Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy The successive French editions of the work have undergone numerous and important changes, - changes not so much in the general scope and spirit of the book as in the manner of presenting certain sections of the subject. The fundamental purpose has remained precisely the same: to give the reader a plain statement of the accepted principles of economics a summary of the unsettled problems of the science, and a clear, brief, and impartial outline of the various solutions that have been proposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unto This Last: Four Essays on the First Principles of Political Economy The four following essays were published eighteen months ago in the Cornhill Magazine, and were reprobated in a violent manner, as far as I could hear, by most of the readers they met with. Not a whit the less, I believe them to be the best, that is to say, the truest, rightest-worded, and most serviceable things I have ever written; and the last of them, having had especial pains spent on it, is probably the best I shall ever write. "This," the reader may reply, "it might be, yet not therefore well written." Which, in no mock humility, admitting, I yet rest satisfied with the work, though with nothing else that I have done; and purposing shortly to follow out the subjects opened in these papers, as I may find leisure, I wish the introductory statements to be within the reach of any one who may care to refer to them. So I republish the essays as they appeared. One word only is changed, correcting the estimate of a weight; and no word is added. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy: Applied to the Condition, the Resources, and the Institutions of the American People The work was not designed to be wholly controversial and original; besides suggesting the doctrines which are to take the place of those which have been rejected, it was intended to contain a summary of what is most valuable in other treatises upon the subject, so as to form a con venient text-book of instruction in American colleges. Most teachers will probably accept the conclusion which I have formed, after many years' experience, that it is a wearisome and hopeless task to at tempt to instruct a class Of pupils from any Of the English or French treatises upon the science. This volume contains the substance of a course of lectures upon Political Economy, first delivered before the Lowell Institute in Boston five years ago, and afterwards repeated, with many changes and additions, before successive classes in college. It also comprises all that was deemed worthy of preservation in a series of articles upon various topics in the science, which have been published during the last ten years in the North American Review. I have not deemed it necessary to rewrite what was at first carefully prepared for publication, when time and further reflection had not suggested any change of doctrine, or any material improvements in illustration or phraseology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Principles of Political Economy in a New and Practical Form: A Book The aim of this book is to give, in small compass, a sufficient view of economic doctrine for the ordinary needs of intelligent citizens. I have had two principal motives in writing it. In the first place, I wished to show that the principles of Political Economy may be developed in such a form as to bring out, more clearly than is done in the standard books, their close and vital connection with every - day industry. In the second place, I wished to suggest some modifications, chiefly in points of detail, of the conclusions commonly accepted hitherto by the leading economists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Leading: Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded Though the following work is an attempt to recast some considerable portion of Political Economy, I should be sorry it were regarded as in any sense antagonistic in its attitude toward the science built up by the labors of Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and Mill. On the contrary, my hope is that it will - should its reasonings find acceptance - strengthen, in some sensible degree, and add consistence to that fabric. As regards those assumptions respecting human character and the physical conditions of external nature which constitute the ultimate premises of economic science, the position I have taken is identical with that of the four great writers I have named; and I have endeavored also to follow the method of combined deduction and verification by comparison with facts, which was theirs, and which is, as I believe, the only fruitful, or indeed possible method in economic inquiry. Nor do the final conclusions which I have reached differ very widely on any important points from those at which they had arrived. The points on which I have ventured to join issue with them are what, in Bacon's language, may be called the axiomata media of the science - those intermediate principles by means of which the detailed results are connected with the higher causes which produce them. If I have not deceived myself, there is in this portion of Political Economy, as at present generally received, no small proportion of faulty material; and the present work may be regarded as an attempt, so far as it goes, to replace this element of weakness with matter better fitted to endure the strain of modern criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles Polit Political Economy: Concisely Presented for the Use of Classes in High Schools and Academies From several quarters, there came a call for a concise compend of the principles of Political Economy, which could be used as a text-book for advanced classes in high schools and academies. In this little book, the author has attempted to respond to that call. He has not tried to make a book for children, nor to make the science easy for youth of more maturity; but he has endeavored simply and clearly, in as few words as possi ble, to present the subject for the study of persons who have learned something of the power of language, and have been trained to think and reason for themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can national growth be sustained indefinitely? How much should government intervene in a competitive market economy? The questions John Stuart Mill raised a century and a half ago, in 1848's Principles of Political Economy, and the answers he found, are just as critical-and just as contentiously debated-today. Through a lens of what the philosopher himself termed "philosophical radicalism"-and what some today call "democratic liberalism"-Mill takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and other influential works of political thought of his time, and recasts them from a more scientific viewpoint, suggesting that such realities as the unequal distribution of wealth were not "natural" but rather a matter of human choice... choices we continue to have to make in our ever more complicated economy. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Selected Writings of John Stuart Mill and On Liberty. English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) was one of the foremost figure of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century. He served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are On Liberty (1859), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).
