has a ripple effect on a whole lot of locals. As with any town, large or small, there are people with dark secrets including everything from a coroner with a former drug habit, to a cop who once shot a girl, and a wife's dalliances and the town's most powerful man who would like the whole investigation to go away. "...a rollicking ride, a mix of mystery and murder. Bill Brooks has a gift for narrative and his unique phraseology won't go unnoticed. This is a gripping story, suspenseful and utterly engaging.' —Readers' Favorite

Book excerpt: Steve Aldman and his friend Mike have just graduated from college and board a plane to Thailand. They plan to teach English for one year at a university in Bangkok. Steve is a strong, austere young man who believes he can only depend on himself. Thailand is about to be the shock of his life. From the moment he lands, Steve feels conflicted. Can he apply his well-honed defenses in Thailand? Even with this struggle towards maturity, Steve's deep and humorous narrative carries the reader throughout Thailand. Through him, we learn the Thai language and culture, taste its many delicacies and travel throughout most of the country. Steve also explores Laos, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The adventures range from the beautiful to the ridiculous. Examples include: ethereal sunrises, trekking up the Himalayan Mountains, drinking snake blood for dinner and sneaking into an international Communist convention. During this journey, Steve learns as much about himself as he does about those around him. Through the people Steve meets, we learn the geopolitical histories and belief systems of various Asian cultures. These diverse exposures make a lasting impression on Steve and he blends aspects of each exotic perspective into his own life attitude. What will it do to you?

Book excerpt: How do you survive when everything you believed about the world is turned upside down? In 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War, testosterone-fueled fighter pilots take off from Udorn Air Base in Thailand on sorties over dangerous targets in North Vietnam. Some come back, many do not. Into this fog of war enters Captain Pilato, a starry-eyed idealist, assigned to manage the officers' club. The fighter pilots christen the officers' club "Angel's Truck Stop," which becomes the backdrop for the conflicts, challenges, and choices she encounters. It reveals a woman's struggle to fit into a man's world. As the realities of war erode her ideals, she realizes the future doesn't hold the certainties it once did. Angel's Truck Stop is hilarious and at times, heart- wrenching. This memoir keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end.

Book excerpt: A new edition of a sports icon's memoir, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Kathrine Switzer's historic running of the Boston Marathon as the first woman to run. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially run what was then the all-male Boston Marathon, infuriating one of the event's directors who attempted to violently eject her. In one of the most iconic sports moments, Switzer escaped and finished the race. She made history-and is poised to do it again on the fiftieth anniversary of that initial race, when she will run the 2017 Boston Marathon at age 70. Now a spokesperson for Reebok, Switzer is also the founder of 261 Fearless, a foundation dedicated to creating opportunities for women on all fronts, as this groundbreaking sports hero has done throughout her life. "Kathrine Switzer is the Susan B. Anthony of women's marathoning."-Joan Benoit Samuelson, first Olympic gold medalist in the women's marathon
