Book excerpt: Providing many lessons learned from past silo fires coupled with in-depth knowledge from experts, this book explains current prevention measures in detail -- helping to prevent future damage. It covers numerous types of fire detection devices and fire fighting equipment, backed by extensive data tables listing fire and explosion characteristics of bulk materials, color photographs of silos on fire and documentation of firefighters' actions. In addition, diagrams and formulas as well as pre-prepared check lists are included for risk assessment and fire fighting actions. Possibly lifesaving reading for chemists in industry, engineers, chemical engineers, health officers, environmental consultants, instructors in the chemical industry, as well as chemicals suppliers and safety officers.

Book excerpt: Every year in North America there are fires & feed damage caused by spontaneous combustion & heating. This bulletin explains the spontaneous combustion process, the factors that lead to fire in hay & silage, and how to prevent fires in silos & hay storage facilities. Information is included on recommended safe silage/hay moisture levels, how to assess fire risk, how to determine silage moisture content using a microwave oven, and hay/silage fire extinguishment procedures.

Download or read book Extinguishing Smouldering Fires in Silos written by Maarit Tuomisaari and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustible, porous materials may self-ignite during their storage time in silos as a result of internal heating. The self-ignition process may be slow, and it results in smouldering fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish. Suitable means to fight the smouldering fire were studied both theoretically and experimentally. General heat and mass transfer equations for porous media subject to fires and suppression were written. The equations together with dimensional analysis revealed critical parameters, like the grain size and moisture content, affecting the combustion and suppression process, but they also revealed the complexity of the problem. Experimental results of over 50 tests with varying combustibles and suppression agents were used as the basis for proposed qualitative guidelines on how to fight a smouldering silor fire. Among the potential gaseous agents, CO2 was found to be the most efficient one. Low expansion foam was also found to be apotential candidate, but its applicability requires further confirmation. Quantifying the guidelines required a whole new study on the detection of a smouldering fire. The same detection system should be capable of monitoring the suppression process and-most importantly-verifying the extinguisment.

Book Synopsis How to Prevent Grain Silo Fire and Explosion Risk by : Paul Stanford Kupakuwana Cpeng
Download or read book How to Prevent Grain Silo Fire and Explosion Risk written by Paul Stanford Kupakuwana Cpeng and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins by describing grain dust and its potential to create a hazard in a grain silo leading to explosions. It then discusses the explosion that occurred at the Grain Marketing Board's Lions Den Silo, near Chinhoyi in Zimbabwe in 2018, and which caused four deaths, injuries to some personnel and significant damage to property. It then examines the immediate possible causes of the fire release and the response of the Zimbabwe government to it. The book then draws broader conclusions about the need to develop new methodologies of risk and loss limitation, which are especially appropriate to silos, in which health and safety plays a significant role.
