Book excerpt: The 1st Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry, also known as Hampton's Cavalry Brigade, was organized June 25, 1862, using as its nucleus the 1st South Carolina Cavalry Battalion which had been organized October, 1861. Upon being mustered into Confederate service the First South Carolina Cavalry was assigned to duty in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It served that command until late 1862. Ordered north, the unit then saw service in the Army of Northern Virginia. It served in that Army until March 18, 1864. Returned to South Carolina, the regiment rejoined the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, serving in that command until the spring of 1865. It then joined the Army of Tennessee, serving in that Army for the duration of the War.Though the 1st Regiment was part of the surrender of the Army of Tennessee on April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina is was most likely not present. The Movie, "The Outlaw Josey Wells" staring Clint Eastwood, and the Book, "Manse" by Wilton Earle are based on the life of Manson, Sherrill Jolly, Sergeant in Company F of this regiment. During The Civil War, Manse Jolly served as a Confederate Scout in The Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland and Tennessee. But it was not until The War ended and he returned to his farm in the Anderson District of South Carolina that he became famous as a Hero of The Confederacy -- and Infamous as an Outlaw.MANSE is a story of struggle and intrigue, corruption and brutality, love and honor -- and one man's inexorable path from battlefield horrors to trauma induced madness. Get the true story here. Manse Jolly captures our hearts because he was not the son of a Plantation, and did not live off the backs of slaves. He was a small farmer with 400 acres, who worked hard, lived life, and saw it come crashing down when the Union armies came marching South. Manse Jolly lived his life and loved South Carolina. He defended it, and he honored his southern roots all of his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson's Wharf was the first major clash between U.S. Colored Troops and the Army of Northern Virginia. The 1st and 10th USCT infantry regiments, supported by two cannon and two U.S. Navy gunboats, faced 11 detachments of veteran Confederate cavalry who were under orders to "kill every man." Union commander General Edward Wild, a one-armed abolitionist, refused General Fitzhugh Lee's demand for surrender, telling Lee to "go to Hell." The battle resulted in a victory for the mainly black Union force. This book describes the action in detail and in the larger context of the history of black U.S. servicemen, including the British recruitment of runaway slaves during the Revolutionary War, the black Colonial Marines who joined the British in torching Washington in the War of 1812, and the South's attempts to enlist slaves in the final months of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Two excellent Confederate eyewitness accounts This special Leonaur edition contains two small works combined for good value and each written by a private soldier of the Confederate Army who fought in the American Civil War. The diminutive Frank Mixson, who quite literally ran away to enlist as a child at just fourteen years old, writes about his wartime experiences in the First South Carolina Volunteer Infantry regiment. He saw campaigning and action at Manassas, Sharpsburg, Chattanooga, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg and many other hard fought skirmishes and battles. His finely observed words bring a fresh perspective to the conflict and include details of many incidents as well as personal anecdotes. This is an excellent first-hand account that is all the more incredible because the author was still a juvenile as the war concluded. The second account here is shorter and unless accompanied by another work it may not have seen republication in modern times. The more mature John Gill decided from conviction to serve with those Marylanders who elected to join the cause of the southern states. Few in number, these troops were initially incorporated into the Virginian regiments. Following the theft of his horse prior to enlistment John Gill saw service in the infantry and later in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry and 1st. Maryland Battalion of Cavalry. Confederate accounts of the civil war are notably fewer than those from the Union Army and this book will be a valuable addition to any library of the American Civil War. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Preceding the famous 54th Massachusetts--seen in the film Glory--by one year, these South Carolina slaves turned soldiers were noted for their courage, discipline, and pride, continuing to serve the Union cause even while temporarily disbanded. They fought for years with little or no pay, poor equipment, and constant pressure and abuse from both North and South. This brief history is told mostly through the letters and journals of their commanding officer Lt. Col. Charles T. Trowbridge.

Book excerpt: "The first volume of a new series of books by Herbert O. Chambers, III containing biographies of South Carolinians who died serving the Confederate States of America. In addition to previously known South Carolina Civil War dead, this volume contains the names of approximately 562 South Carolina soldiers who died in the South Carolina artillery service but have never been listed before in any previous attempts to identify South Carolina's war dead. These additional soldiers do not appear in Broken Fortunes, the previous "bible" of South Carolina's war dead. And Were the Glory of Their Times -- Artillery is a comprehensive work including the names and stories of all the previously known soldiers as well as the new names. Herbert Chambers has researched extensively the South Carolina soldiers lost in the struggle for Southern independence. This series begins with the South Carolina Artillery and will be followed by the South Carolina Cavalry and finish with the South Carolina Infantry men who lost their lives during the Civil War. Combined sources of military service records, census records and family histories provide detailed information on these men."--http://www.broadfootpublishing.com/home.html
