Book Synopsis Two Men and Music by : Janaki Bakhle
Download or read book Two Men and Music written by Janaki Bakhle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative account of the development of modern national culture in India using classical music as a case study. Janaki Bakhle demonstrates how the emergence of an "Indian" cultural tradition reflected colonial and exclusionary practices, particularly the exclusion of Muslims by the Brahmanic elite, which occurred despite the fact that Muslims were the major practiti oners of the Indian music that was installed as a "Hindu" national tradition. This book lays bare how a nation's imaginings--from politics to culture--reflect rather than transform societal divisions.

Book Synopsis Singing the Classical, Voicing the Modern by : Amanda J. Weidman
Download or read book Singing the Classical, Voicing the Modern written by Amanda J. Weidman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Karnatic music, a form of Indian music based on the melodic principle of raga and time cycles called tala, is known today as South India’s classical music, its status as “classical” is an early-twentieth-century construct, one that emerged in the crucible of colonial modernity, nationalist ideology, and South Indian regional politics. As Amanda J. Weidman demonstrates, in order for Karnatic music to be considered classical music, it needed to be modeled on Western classical music, with its system of notation, composers, compositions, conservatories, and concerts. At the same time, it needed to remain distinctively Indian. Weidman argues that these contradictory imperatives led to the emergence of a particular “politics of voice,” in which the voice came to stand for authenticity and Indianness. Combining ethnographic observation derived from her experience as a student and performer of South Indian music with close readings of archival materials, Weidman traces the emergence of this politics of voice through compelling analyses of the relationship between vocal sound and instrumental imitation, conventions of performance and staging, the status of women as performers, debates about language and music, and the relationship between oral tradition and technologies of printing and sound reproduction. Through her sustained exploration of the way “voice” is elaborated as a trope of modern subjectivity, national identity, and cultural authenticity, Weidman provides a model for thinking about the voice in anthropological and historical terms. In so doing, she shows that modernity is characterized as much by particular ideas about orality, aurality, and the voice as it is by regimes of visuality.
Download or read book Us and Them written by John Robert Arnone and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Us and Them chronicles the depth to which Canada and Canadians were part of The Beatles’ story—their formation, growth and break up. Entertaining and well researched, Us and Them places John, Paul, George and Ringo as a band and as solo artists in a uniquely Canadian setting; it blends rich stories, facts, analysis, and even dabbles in several plausible but little known accounts that create a new ripple in The Beatles’ history. After consuming Us and Them, readers will never again listen to albums Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the White Album, or singles “Come Together”, “Give Peace a Chance”, “All Things Must Pass”, “Imagine” and “Mull of Kintyre” without thinking about these masterworks in a Canadian context. Us and Them is a thorough account of the Fab Four's relationship with Canada, filling an important gap in their narrative and discography.

Download or read book PRIMARY SOCIALISATION PATTERN written by Dr. Sheeba Khalid and published by Ashok Yakkaldevi. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialisation is the process by which the new born child is moulded into the culture of his group and there by becomes an accepted member of the society. In any particular culture, it is through the process of socialisation that the child acquires the attitudes and values of that culture and develops into an individual with culturally appropriate behaviours patterns. The life style that the individual adopts and his personality are largely a matter of the socialisation practices prevalent in a culture. As such, socialisation is a mechanism of culture transmission. But at the same time, it is also an aspect of the culture. The kind of child-rearing practices which are adopted by the parents are along the norms prevalent in the culture in which the child is born, and the roles that the child is expected to adopt and the pattern of his interactions with the adults and peers are also prescribed by the culture. There are four important agencies of socialisation of the children: the family, the peer group, the school and the community. Socialisation takes place not only at the early age of the child but also during the subsequent growth into youth and adulthood. In a sense it is continuous process.

The work is full of references; the footnotes refer to a variety of sources, legendary, inscriptional, numismatic, architectural and literary. The writer has exploited all the relevant material of the journals, catalogues, annals, reports and other documents in discussing the vexed problems of the date, place, genealogy of the authors and the literary tendencies of their compositions. His methodology of literary criticism is rationalistic and bears the stamp of the modern scientific age. The elaborate index, the critical introduction, the exhaustive bibliography, the list of abbreviations, the table of transliteration and a supplement are the most useful additions to this interesting and instructive work of literary history.
