Book excerpt: One of the main economic players responsible for Singapore’s economic success is its small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs. Their overall success has helped propel the country and its people forward. From economic policies to politics, Singapore is a planned and regulated economy. Singapore’s economic success story is actually the result of a form of capitalism carefully calibrated and controlled by the government. An important element or aspect of good critical success factors (CSFs) emerges from the role being played by the government. The existence of good government or public policies that are pro-business is vital for the success of firms. Despite the fact that government policies and CSFs are widely studied in areas around the world including in Singapore, there is no comprehensive prediction model available to test if firms have potential to be successful or are more prone to failures. Much research investigates the non-financial factors contributing to success versus failure of small firms, but empirical tests of the predictability of these factors are less common. This book, which is primarily quantitative/ positivist in nature will attempt to fill this gap.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why many of the over 28 million small businesses in operation in the United States do not survive past the first five years? Is it the economy? The stock market? Or is it something else? Two years of research by Jamey Long on factors affecting small business survival revealed a direct relationship linking management and leadership skills. Management and Leadership Skills That Affect Small Business Survival presents the research leading to this discovery that focuses solely on small businesses in the United States and teaches them how to improve management and leadership skills so that they can survive past the historical five-year failure mark.

This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: 1.1, The challenge of attracting, motivating and retaining Chinese employees: In the last decade, as a result of the advancing globalization, the People s Republic of China (PRC) has become a focus of interest for Western companies. The country is home of 25 % of the world s population and has maintained an economic growth rate of 8 % during the last twenty five years. How can companies position themselves best to profit from this fast-growing economy and prevail against an increasing competition? Along with a massive inflow of foreign investment, Western management practices and philosophies have been brought into China. Thus, every day, foreign managers in subsidiaries of Western companies have to confront decisions about money, benefits and other different forms of incentives that can be used for attracting, motivating and retaining the local Chinese employees to ensure the competitive advantages. The introduction of Western incentive systems in China can be problematic as some Western incentive practices may contradict the norms of Chinese culture and the socialist ideology. Unsurprising that issues of human resource management, particularly in the attraction of employees, the performance motivation and the staff retention, are seen as the main difficulties in the Chinese operations of Western companies. Consequently, the question arises if customary incentive practices that have been proved useful back home can be transplanted to the Chinese subsidiaries of Western companies and if so, how? It is common knowledge that the compensation packages offered by companies to their employees have a great influence on the profitability. The better the foreign managers are able to align decisions about motivational incentives with the challenges presented by the values and the motives of the employees, the likelier it is for the organization to achieve competitive advantages. Thus, especially in the international context the major limitation of contemporary pay systems is the degree to which individual attitudes and preferences are ignored. . 1.2, Conceptual design of Incentive systems for Chinese employees: Objectives and methodology of the thesis: The aim of this thesis results directly from the mentioned problem. On the basis of a literature review that is combined with an analysis of applied incentive systems, it sets out to explore why Western approaches may or may not be applicable in the Chinese context and how [...]

Each chapter is dedicated to an examination of a different factor affecting firm productivity - innovation, ICT usage, on-the-job-training, firm age, access to credit, and international linkages - highlighting the differences in firm characteristics, behaviors, and strategies. By showcasing this remarkable heterogeneity, this collection challenges regional policymakers to look beyond one-size-fits-all solutions and create balanced policy mixes tailored to distinct firm needs. Book excerpt: This symposium explores Chinese people-management as an academic subject, looking at where it is currently going and the likely direction of its progress. After the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China saw the introduction of Human Resource Management (HRM). This book discusses the specific issues which are relevant to its evolution in China, in particular whether there is a dominant ‘paradigm’ in the field and whether there might be a new one in the making. It looks at the possibility of a ‘theory of Chinese management’ or ‘Chinese theory of management’. This comprehensive volume covers a wide range of topics, including charismatic leadership, employee commitment, creativity, ‘guanxi’, job security, knowledge-generation, mentorship, national identity and organizational innovation, all in the context of Chinese HRM. The contributors are experts in their respective fields of management, organizational behaviour, psychology, sociology and related disciplines, and cover a wide range of themes, models and specialisms. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Resource Management.
