Book excerpt: "We present a measurement of charge asymmetry in the production of top and antitop quark pairs in proton-proton collisions, in a sample of 19:6 fb−1 of data collected by the CMS experiment at 8TeV center of mass energy in 2012. Selected events have a single isolated electron or muon, and at least four jets, at least one of which is likely due to a bottom quark. A template technique is employed to measure top-antitop asymmetry in two kinematic observables simultaneously, which allows attribution of contributions to the observed forward-central asymmetry from distinct Standard Model production mechanisms. An asymmetry Ayc = (0:15 ± 0:42)% is measured in the difference of absolute rapidities of top-antitop pairs, of which (0:00 ± 0:43)% is attributable to quark-antiquark initial states, and (0:18 ± 0:15)% is attributable to quark-gluon initial states. The first measurement of the transverse top quark charge asymmetry is also presented, with the result A[phi]c = (0:44 ± 0:50)%. Measurements of the inclusive asymmetry on selections with high and low top system mass and absolute rapidity are consistent with the main result. The results are compared to Standard Model predictions and measurements from the LHC and the Tevatron"--Page vii.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the top-antitop quark pair production charge asymmetry in the dilepton channel, characterized by two high-pT leptons (electrons or muons), are presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb–1 from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Inclusive and differential measurements as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum, and longitudinal boost of the tt¯ system are performed both in the full phase space and in a fiducial phase space closely matching the detector acceptance. Two observables are studied: AllC based on the selected leptons and Att¯C based on the reconstructed tt¯ final state. As a result, the inclusive asymmetries are measured in the full phase space to be AllC=0.008±0.006 and Att¯C=0.021±0.016, which are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of AllC=0.0064±0.0003 and Att¯C=0.0111±0.0004.

A template technique is used to measure the asymmetry in the distribution of differences in the top quark and antiquark absolute rapidities. The measured asymmetry is Ayc= [0.33_0.26 (stat)_0.33 (syst)]%, which is the most precise result to date. The results are compared to calculations based on the standard model and on several beyond-the-standard-model scenarios.

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.09 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Top-quark pairs are selected in the final state with an electron or muon and four or more jets. At least one jet is identified as originating from b-quark hadronization. The charge asymmetry is measured in two variables, one based on the pseudorapidities ([eta]) of the top quarks and the other on their rapidities (y). The results A{sub C}{sup {eta}} = -0.017 ± 0.032(stat.){sub -0.036}{sup +0.025}(syst.) and A{sub C}{sup y} = -0.013 ± 0.028(stat.){sub -0.031}{sup +0.029}(syst.) are consistent within uncertainties with the standard-model predictions.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A measurement of the energy asymmetry in jet-associated top-quark pair production is presented using 139fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during pp collisions at s√=13TeV . The observable measures the different probability of top and antitop quarks to have the higher energy as a function of the jet scattering angle with respect to the beam axis. The energy asymmetry is measured in the semileptonic tt ̄ decay channel, and the hadronically decaying top quark must have transverse momentum above 350GeV . The results are corrected for detector effects to particle level in three bins of the scattering angle of the associated jet. The measurement agrees with the SM prediction at next-to-leading-order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics in all three bins. In the bin with the largest expected asymmetry, where the jet is emitted perpendicular to the beam, the energy asymmetry is measured to be −0.043±0.020 , in agreement with the SM prediction of −0.037±0.003 . Interpreting this result in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), it is shown that the energy asymmetry is sensitive to the top-quark chirality in four-quark operators and is therefore a valuable new observable in global SMEFT fits

Book excerpt: The Fermi National Laboratory (Fermilab) operates the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, the is therefore the only collider which is today able to produce the heaviest known particle, the top quark. The top quark was discovered at the Tevatron by the CDF and D0 collaborations in 1995. At the Tevatron, most top quarks are produced via the strong interaction, whereby quark-antiquark annihilation dominates with 85%, and gluon fusion contributes with 15%. Considering next-to-leading order (NLO) contributions in the cross section of top-antitop quark production, leads to a slight positive asymmetry in the differential distribution of the production angle {alpha} of the top quarks. This asymmetry is due to the interference of certain NLO contributions. The charge asymmetry A in the cosine of {alpha} is predicted [14] to amount to 4-6%. Information about the partonic rest frame, necessary for a measurement of A in the observable cos {alpha}, is not accessible in the experiment. Thus, they use the rapidity difference of the top and the antitop quark as sensitive variable. This quantity offers the advantage of Lorentz invariance and is uniquely correlated with the cosine of {alpha}, justifying the choice of the rapidity difference to describe the behavior of cos {alpha}. In preparation for a measurement of the charge asymmetry, they conduct several Monte Carlo based studies concerning the effect of different event selection criteria on the asymmetry in the selected event samples. They observe a strong dependence of the measured asymmetry on the number of required jets in the particular event sample. This motivates further studies to understand the influence of additional gluon radiation, which leads to more than four observed jets in an event, on the rapidity distribution of the produced top quarks. They find, that events containing hard gluon radiation are correlated with a strong negative shift of the rapidity distribution of the top quarks. This leads to large negative values of the charge asymmetry in event samples that contain only events with exactly five, six or more jets. This finding requires a modification of the original analysis strategy, since an asymmetry measured in an inclusive sample will be a composition of the asymmetry in the four-jets and five-jets sub-samples. Therefore, they perform for the first time a measurement of the asymmetry separately in the exclusive four- and five-jets sub-samples to separate the contribution of hard gluon radiation to the asymmetry. They analyze a data sample, collected by the CDF II detector in the years 2002-2006, that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 955 pb{sup -1}.

It starts with two introductory chapters on group theory and the Dirac theory. Then it proceeds with the formulation of the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics, particle content and symmetries, fully exploiting the material of the first two chapters. It discusses the concept of gauge symmetries and emphasizes their role in particle physics. It then analyses the Higgs mechanism and the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). It explains how the particles (gauge bosons and fermions) after the SSB acquire a mass and get admixed. The various forms of the charged currents are discussed in detail as well as how the parameters of the SM, which cannot be determined by the theory, are fixed by experiment, including the recent LHC data and the Higgs discovery. Quantum chromodynamics is discussed and various low energy approximations to it are presented. The Feynman diagrams are introduced and applied, at the level of first year graduate students. Examples are the evaluation of the decay widths of the gauge bosons and some cross sections for interesting processes such as Rutherford scattering, electron-proton scattering (elementary proton or described by a form factor, and inelastic scattering) and Compton scattering. After that the classic topics like the role of C, P, CP symmetries and the experimental methods needed to verify their conservation or violation are discussed in some detail. Topics beyond the standard model, like supersymmetry for pedestrians and grand unification, are discussed. To this end neutrino oscillations, dark matter and baryon asymmetry are also briefly discussed at the first year graduate level. Finally, the book contains an exhibition of recent developments in cosmology, especially from the elementary particle point of view.
