Book excerpt: By combining density functional theory and linear response theory, the normal mode frequencies of lattice vibration---phonons---are calculated from first-principles. Corresponding to the original Kohn-Sham equation with an external perturbation, the perturbed Kohn-Sham equation is solved self-consistently to give the variations in the density and the effective potential to linear order of the external perturbation. From these results, the dynamical matrices are calculated, and the phonon frequencies are obtained through direct diagonalization of the dynamical matrix.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Physics of Electrons in Solids by : Henri Alloul
Download or read book Introduction to the Physics of Electrons in Solids written by Henri Alloul and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook sets out to enable readers to understand fundamental aspects underlying quantum macroscopic phenomena in solids, primarily through the modern experimental techniques and results. The classic independent-electrons approach for describing the electronic structure in terms of energy bands helps explain the occurrence of metals, insulators and semiconductors. It is underlined that superconductivity and magnetism can only be understood by taking into account the interactions between electrons. The text recounts the experimental observations that have revealed the main properties of the superconductors and were essential to track its physical origin. While fundamental concepts are underlined, those which are required to describe the high technology applications, present or future, are emphasized as well. Problem sets involve experimental approaches and tools which support a practical understanding of the materials and their behaviour.

Book Synopsis Optical Diagnostics for Thin Film Processing by : Irving P. Herman
Download or read book Optical Diagnostics for Thin Film Processing written by Irving P. Herman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-10-23 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the increasing role of in situ optical diagnostics in thin film processing for applications ranging from fundamental science studies to process development to control during manufacturing. The key advantage of optical diagnostics in these applications is that they are usually noninvasive and nonintrusive. Optical probes of the surface, film, wafer, and gas above the wafer are described for many processes, including plasma etching, MBE, MOCVD, and rapid thermal processing. For each optical technique, the underlying principles are presented, modes of experimental implementation are described, and applications of the diagnostic in thin film processing are analyzed, with examples drawn from microelectronics and optoelectronics. Special attention is paid to real-time probing of the surface, to the noninvasive measurement of temperature, and to the use of optical probes for process control. Optical Diagnostics for Thin Film Processing is unique. No other volume explores the real-time application of optical techniques in all modes of thin film processing. The text can be used by students and those new to the topic as an introduction and review of the subject. It also serves as a comprehensive resource for engineers, technicians, researchers, and scientists already working in the field. - The only volume that comprehensively explores in situ, real-time, optical probes for all types of thin film processing - Useful as an introduction to the subject or as a resource handbook - Covers a wide range of thin film processes including plasma etching, MBE, MOCVD, and rapid thermal processing - Examples emphasize applications in microelectronics and optoelectronics - Introductory chapter serves as a guide to all optical diagnostics and their applications - Each chapter presents the underlying principles, experimental implementation, and applications for a specific optical diagnostic

Book Synopsis Spectroscopy of Complex Oxide Interfaces by : Claudia Cancellieri
Download or read book Spectroscopy of Complex Oxide Interfaces written by Claudia Cancellieri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the most recent and compelling experimental results for complex oxide interfaces. The results of this book were obtained with the cutting-edge photoemission technique at highest energy resolution. Due to their fascinating properties for new-generation electronic devices and the challenge of investigating buried regions, the book chiefly focuses on complex oxide interfaces. The crucial feature of exploring buried interfaces is the use of soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) operating on the energy range of a few hundred eV to increase the photoelectron mean free path, enabling the photons to penetrate through the top layers – in contrast to conventional ultraviolet (UV)-ARPES techniques. The results presented here, achieved by different research groups around the world, are summarized in a clearly structured way and discussed in comparison with other photoemission spectroscopy techniques and other oxide materials. They are complemented and supported by the most recent theoretical calculations as well as results of complementary experimental techniques including electron transport and inelastic resonant X-ray scattering.
Book Synopsis Advanced Computing in Electron Microscopy by : Earl J. Kirkland
Download or read book Advanced Computing in Electron Microscopy written by Earl J. Kirkland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and revised edition of a classic work provides a summary of methods for numerical computation of high resolution conventional and scanning transmission electron microscope images. At the limits of resolution, image artifacts due to the instrument and the specimen interaction can complicate image interpretation. Image calculations can help the user to interpret and understand high resolution information in recorded electron micrographs. The book contains expanded sections on aberration correction, including a detailed discussion of higher order (multipole) aberrations and their effect on high resolution imaging, new imaging modes such as ABF (annular bright field), and the latest developments in parallel processing using GPUs (graphic processing units), as well as updated references. Beginning and experienced users at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level will find the book to be a unique and essential guide to the theory and methods of computation in electron microscopy.
