Guide to any examina tion, but is intended to introduce the really earnest student to the study of Geology. Examinations, how ever, are not to be ignored 3 it is indisputable that they are important and indispensable aids to education; but in my experience I find that a student who makes them the ultimatum of his study not only loses the true pleasure derived from an acquaintance with the secrets Of nature and the accumulation of intellectual wealth, but he Of ten acquires a secret distaste for the subject Of his studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Geology Ix the endeavour to keep this Text-book abreast of the onward progress of Geology in all departments of the science, I have subjected the present edition to a thorough re vision. By abridgm ent, where this was possible, space has been found for important additions, while by the adoption of a difi'erent type from that used in the first edition, the amount of information given has been largely increased without any serious augmentation of the bulk of the volume. I have been particularly careful to add greatly to the number of references to special sources of information, which are of so much service to the student who seeks to carry his studies beyond the limits of a mere text-book. In the revision, I have derived assistance from several friends, to whom I desire to record my obligations, especially to Professor Bonney, Professor T. Rupert Jones, and Mr. W. Topley. However, it has seemed to me, for some time, that there is need of a Geology in which more stress is placed upon the dynamic aspect of the subject than is commonly given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Biennial Report on the Geology of Alabama Geological Map. - Of the map accompanying the report, I can only say, that although as accurate as the materials col lected, and the extent of my observations would allow, yet it is by no means offered as a complete geological map of the State, for that would imply that the study of the geology itself was completed. It presents at a glance, a general view of the ge ological structure of Alabama, shows the relative position and extent of the great groups of rocks, laid down, it is true, with some approach to correctness, but it claims no more. To con struct a geological map with absolute accuracy, is a werk in volving much time, and is rarely attempted excepting in cases where a corps of assistants can be employed. Such are the maps of the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, where every formation is accurately laid down from actual measurement, and sections constructed with similar care. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood.
