Book Synopsis A History of Greek Mathematics, Vol. 1 by : Thomas Little Heath
Download or read book A History of Greek Mathematics, Vol. 1 written by Thomas Little Heath and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Mathematics, Vol. 1: From Thales to Euclid The idea may seem quixotic, but it is nevertheless the author's confident hope that this book will give a fresh interest to the story of Greek mathematics in the eyes both of mathematicians and of classical scholars. For the mathematician the important consideration is that the foundations of mathematics and a great portion of its content are Greek. The Greeks laid down the first principles, invented the methods ab init'io, and fixed the terminology. Mathematics in short is a Greek science, whatever new developments modern analysis has brought or may bring. Book Synopsis The Beginnings of Greek Mathematics by : A. Szabó
Download or read book The Beginnings of Greek Mathematics written by A. Szabó and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was first published, more than five years ago, I added an appendix on How the Pythagoreans discovered Proposition 11.5 of the 'Elements'. I hoped that this appendix, although different in some ways from the rest of the book, would serve to illustrate the kind of research which needs to be undertaken, if we are to acquire a new understanding of the historical development of Greek mathematics. It should perhaps be mentioned that this book is not intended to be an introduction to Greek mathematics for the general reader; its aim is to bring the problems associated with the early history of deductive science to the attention of classical scholars, and historians and philos ophers of science. I should like to conclude by thanking my translator, Mr. A. M. Ungar, who worked hard to produce something more than a mechanical translation. Much of his work was carried out during the year which I spent at Stanford as a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. This enabled me to supervise the work of transla tion as it progressed. I am happy to express my gratitude to the Center for providing me with this opportunity. Arpad Szabo NOTE ON REFERENCES The following books are frequently referred to in the notes. Unless otherwise stated, the editions are those given below. Burkert, W. Weisheit und Wissensclzaft, Studien zu Pythagoras, Philo laos und Platon, Nuremberg 1962.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Mathematics, Vol. 1 The idea may seem quixotic, but it is nevertheless the author's confident hope that this book will give a fresh interest to the story of Greek mathematics in the eyes both of mathematicians and of classical scholars. For the mathematician the important consideration is that the foundations of mathematics and a great portion of its content are Greek. The Greeks laid down the first principles, invented the methods ab initio, and fixed the terminology. Mathematics in short is a Greek science, whatever new developments modern analysis has brought or may bring. The interest of the subject for the classical scholar is no doubt of a different kind. Greek mathematics reveals an important aspect of the Greek genius of which the student of Greek culture is apt to lose sight. Most people, when they think of the Greek genius, naturally call to mind its masterpieces in literature and art with their notes of beauty, truth, freedom and humanism. But the Greek, with his insatiable desire to know the true meaning of everything in the universe and to be able to give a rational explanation of it, was just as irresistibly driven to natural science, mathematics, and exact reasoning in general or logic. This austere side of the Greek genius found perhaps its most complete expression in Aristotle. Aristotle would, however, by no means admit that mathematics was divorced from aesthetic; he could conceive, he said, of nothing more beautiful than the objects of mathematics. Euclid was a no less typical Greek. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Meeting under the Integral Sign?: The Oslo Congress of Mathematicians on the Eve of the Second World War by : Christopher D. Hollings
Download or read book Meeting under the Integral Sign?: The Oslo Congress of Mathematicians on the Eve of the Second World War written by Christopher D. Hollings and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historically unique conditions under which the International Congress of Mathematicians took place in Oslo in 1936. This Congress was the only one on this level to be held during the period of the Nazi regime in Germany (1933–1945) and after the wave of emigrations from it. Relying heavily on unpublished archival sources, the authors consider the different goals of the various participants in the Congress, most notably those of the Norwegian organizers, and the Nazi-led German delegation. They also investigate the reasons for the absence of the proposed Soviet and Italian delegations. In addition, aiming to shed light onto the mathematical dimension of the Congress, the authors provide overviews of the nineteen plenary presentations, as well as their planning and development. Biographical information about each of the plenary speakers rounds off the picture. The Oslo Congress, the first at which Fields Medals were awarded, is used as a lens through which the reader of this book can view the state of the art of mathematics in the mid-1930s.
Book Synopsis Advances in Pure and Applied Algebra by : Ratnesh Kumar Mishra

This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume documents the contributions presented at the CONIAPS XXVII International Conference on Recent Advances in Pure and Applied Algebra. The entries focus on modern trends and techniques in various branches of pure and applied Algebra and highlight their applications in coding, cryptography, graph, and fuzzy theory. The book comprised a total of eighteen chapters, among which the first fourteen chapters are devoted to Algebra and related topics, and the last four chapters are included applied mathematics parts. The chapters present the latest research work being done on the frontiers of the various branches of algebra as well as showcase the cross-fertilization of the ideas and connection among these branches.Covering a broad range of topics in pure and applied Algebra, this volume would appeal to a wide spectrum of the researcher in Mathematics. The main aim of this monograph is to contribute to the development of pure and applied Algebra and hence we purposely sought a cross-section of topics in Algebra and encouraged expository presentations and research papers that provide an innovative link between research areas of Algebra and the field of their applications. This volume will be useful not only to experts but also to beginners of research in algebras and related topics.
