Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Physics IN preparing this book, particular attention has been given to the choice of subject-matter and the method of presentation. The pupil's point of view has been carefully considered, and facts which are common in his daily experience have been used in explaining the vari ous principles. The explanations themselves have been made with a care which should render them unusually clear and simple. Throughout the text, the author has sought to emphasize the simplicity and reduce the complexity of the subjects, and the pupil is constantly induced to think. In this way he will study to know, which is better than to remember. The use of words has received thoughtful attention; words of special meaning are sometimes explained in the text, and many which are not thus interpreted may be found in the appended glossary. No course in laboratory work is required. Some sim ple experiments are described in the text from time to time, and wherever practicable these experiments could be performed at the teacher's discretion. Should a more extended course of laboratory practice be desired, there are many inexpensive manuals, any one of which may conveniently be used in connection with this text-book. Many times every day we make use of some of its principles. All the motions of our bodies, whether in work or play, are made in accordance with these principles. The act of throwing a ball, running, skating, rowing, climbing a tree, swinging, falling, and so on, are all acts which may be explained by the principles and laws treated of in physics. All bodies fall to the earth; water runs down hill winds blow and the earth revolves about the sun. These are all problems in physics. Then there are a great number of machines which man uses in doing his work. The plough, wagon, locomotive, lathe, hammer, saw, wind wheels, water-wheels, sail-boats, steam-ships. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physics The following Lessons have been growing into their present form for several years, during which time they have been used in classes under the supervision of the author. Within the past year they have been revised, with the aim of adapting them to general use. It is confidently hoped that these Lessons will meet a want which is being increasingly felt by teachers and school officers for a suitable text-book to aid them in training the pupils of the upper grammar and lower high school grades to observe, to think, and to express thought, and in revealing to them some of the laws in accordance with which physical changes occur. It has been the author's aim to guide the investigations of the learner by directions and questions so definite that he will generally be able to get the points desired without aid. Occasionally a question is asked which only a small proportion of the class may be able to answer; but the question should at least secure the attention of all, and prepare them to grasp the truth when it comes; and the closer workers will get the exercise which they need. The author believes that in early lessons it is inadvisable to trouble the student either with theories, or with the generalisations that prove such a valuable aid to the advanced student little space has therefore been devoted to theoretical considerations. Experience as a teacher suggests that a careful examination of the facts of science is the first duty of a beginner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physics: Mechanics (Including Hydrostatics) And Light Some years ago a body of educational leaders declared themselves in favor of teaching physics by means of experiments involving exact measurement and weighing by the pupils in grammar-schools. To the author of this book, well aware of the difficulty of establishing and maintaining a thorough course of quantitative experimental work in academics and high schools, the new proposition did not at first commend itself. Difficulties of various kinds, financial, mechanical, pedagogical, appeared in the way. Indeed, the author at first expressed, somewhat publicly, the opinion that grammar-school physics must be lecture-table physics, an hour or two a week devoted by the teacher to the performance and discussion of simple experiments in the presence of the pupils. He thought, and still thinks, that such a course would be not unprofitable. There are several books describing this kind of work, and their number is rapidly increasing. But the advocates of the lecture-table method of science-teaching cannot claim for it the disciplinary advantage and the power of bringing the pupil into close quarters with physical facts and laws, that belong to a properly-conducted course of laboratory work by the pupils themselves. Imagine the drop divided into two drops, each Of these into two drops, each of these into two drops, and so on indefinitely. By and by, long after the particles are too small for the eye to see, even when aided by the most powerful microscope, the smallest possible particle of water would be obtained. This particle is called a molecule. By a chemical process the water molecule can be subdivided into three parts, - two of hydrogen and one of oxygen. These particles of hydrogen and oxygen are called atoms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Physics The conviction that an elementary knowledge of some important instruments, machines and physical phenomena can and should be given in our Common Schools, has induced the author to prepare the present little volume. Its object is the presentation of a number of phenomena, laws, and applications of the same, specially adapted to the perceptive capacities of the pupils of the upper grades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work.
