Book excerpt: This Letter describes the first determination 1 of bounds on the CP-violation parameter 2[beta]{sub s} using B{sub s}° decays in which the flavor of the bottom meson at production is identified. The result is based on approximately 2, 000 B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays reconstructed in a 1.35 fb−1 data sample collected with the CDFII detector using p{bar p} collisions produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of 2[beta]{sub s} and the decay-width difference [Delta][Lambda]. Assuming the standard model predictions of 2[beta]{sub s} and [Delta][Lambda], the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 15%, corresponding to 1.5 Gaussian standard deviations.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we present the results of a time-dependent angular analysis of B{sub s} → J/[psi][phi] decays performed with the use of initial-state flavor tagging. CP violation is observed in this mode through the interference of decay without net mixing and decay with net mixing, that is, B{sub s} → J/[psi][phi] and B{sub s} → {bar B}{sub s} → J/[psi][phi]. The time-dependent angular analysis is used to extract the decay widths of the heavy and light B{sub s} eigenstates and the difference between these decay widths [Delta][Lambda]{sub s} {triple_bond} [Lambda]{sub s}{sup L}-[Lambda]{sub s}{sup H}. Initial-state flavor tagging is used to determine the matter-antimatter content of the B{sub s} mesons at production time. We combine flavor tagging with the angular analysis, which statistically determines the contributions of the CP-even and CP-odd components at decay time, to measure the CP-violating phase [beta]{sub s}. The phase [beta]{sub s} is expressed in terms of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix as [beta]{sub s} {triple_bond} arg (-V{sub ts}V*{sub tb}/V{sub cs}V*{sub cb}), and is predicted by the Standard Model to be close to zero, [beta]{sub s}{sup SM} = 0.02. In the measurement of [Delta][Lambda]{sub s}, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.7 fb−1 of luminosity, collected at the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. In the measurement of [beta]{sub s}, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.3 fb−1 of collected luminosity. We measure [Delta][Lambda]{sub s} = (0.071{sub -0.059}{sup +0.064} ± 0.007) ps−1 using the time-dependent angular analysis. Combining the angular analysis with flavor-tagging, we find that assuming the Standard Model predictions of [beta]{sub s} and [Delta][Lambda]{sub s}, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 33%. We obtain a suite of associated results which are discussed in detail in this dissertation alongside the main results.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book excerpt: The CDF experiment, which uses p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.9 TeV produced at the Fermilab Tevatron, is unique in its ability to observe all flavors of B hadrons and measure their properties. Among them, CP violation is of fundamental interest. In the B+ and B° systems, measurements of CP violation parameters performed essentially at B factories have borne out the predictions of CKM model. Little is known, experimentally, about CP violation in the B{sub s}° system. The standard model predicts very little CP violation there, thus any nonzero measurement could be an indication of new physics. In this thesis, we will report on the very first flavor-tagged analysis of approximately 2000 B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays reconstructed in a 1.35 fb−1 data sample collected at CDF. This channel is sensitive not only to the width difference [Delta][Lambda] in the B{sub s}° system but also to the CP violation parameter [beta]{sub s}. The final result we obtain is a confidence region in the two dimensional space of [beta]{sub s} and [Delta][Lambda]. Assuming the standard model predictions of [beta]{sub s} and [Delta][Lambda], the probability is 15%, corresponding to 1.5 Gaussian standard deviations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CP violating phase [beta] j/[Psi][Phi]s is measured in decays of B0s → J/[Psi][Phi]. This measurement uses 5.2 fb-1 of data collected in √s = 1.96 TeV p$\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF Run-II detector. CP violation in the Bs0-$\bar{B}$s0 system is predicted to be very small in the Standard Model. However, several theories beyond the Standard Model allow enhancements to this quantity by heavier, New Physics particles entering second order weak mixing box diagrams. Previous measurements have hinted at a deviation from the Standard Model expectation value for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] with a significance of approximately 2[sigma]. The measurement described in this thesis uses the highest statistics sample available to date in the Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decay channel, where J/[Psi] → [mu]+[mu]- and [Phi] → K+K-. Furthermore, it contains several improvements over previous analyses, such as enhanced signal selection, fully calibrated particle ID and flavour tagging, and the inclusion of an additional decay component in the likelihood function. The added decay component considers S-wave states of KK pairs in the Bs0 → J/[Psi] K+K- channel. The results are presented as 2-dimensional frequentist confidence regions for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] and [Delta][Gamma] (the width difference between the Bs0 mass eigenstates), and as a confidence interval for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] of [0.02,0.52] U [1.08, 1.55] at the 68% confidence level. The measurement of the CP violating phase obtained in this thesis is complemented by the world's most precise measurement of the lifetime [tau]s = 1.53 ± 0.025 (stat.) ± 0.012 (syst.) ps and decay width difference [Delta][Gamma] = 0.075 ± 0.035 (stat.) ± 0.01 (syst.) ps-1 of the Bs0 meson, with the assumption of no CP violation.

Book excerpt: We report on the final measurement of the CP-violating $B_s^0$ mixing phase $\beta_s^{J/[psi][phi]}$ in √s = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using a sample corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, we fit the decay-time evolution of $B_s^0$ → J/[psi] (→ [mu]+ [mu]-) [phi] (→ K+ K−) decays in which the b-quark content at production and the CP parity of the final state are identified. The interference of decays with and without mixing renders the $B_s^0$ mixing phase observable. The phase is determined to be -0.06

Book excerpt: The author reviews basic aspects of the phenomenology of CP violation in the decays of K and B mesons. In particular he discusses the commonly used classification of CP violation--CP violation in the mass matrix, in the interference of mixing with decay, and in the decay amplitude itself--and the related notions of direct and indirect CP violation. These concepts are illustrated with explicit examples. The author also emphasizes the highlights of this field including the clean observables B(K[sub L][yields][pi][sup 0][nu][anti[nu]]) and A[sub CP] (B[yields] J/[Psi]K[sub S]). The latter quantity serves to demonstrate the general features of large, mixing induced CP violation in B decays.

Book excerpt: After its formulation in 1960's the Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions has gone through an impressive series of successes, begun with the discovery of neutral weak currents [1] and the experimental observations of the massive carriers of weak interactions, the W± and Z0 bosons [2], [3]. High precision measurements performed at LEP and SLAC test the validity of the theory to an unprecedented level of accuracy and do not show any significant deviations with respect to the Standard Model predictions. One of the attractive features of the Standard Model is the description of the phenomena which violate the matter-antimatter symmetry (CP), and this violation uniquely depends (in the quark sector) on a weak phase in the matrix describing the couplings among different quark flavors. CP-violation was discovered in 1964 as a tiny effect in the mixing of the K0 - $\bar{K}$0 system [12] but, after a few decades of study of the physics of K mesons, no strong confirmation of the Standard Model can be obtained on the mechanism which generates CP-violation. On the other hand the physics of B mesons is suitable for a pretty large number of measurements which can confirm or disprove this aspect of the theory. The main goal of the BABAR and Belle experiments physics program is to test the description of CP-violation and flavor physics mainly from the decays of Bu and Bd mesons. Soon after the beginning of data-taking in 1999, CP-violation was discovered in the interference between mixing and decay in the golden channel B0 → J/[Psi]}K0 [17] [18], while in 2004 a large direct charge asymmetry was observed in the B0 → K+[pi]- channel [16]. There is a third kind of CP-violation which can be exhibited by the Bd - $\bar{B}$d system, the so called CP-violation in mixing. The Standard Model predicts this asymmetry to be small, possibly out of reach of current experiments, but several New Physics models contain new particles and couplings which can enhance it up to detectable levels. In this thesis we search for CP-violation in Bd - $\bar{B}$d mixing at the BABAR experiment. We reconstruct one of the two B mesons produced at the PEP-II electromagnetic collider using the partial reconstruction technique, while the flavor of the other B is inferred by the charge of a kaon identified among its decay products. Given the smallness of the physical asymmetry we want to measure, a crucial aspect of this analysis is the control of spurious charge asymmetries arising from the interaction of particles with the detector material. We accomplish this by using a control sample of charged kaons on the same data we use in our analysis. After a brief introduction of the theoretical framework and the phenomenology of the decays of B mesons at a B-factory (chapters 1 and 2), we will review in chapter 3 the current experimental results on this topic. We will then describe the characteristics of the collider and the experimental apparatus (chapter 4) used to perform our measurement. The available dataset and the event pre-selection techniques are treated in chapter 5, while the analysis method is discussed in detail in the following one. In chapters 7 and 8 the definitions of the probability density functions used to model each component of our sample are given and then they are tested in samples of simulated data. Toy and reweighted Monte Carlo data are used in chapter 9 to test the sensitivity of our fitting procedure to the physical parameters related to CP violation; chapter 10 discusses the possibility of modeling some of the components of our sample directly on the data. Finally the fit on the real data sample is described in chapter 11 and the treatment of systematic uncertainties is done in chapter 12, while the final result is given in chapter 13.

Book excerpt: In a universe dominated by matter, the source of CP violation may explain one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics: what happened to the antimatter? The Standard Model successfully describes CP violation in the B+ and Bd0 systems, yet insufficiently accounts for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The Standard Model predicts a small value of CP violation in the Bs0 meson system, which has only recently been experimentally tested. A measurement of large, anomalous CP violation in the Bs0 system would be a clear indication of new physics sources beyond the Standard Model. This dissertation describes a study of CP violation in approximately 2000 Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decays reconstructed in a 2.8 fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 Run II detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This data was provided by p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV delivered by the Tevatron accelerator between April 2002 and August 2007. Flavor-tagged Bs0 → J/[Psi]([mu]+[mu]-)[Phi](K+K-) decays and an angular analysis are used to study the time evolution of the final state angular distributions. From this analysis, we measure the width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, BsL and BsH , to be [Delta][Gamma]s = 0.19 ± 0.07 and the CP-violating phase [Phi]s = -0.57-0.30+0.24.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb−1 recorded at the?(4S) resonance and 3.9 fb−1 off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the?(4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/? K{sub S}°,?(2S) K{sub S}°,?{sub c1} K{sub S}°, J/? K*° (K*° → K{sub S}°?°) and J/? K{sub L}°, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(*)?/?/1 and J/? K*° (K*° → K?−). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. A neural network tagging algorithm is used to recover events without a clear lepton or kaon tag. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. Wrong-tag probabilities, the time-difference resolution function, and the B°-{bar B}° oscillation frequency?m{sub d}are measured with a sample of about 6350 fully-reconstructed B° decays in hadronic flavor-eigenstate modes. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds?m{sub d} = 0.516 ± 0.016 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) ps−1. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin2? is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B° decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin2? = 0.59 ± 0.14 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst), demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. We also determine the value of the CP violation parameter.
