Book excerpt: A study of B-meson decays to final states with a single charm baryon is presented based on data recorded by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Although the B meson is the lightest bottom-flavored meson, it is heavy enough to decay to a baryon made of three quarks and an antibaryon made of three antiquarks. By studying the baryonic weak decays of the B meson, we can investigate baryon production mechanisms in heavy meson decays. In particular, we measure the rates of the decays B- → [Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$[pi]- and $\bar{B}$0 → [Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$. Comparing these rates, we confirm an observed trend in baryonic B decays that the decay with the lower energy release, B- → [Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$[pi]-, is favored over $\bar{B}$0 → [Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$. The dynamics of the baryon-antibaryon ([Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$) system in the three-body decay also provide insight into baryon-antibaryon production mechanisms. The B- → [Lambda]+c$\bar{p}$[pi]- system is a laboratory for searches for excited #c baryon states; we observe the resonant decays B- → [Sigma]c(2455) 0$\bar{p}$ and B- → [Sigma]c(2800) 0$\bar{p}$. This is the first observation of the decay B- → [Sigma]c(2800) 0$\bar{p}$; however, the mass of the observed #c(2800)0 state is inconsistent with previous measurements. Finally, we examine the angular distribution of the B- → [Sigma]c(2455) 0$\bar{p}$ decays and measure the spin of the B- → [Sigma]c(2455) 0$\bar{p}$ baryon to be J = 1/2, as predicted by the quark model.

Book excerpt: The neutral B meson, consisting of a b quark and an anti-d quark, can mix (oscillate) to its own anti-particle through second-order weak interactions. The measurement of the mixing frequency can constrain the quark mixing matrix in the Standard Model of particle physics. The PEP-II B-factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center provides a very large data sample that enables us to make measurements with much higher precisions than previous measurements, and to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The lifetime of the neutral B meson[tau][sub B0] and the B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] mixing frequency[Delta]m[sub d] are measured with a sample of approximately 14,000 exclusively reconstructed B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -][ell][sup+][nu][sub[ell]] signal events, selected from 23 million B[bar B] pairs recorded at the[Upsilon](4S)resonance with the BABAR detector at the asymmetric-energy e[sup+]e[sup -] collider, PEP-II. The decay position of the exclusively reconstructed B is determined by the charged tracks in the final state, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is known unambiguously from the charge of the lepton. The decay position of the other B is determined inclusively, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is determined (tagged) with the charge of tracks in the final state, where identified leptons or kaons give the most information. The decay time difference of two B mesons in the event is calculated from the distance between their decay vertices and the Lorentz boost of the center of mass. Additional samples of approximately 50,000 events are selected for studies of background events. The lifetime and mixing frequency, along with wrong-tag probabilities and the time-difference resolution function, are measured simultaneously with an unbinned maximum-likelihood fit that uses, for each event, the measured difference in B decay times ([Delta]t), the calculated uncertainty on[Delta]t, the signal and background probabilities, and b-quark tagging for the other B meson. The results are[tau][sub B[sup 0]]= (1.523[sub -0.023][sup+0.024][+-] 0.022) ps and[Delta]m[sub d]= (0.492[+-] 0.018[+-] 0.013) ps[sup -1], where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical correlation coefficient between[tau][sub B[sup 0]] and[Delta]m[sub d] is -0.22. This result is consistent with the current world average values, the total errors are comparable with other most-precise measurements.

Book excerpt: We report on the first observation of the bottom-charm mesons B[sub c] through the decay mode B[sub c][sup[+-]][yields] J/[psi]l[sup[+-]][nu] in 1.8 TeV p[anti p] collisions using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A fit of background and signal contributions to the observed J/[psi]l mass distribution yielded 20.4[sup+6.2][sub -5.5] events from B[sub c] mesons. A fit to the same distribution with background alone was rejected at the level of 4.8 standard deviations. We measured the B[sub c][sup+] mass to be 6.40[+-]0.39[+-]0.13 GeV/c[sup 2] and the B[sub c][sup+] lifetime to be 0.46[sup 0.18][sub -0.16](stat.)[+-]0.03(syst.) ps. The measured production cross section times branching ratio for B[sub c][sup+][yields] J/[psi]l[sup+][nu] relative to that for B[sup+][yields] J/[psi]K[sup+] is 0.132[sup 0.041][sub -0.037](stat.)[+-]0.031(syst.)[sup+0.032][sub -0.020](lifetime).

These searches use the full dataset collected by the BaBar experiment, which corresponds to almost 500 million BB pairs. After fully reconstructing the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in Upsilon(4S) -> BB decays, evidence of B+ -> l+ nu gamma or B -> K(*) nu nubar is looked for in the rest of the event. No significant evidence of either signal decay is observed. Model-independent branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B ->e nu gamma)17 x10 {-6}, BR(B -mu nu gamma)24 x10 {-6}, and BR(B -l nu gamma)15.6 x10 {-6}, all at the 90% confidence level. These are currently the most stringent published upper limits for B+ - l+ nu gamma. In addition, branching-fraction upper limits are set at BR(B -> K+ nu nubar)3.7 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K0 nu nubar)8.0 x10 {-5}, BR(B - K*+ nu nubar)11.5 x10 {-5}, and BR(B - K*0 nu nubar)9.2 x10 {-5}, all at the 90% confidence level. For additional sensitivity to New Physics contributions, partial B - K(*) nu nubar branching-fraction upper limits are also determined over the full kinematic range." --

The study of the branching fractions and angular distributions of B meson decays to hadronic final states without a charm quark probes the dynamics of both the weak and strong interactions, and plays an important role in understanding CP Violation (CPV) in the quark sector. CP Violation at the B factories is described graphically by a triangle with sides formed from the CKM matrix elements V{sub qd}V*{sub qb} (q = u, c, t) and internal angles [alpha], [beta] [gamma] (or [phi]2, [phi]1, [phi]3). Discrepancies in the measured values of the sides and angles could be an indication of New Physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) due to enhanced branching fractions or modified CP asymmetries. The experimental measurements of branching fractions, CP asymmetries, polarization and phases (both weak and strong) can be compared to theoretical models based on, for example, QCD factorization, SU(3) symmetry and Lattice QCD.

They observe a significant enhancement at the low K{bar K}* invariant mass which is interpreted as B 2K, find evidence for the decay B+ 2K+, and place upper limits on the decays B+ 2K+, B+ 2!f1(1285)K+, B+ 2!f1(1420)K+, and B+ 2K+.
