Book excerpt: Postcolonial studies has taken a significant turn since 2000 from the post-structural focus on language and identity of the 1980s and 1990s to more materialist and sociological approaches. A key theorist in inspiring this innovative new scholarship has been Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu and Postcolonial Studies shows the emergence of this strand of postcolonialism through collecting texts that pioneered this approach-by Graham Huggan, Chris Bongie, and Sarah Brouillette-as well as emerging scholarship that follows the path these critics have established. This Bourdieu-inspired work examines the institutions that structure the creation, dissemination, and reception of world literature; the foundational values of the field and its sometimes ambivalent relationship to the popular; and the ways concepts like habitus, cultural capital, consecration and anamnesis can be deployed in reading postcolonial texts. Topics include explorations of the institutions of the field such as the B.B.C.'s Caribbean voices program and the South African publishing industry; analysis of Bourdieu's fieldwork in Algeria during the decolonization era; and comparisons between Bourdieu's work and alternative versions of literary sociology such as Pascale Casanova's and Franco Moretti's. The sociological approach to literature developed in the collected essays shows how, even if the commodification of postcolonialism threatens to neutralize the field's potential for resistance and opposition, a renewed project of postcolonial critique can be built in the contaminated spaces of globalization.

Book excerpt: The book is to learn not only the meaning of the nosological conditions that we are dealing with, but to relate them to the Organs, Viscus, Status criteria or Elements and locate them in the main meridians and secondary vessels pointed out by the Chinese Acupunctural wisdom millennia ago, in order to understand their influence within the Generative and Inhibitory Cycles that represent the medical situation that we strive to correct. Adding this new point of view about the “Affected Vessel Criterion” will allow us to complete the wide range of diagnostic possibilities, to achieve a specific and accurate treatment that will provide our patients with the maximal potential that Acupuncture is capable of offering. According to the nature of the syndrome, this new concept of “Affected Vessel Criterion” as another diagnostic research option will significantly help the readers to rationally and specifically select the best-focused treatment for each particular patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With these fundamental lectures on speech eurythmy – given just months after his course entitled ‘Eurythmy as Visible Singing’ – Rudolf Steiner completed the foundations of the new art of movement. In connecting to the centuries-old esoteric and exoteric Western traditions of ‘the Word’ – the creative power in the sounds of the divine-human alphabet – he gave it concrete form and expression in the performing arts, education and therapy. Although aimed primarily at the professional concerns of eurythmists who perform, teach or work as therapists, the lectures offer a wealth of suggestions and insights to anyone interested in the arts. For this new edition – freshly translated by Matthew Barton and introduced by Coralee Frederickson – the original shorthand transcripts have been compared exhaustively with typed records and the notes of course participants. These notes included numerous sketches of movements, gestures and choreographies, many of which have been reproduced here to complement the text. Also featured is an appendix comprising facsimiles and transcripts of Rudolf Steiner’s preparatory notes, programmes of the eurythmy performances given during the course, and accounts by Steiner published in the Society Newsletter. Finally, there are recollections by course participants, additional sketches of forms and movements, Marie Steiner’s original foreword, and 30 pages of colour plates featuring blackboard drawings and eurythmy forms. New revised and expanded edition; Trans. by M. Barton; Intro. by C. Frederickson (Fifteen lectures, Dornach, Jun.-July 1924, GA 279); 512pp + 32pp colour plates; 23.5 x 15.5 cm

Book excerpt: Kalyug Kand is an epic poem in English, about three hundred pages long. It comes in rhyme and rhythm, like Hindi poetry. English poetry doesnt come like this. All of its characters are taken from Ramayana. These characters, while speaking in their roles as per episode from Ramayana, in between start speaking of what is wrong with todays world. This book does not fall into any known category of books. The revelations of this book are not available with the world of scholars. It shows that the world governments fight against extremism and terrorism is like fighting flood with firefighting equipment. It tells the extremists and terrorists that they do not know their aims, and what they have taken up is not the question of weapons. The book is written in seven chapters, but its theme is not divided in chapters. It takes up the question of governance of public life and traces its genesis to Rig Veda and Old Testament.
