Book excerpt: A computer simulation model, FARSITE, includes existing fire behavior models for surface, crown, spotting, point-source fire acceleration, and fuel moisture. The model's components and assumptions are documented. Simulations were run for simple conditions that illustrate the effect of individual fire behavior models on two-dimensional fire growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire management simulation models are used to predict the impact of changes in the fire management program on fire outcomes. As with all models, the goal is to abstract reality without seriously distorting relationships between variables of interest. One important variable of fire organization performance is the length of time it takes to get suppression units to the fire. Because the location of the fires cannot be predicted and because suppression units are not always available at a particular base location, the types of units sent and their arrival times vary This aspect of fire modeling, which is especially important in representing simultaneous fires and in choosing base locations, has not previously been examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on the enormous literature applying statistical methodology and modelling to environmental and ecological processes. The 21st century statistics community has become increasingly interdisciplinary, bringing a large collection of modern tools to all areas of application in environmental processes. In addition, the environmental community has substantially increased its scope of data collection including observational data, satellite-derived data, and computer model output. The resultant impact in this latter community has been substantial; no longer are simple regression and analysis of variance methods adequate. The contribution of this handbook is to assemble a state-of-the-art view of this interface. Features: An internationally regarded editorial team. A distinguished collection of contributors. A thoroughly contemporary treatment of a substantial interdisciplinary interface. Written to engage both statisticians as well as quantitative environmental researchers. 34 chapters covering methodology, ecological processes, environmental exposure, and statistical methods in climate science.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel and vegetation spatial data layers required by the spatially explicit fire growth model FARSITE were developed for all langs in and around the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area in Idaho and Montana. Satellite imagery and terrain modeling were used to create the three base vegetation spatial data layers of potential vegetation, cover type, and structural stage. Fire behavior fuel models and crown characteristics were assigned to combinations of base layer categories on these maps by local fire managers, ecologists, and existing data. FARSITE fuels maps are used to simulate growth of prescribed natural fires in the wilderness area, aiding managers in the planning and allocation of resources. An extensive accuracy assessment of all maps indicated fuels layers are about 60 percent accurate. This methodology was designed to be replicated for other areas.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire managers are increasingly concerned about the threat of crown fires, yet only now are quantitative methods for assessing crown fire hazard being developed. Links among existing mathematical models of fire behavior are used to develop two indices of crown fire hazard-the Torching Index and Crowning Index. These indices can be used to ordinate different forest stands by their relative susceptibility to crown fire and to compare the effectiveness of crown fire mitigation treatments. The coupled model was used to simulate the wide range of fire behavior possible in a forest stand, from a low-intensity surface fire to a high-intensity active crown fire, for the purpose of comparing potential fire behavior. The hazard indices and behavior simulations incorporate the effects of surface fuel characteristics, dead and live fuel moistures (surface and crown), slope steepness, canopy base height, canopy bulk density, and wind reduction by the canopy. Example simulations are for western Montana Pinus ponderosa and Pinus contorta stands. Although some of the models presented here have had limited testing or restricted geographic applicability, the concepts will apply to models for other regions and new models with greater geographic applicability.

Book excerpt: Given a variable rate of fireline construction and an elliptical fire growth model, two methods for estimating the required number of resources, time to containment, and the resulting fire area were compared. Five examples illustrate some of the computational differences between the simple and the complex methods. The equations for the two methods can be used and programmed to estimate fire size and perimeter, time-to-containment, and the number of resources required as a function of spread rate.
