Download or read book Computational Geomechanics written by Arnold Verruijt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-03-31 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed the development of computational geomechanics as an important branch of engineering. The use of modern computational techniques makes it possible to deal with many complex engineering problems, taking into account many of the typical properties of geotechnical materials (soil and rock), such as the coupled behaviour of pore water and solid material, nonlinear elasto-plastic behaviour, and transport processes. This book provides an introduction to these methods, presenting the basic principles of the geotechnical phenomena involved as well as the numerical models for their analysis, and including full listings of computer programs (in PASCAL). The types of geotechnical problems considered cover a wide range of applications, varying from classical problems such as slope stability, analysis of foundation piles and sheet pile walls to finite element analysis of groundwater flow, elasto-plastic deformations, consolidation and transport problems.

Book Synopsis Constitutive Modelling in Geomechanics by : Alexander Puzrin
Download or read book Constitutive Modelling in Geomechanics written by Alexander Puzrin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between the traditional Geomechanics and Numerical Geotechnical Modelling with applications in science and practice. Geomechanics is rarely taught within the rigorous context of Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, while when it comes to Numerical Modelling, commercially available finite elements or finite differences software utilize constitutive relationships within the rigorous framework. As a result, young scientists and engineers have to learn the challenging subject of constitutive modelling from a program manual and often end up with using unrealistic models which violate the Laws of Thermodynamics. The book is introductory, by no means does it claim any completeness and state of the art in such a dynamically developing field as numerical and constitutive modelling of soils. The author gives basic understanding of conventional continuum mechanics approaches to constitutive modelling, which can serve as a foundation for exploring more advanced theories. A considerable effort has been invested here into the clarity and brevity of the presentation. A special feature of this book is in exploring thermomechanical consistency of all presented constitutive models in a simple and systematic manner.
Book Synopsis Boundary Element Method in Geomechanics by : W.S. Venturini
Download or read book Boundary Element Method in Geomechanics written by W.S. Venturini and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-08-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical techniques for solving many problems in continuum mechanics have experienced a tremendous growth in the last twenty years due to the development of large high speed computers. In particular, geomechanical stress analysis can now be modelled within a more realistic context. In spite of the fact that many applications in geomechanics are still being carried out applying linear theories, soil and rock materials have been demonstrated experimentally to be physically nonlinear. Soils do not recover their initial state after removal of temporary loads and rock does not deform in proportion to the loads applied. The search for a unified theory to model the real response of these materials is impossible due to the complexities involved in each case. Realistic solutions in geomechanical analysis must be provided by considering that material properties vary from point to point, in addition to other significant features such as non-homogeneous media, in situ stress condition, type of loading, time effects and discontinuities. A possible alternative to tackle such a problem is to inttoduce some simplified assumptions which at least can provide an approximate solution in each case. The validity or accuracy of the final solution obtained is always dependent upon the approach adopted. As a consequence, the choice of a reliable theory for each particular problem is another difficult decision which should be 2 taken by the analyst in geomechanical stress analysis.

It enables students, scientists and engineers to assemble their own computer programmes to produce numerical results to solve these problems. The first three editions of Programming the Finite Element Method established themselves as an authority in this area. This fully revised 4th edition includes completely rewritten programmes with a unique description and list of parallel versions of programmes in Fortran 90. The Fortran programmes and subroutines described in the text will be made available on the Internet via anonymous ftp, further adding to the value of this title.
