Book excerpt: This thesis contains several investigations of magnetoelectric effects and ferroelectricity in complex oxides studied via first-principles calculations. We start by reviewing the mechanisms of ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric e ffects, and then we give a brief introduction to the first-principles computational methods that are involved. Next, our investigations are divided into two parts. The first half focuses on the magnetoelectric effects, while the second half is mainly on ferroelectricity. The first half aims to examine the lattice contribution to the magnetoelectricity by investigating the dynamical magnetic charge tensors induced by different mechanisms. Through the study of Cr2O3 and a fictitious material KITPite, we find that the dynamical magnetic charges driven by exchange striction are more significant than the ones induced by spin-orbit coupling. Since the lattice contribution to the magnetoelectric effect is proportional to the dynamical magnetic charges, we also study the magnetic charges and the magnetoelectric coupling in hexagonal manganite RMnO3 and ferrite RFeO3. Our results further confirm the importance of the exchange-striction mechanism in inducing large magnetic charges, but we also notice that the magnetoelectric contributions from various phonons tend to cancel each other, leading to a great reduction of the total coupling. These investigations not only provide a prediction of the magnetoelectric coupling constant in RMnO3 and RFeO3, but also emphasize the importance of phonons in magnetoelectric coupling. In the second half of the thesis, we focus on predicting new ferroelectrics in the family of corundum derivatives. Many new corundum derivatives have been synthesized recently; these are automatically polar, and many are magnetic as well. However, a polar material is only called ferroelectric if the polarization is reversible by an external field, and it is not yet clear whether or not this is the case for these new materials. Motivated by this question, we use a structural constraint method to study the ferroelectric reversal path and energy barrier of several corundum derivatives. As a result, we predict several FE candidates with insulting reversal paths and low barrier energies. Since the hysteresis behavior of ferroelectrics is attributed to the ferroelectric domain wall motion, we further investigate the formation and motion of ferroelectric domain walls in corundum derivatives. Our study predicts the atomic structure and orientation of the ferroelectric domain wall, as well as the shape of ferroelectric domains. In addition, we fi nd novel properties at domain walls, including a strong magnetoelectric coupling and an interlocking between chirality and polarization. Moreover, we use the structural constraint method to study the barrier energy of ferroelectric domain wall reversal. Our results suggest that the barrier energy is linearly correlated with the bond valence sum, which can be used as a guide to find new ferroelectrics in the family of corundum derivatives.

The focus is on epitaxial stabilization in perovskites and on magnetoelastic coupling and frustration in spinels. These materials and phenomena are of great interest for basic science and have important roles to play in the design and discovery of new functional materials. The effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO3 are investigated. Particular attention is paid to the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to the polar instability found in previous first-principles studies of calcium titanate in the ideal cubic perovskite structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the ab-ePbnm phase, favoured for compressive strains, and the c-ePbnm phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar instability, which was hidden in the equilibrium bulk structure, develops in the c-ePbnm phase and an epitaxial-strain-induced ferroelectric phase is obtained with polarization along a [110] direction with respect to the primitive perovskite lattice vectors of the square substrate. A ferroelectric rhombohedral R3c phase, with a different combination of octahedral rotations, is also found to be competitive in energy for large tensile strains, and might be observable under the application of additional perturbations, such as a small degree of cation substitution. We present an ongoing project to construct a first-principles effective Hamiltonian to investigate the transition from the high-temperature cubic phase to a low-temperature low-symmetry phase observed in the spinel structure oxides CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4. The local modes included in the expansion are the chromium displacements, distortions of the cadmium- or zinc-centred tetrahedra, and the homogeneous strain. The magnetostructural coupling of these degrees of freedom to the spins of the chromium ions is included in the effective Hamiltonian parametrization and first-principles determination using a symmetry analysis. The role of the magnetostructural coupling in the phase transition is analysed and discussed.

Complex oxides which have strongly correlated electrons are favorable candidates for materials industry, due to their rich phase diagrams and multiple functions. Especially, ferroelectric oxides is very promising materials in the industry for storage, due to their bistable polarization states triggered by external electrical field. This thesis is centered on ferroelectric oxides, analyzing their lattice structures and investigating the interface of ferroelectrics and other complex oxides to examine the potential of the heteostructures in the application in electronic devices. The most notable feature of ferroelectric oxides is their reversible spontaneous polarization, which is strongly related to the lattice distortion in the crystal. In chapter 2, we report a neutron diffraction study of NaNbO3 [sodium niobate], to comprehensively understand the origin of ferroelectricity. We find that the structure evolves six phases from 930K to 15K in long-range, while only three real ground states are detected at short-range. We then study the ferroelectric/manganites heterostructures and explore its potential in the application in field effect transistors and ferroelectric memories. In chapter 3, we first describe the insulator-to-metal phase transition is realized in La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 [strontium doped lanthanum titanate oxides] under the field-effect of the ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 [lead titanate oxides] layer. Moreover, we find that the interfacial transition plays a very crucial role in the tunneling electroresistance effect (TER) of the heterostructures. In chapter 4, we test the similar function at the interface of ferroelectrics and cuprates. We describe that the epitaxial strain and oxygen stoichiometry both lead to substantial changes in superconducting properties and these two factors are strongly coupled. And we demonstrate that the interface superconductivity is achieved in overdoped cuprates La1.6Sr0.4CuO4 [strontium doped lanthanum cuprate oxides] under field effect, with high Meissner volume and Tc̳ [superconducting transition temperature] around 15K. Therefore, our results provide deep understanding on ferroelectric materials and open more opportunities for their application.

Book excerpt: Multiferroic magnetoelectric (ME) materials, which simultaneously show ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering, have attracted a huge scientific attention due to both the intriguing fundamental importance and the great technological potential, as a result of the coupling between the dual ferroic orderings. However there are only a few single-phase multiferroic materials in nature and the performance is limited by the low ordering temperature, the small polarization/magnetization or the weak coupling efficiency. Another promising pathway to engineer ME coupling is through designing heterostructures. The current studies of ME coupling (electric field control of magnetism) in heterostructures can be divided into 3 routes: (1) Using piezoelectric effects to change the strain (lattice); (2) Using ferroelectric polarization to tune the carriers (charge); (3) Using multiferroic materials to manipulate the moments by magnetic coupling (spin). Previous studies of an all-oxide model heterostructure system that consists of the ferromagnet La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) and the BiFeO3 (BFO) reveals an interesting charge and spin interactions at the interface. Following the same route, the first part of the dissertation focuses on two different pathways to improve the ME coupling in manganite/BFO model system. Chapter 3 demonstrates that the ME coupling in LSMO/BFO is dramatically different by changing the atomic stack-ing sequence at the interface. In chapter 4, another model system La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO), which is at the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase boundary, is studied instead of LSMO to explore the limit within this route. The results complementarily suggest the importance of a more comprehensive design rule at the atomic scale in order to achieve a better ME coupling efficiency. Furthermore, although the coupling between the lattice, charge and spin has been intensively studied in terms of ME coupling, the orbital degree of freedom has been neglected so far. In principle, orbital is strongly coupled to lattice. Therefore a large ME coupling could be expected if a strong spin-orbit interaction could be established. The second part of the dissertation concentrates on pursuing this new ideal through two different pathways. Chapter 5 presents a systematic study of the in-situ strain effect on the magnetic and orbital orderings of a model system Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3. The results demonstrate the close correlation between the orbital ordering parameter and the strain. However the magnetic ordering parameter is less sensitive to strain in this system. With the implication from chapter 5, 5d transition metal oxide SrIrO3(SIO), which hosts a strong intrinsic spin-orbit coupling due to the large atomic number, is studied in chapter 6. Superlattice LSMO/SIO shows an interesting novel magnetic state with a large orbital momentum in the nominally paramagnetic SIO, which is likely to be a very promising candidate to engineer the ME coupling at the interface. In summary, our studies on engineering the ME effects in heterostructures have revealed two key implications: 1. in the traditional routes that have been extensively studied, further improvements are possible by carefully engineering the interface; 2. the coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom is likely to be another promising route to investigate the ME coupling in heterostructures.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to modeling and application of magnetoelectric (ME) effects in layered and bulk composites based on magnetostrictive and piezoelectric materials. Currently, numerous theoretical and experimental studies on ME composites are available but few on the development and research of instruments based on them. So far, only investigation of ME magnetic field sensors has been cited in the existing literature. However, these studies have finally resulted in the creation of low-frequency ME magnetic field sensors with parameters substantially exceeding the characteristics of Hall sensors. The book presents the authors’ many years of experience gained in ME composites and through creation of device models based on their studies. It describes low-frequency ME devices, such as current and position sensors and energy harvesters, and microwave ME devices, such as antennas, attenuators, filters, gyrators, and phase shifters.
