Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Symmetrical Beauty IT is requisite at the outset, to caution the reader against an error that many seem to have fallen into regarding my former works, namely, the supposition, that in attempting to define the laws of symmetry, upon'which the pr1mary beauty of form depends, and'which is the governing principle in ornamental design, I pretend to glve rules for that kind of beauty which genius alone can produce in works of high' art. But I make no such attempt - as well might it be said of the author of an elementary sclloq'l- book, that in attempting to instruct his young readers in the elements of their mother-tongue, he was pretending to teach them rules for, producing poetical conceptions and other creations of the imagination - as that I, in laying before my readers the first principlesfigsymmetry, am giving rules for the exercise of genius in the arts of design. My object has been, and still is, of a less aspiring, and more practical nature, and all that is attempted in this Treatise, is simply to convey as much instruction regarding the nature of symmetrical beauty and its application to art, as the humblest Work on English Grammar conveys regarding the primary elements of written language and their application to literatu1e, consequently it has no more to do With high art than the spelling-book has to' do with poetry. Book excerpt: As much of interest to mathematicians as it is to artists, as relevant to physics as to architecture, symmetry underlies almost every aspect of nature and our experience of the world. Illustrated with old engravings and original work by the author, this book moves from church windows and mirror reflections to the deepest ideas of hidden symmetries in physics and geometry, music and the arts, left- and right-handedness.

This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of human reason is one of the thorniest of mysteries in philosophy. The reason appears in many specific forms within general areas such as cognition, thinking, experiencing beauty, and moral judgment. These forms are “perfectly” known in philosophy, yet an unknown pattern has been noticed which shows us that they are all a variation of the same theme: truth is an identity relation between the “thought” and “reality”; justice is an identity relation between the given and the deserved; beauty is an identity relation as rhyme is an identity relation between the final sounds of words; rhythm is an identity relation between time intervals; symmetry is an identity relation between two halves; proportion is an identity relation between two ratios; anaphora is an identity relation between the initial words. Particular things are identities in themselves and universals are identities between particulars. One idea associates another idea identical to it; an analogy is an identity between relations; induction is an identification between the known and unknown instances; and all the logic rests on the law of identity. What is common for all of them is the nature of reason itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book describes the fundamental principles and various aspects of classical architecture, including a detailed, illustrated glossary that is almost a dictionary of classical architecture in itself. Professor James Stevens Curl discusses in clear, straightforward language the origins of classical architecture in Greek and Roman antiquity and outlines its continuous development, through its various manifestations during the Renaissance, its transformations in Baroque and Rococo phases, its reemergence in eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Neoclassicism, and its survival into the modern era. The text and illustrations celebrate the richness of the classical architectural vocabulary, grammar, and language, and demonstrate the enormous range of themes and motifs found in the subject. All those who wish to look at buildings old and new with an informed eye will find in this book a rich fund of material, and the basis for an understanding of a fecund source of architectural design that has been at the heart of western culture for over two and a half millennia.

Book excerpt: In a culmination of humanity's millenia-long quest for self knowledge, the sciences of the mind are now in a position to offer concrete, validated answers to the most fundamental questions about human nature. By analyzing the tasks facing any sentient being that is subject to stimulation and a pressure to act, Shimon Edelman identifies computation as the common denominator in the emerging answers to all these questions. The account given in this book is accessible, yet unified and rigorous, and the big picture he presents is supported by evidence ranging from neurobiology to computer science. This book should be read by anyone seeking a comprehensive introduction to cognitive psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is design intuitive or is it consciously and methodically worked out? Are there basic rules governing design that, when learned, will facilitate the creative process? These questions have been asked by artists, art historians, and art critics throughout the ages. Convinced that design was not purely instinctive, Jay Hambidge (1867–1924) spent much of his life searching for the technical bases of design. He found his answer in dynamic symmetry, one of the most provocative and stimulating theories in art history. Hambidge's study of Greek art convinced him that the secret of the beauty of Greek design was in the conscious use of dynamic symmetry — the law of natural design based upon the symmetry of growth in man and in plants. But Hambidge, who was not only a theoretician but also a practicing artist, did much more than analyze classical art and its principles of design: he worked out a series of root rectangles that the artist, using the simple mathematics supplied in this book, can easily follow and apply in his own work. Originally published as a series of lessons in Hambidge's magazine, The Diagonal, this engrossing book explains all the basic principles of dynamic symmetry. Part I sets forth the fundamental rectangles with their simple divisions based on the proportioning law found in nature; Part II explains compound rectangles, many of which were taken from or suggested by analysis of objects of Greek art. Whether read for its historical importance in art theory, for its illuminating insights into Greek art, or for its practical value to today's artists and commercial designers, The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry has much to offer anyone who is interested in the principle of design.
