Book Synopsis Literacy and Globalization by : Uta Papen
Download or read book Literacy and Globalization written by Uta Papen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using literacy practices in the newly independent post-apartheid Namibia as a lens through which to examine the effects of globalisation, this broad case study looks at issues surrounding tourism, state control and the new forces of consumerism. By placing literacy at the centre of an investigation into social and cultural change as experienced by individuals, Papen shows that in times of change, reading and writing are always implicated in structures of power and inequality. The book considers language practices that can exclude some members of Namibian society and also looks at the strategies used by local people to accommodate and even embrace the onward march of global English and the influx of foreign visitors, practices and modes of commerce and interaction.
Book Synopsis The Policy Paradox in Africa by : Elias Ayuk
Download or read book The Policy Paradox in Africa written by Elias Ayuk and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2007 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It provided technical and financial support to economic research centres in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) so that they can undertake policy-relevant research with the goal of influencing economic policy-making. In January 2005, the Secretariat organized an international conference in Dakar, Senegal, during which participants from key economic think tanks presented their experiences in the policy development process in Africa. Of particular interest was the role of economic research and economic researchers in policy-making. The authors examine the extent to which economic policies that are formulated in the sub-continent draw from research based on local realities and undertaken by local researchers and research networks in Africa.
Book Synopsis Understanding Namibia by : Henning Melber
Download or read book Understanding Namibia written by Henning Melber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since independence in 1990, Namibia has witnessed only one generation with no memory of colonialism - the 'born frees', who voted in the 2009 elections. The anti-colonial liberation movement, SWAPO, dominates the political scene, effectively making Namibia a de facto one-party state dominated by the first 'struggle generation'. While those in power declare their support for a free, fair, and just society, the limits to liberation are such that emancipation from foreign rule has only been partially achieved. Despite its natural resources Namibia is among the world's most unequal societies and indicators of wellbeing have not markedly improved for many among the former colonized majority, despite a constitution enshrining human rights, social equality, and individual liberty. This book analyses the transformation of Namibian society since Independence. Melber explores the achievements and failures and contrasts the narrative of a post-colonial patriotic history with the socio-economic and political realities of the nation-building project. He also investigates whether, notwithstanding the relative stability prevailing to date, the negotiation of controlled change during Namibia's decolonization could have achieved more than simply a change of those in control.
Book Synopsis Imagining the Post-Apartheid State by : John T. Friedman
Download or read book Imagining the Post-Apartheid State written by John T. Friedman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In northwest Namibia, people’s political imagination offers a powerful insight into the post-apartheid state. Based on extensive anthropological fieldwork, this book focuses on the former South African apartheid regime and the present democratic government; it compares the perceptions and practices of state and customary forms of judicial administration, reflects upon the historical trajectory of a chieftaincy dispute in relation to the rooting of state power and examines everyday forms of belonging in the independent Namibian State. By elucidating the State through a focus on the social, historical and cultural processes that help constitute it, this study helps chart new territory for anthropology, and it contributes an ethnographic perspective to a wider set of interdisciplinary debates on the State and state processes.

Book Synopsis The Sustainable City VIII (2 Volume Set) by : S.S. Zubir
Download or read book The Sustainable City VIII (2 Volume Set) written by S.S. Zubir and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 1429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With majority of the Earth’s people now urban dwellers, and cities being the most efficient habitat for the utilisation of resources, it is imperative that we continue to support standards of living and efficiencies of urban areas. However, the urbanisation process has not been without its problems. While much has been done to address the original issues surrounding the quality of urban life, new challenges continue to arise. It is no longer sustainable to achieve improvements by means that require greater and greater energy consumption as we did in the past. Despite their complexity, however, cities are a great laboratory for architects, engineers, and other key professionals to apply new ideas and new technology to meet our requirements for more sustainable city environments. Containing papers presented at the latest in a series of conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, these proceedings, split in to two volumes address not just environmental, architectural, and engineering concerns, but also quality of life, security, risk, and heritage. The diversity of topics and the case studies based on existing projects make the book an important contribution to the literature on urban planning.
