Book excerpt: This book is intended as a textbook providing a deliberately simple introduction to finite element methods in a way that should be readily understandable to engineers, both students and practising professionals. Only the very simplest elements are considered, mainly two dimensional three-noded “constant strain triangles”, with simple linear variation of the relevant variables. Chapters of the book deal with structural problems (beams), classification of a broad range of engineering into harmonic and biharmonic types, finite element analysis of harmonic problems, and finite element analysis of biharmonic problems (plane stress and plane strain). Full FORTRAN programs are listed and explained in detail, and a range of practical problems solved in the text. Despite being somewhat unfashionable for general programming purposes, the FORTRAN language remains very widely used in engineering. The programs listed, which were originally developed for use on mainframe computers, have been thoroughly updated for use on desktops and laptops. Unlike the first edition, the new edition has problems (with solutions) at the end of each chapter. Electronic copies of all the computer programs displayed in the book can be downloaded at: http://www.worldscientific.com/doi/suppl/10.1142/p847/suppl_file/p847_program.zip.

Book excerpt: Finite Element Analysis for Engineers introduces FEA as a technique for solving differential equations, and for application to problems in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Science & Mechanics. Intended primarily for senior and first-year graduate students, the text is mathematically rigorous, but in line with students' math courses. Organized around classes of differential equations, the text includes MATLAB code for selected examples and problems. Both solid mechanics and thermal/fluid problems are considered. Based on the first author's class-tested notes, the text builds a solid understanding of FEA concepts and modern engineering applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geared toward undergraduate and graduate students, this text extends applications of the finite element method from linear problems in elastic structures to a broad class of practical, nonlinear problems in continuum mechanics. It treats both theory and applications from a general and unifying point of view. The text reviews the thermomechanical principles of continuous media and the properties of the finite element method, and then brings them together to produce discrete physical models of nonlinear continua. The mathematical properties of these models are analyzed, along with the numerical solution of the equations governing the discrete model. Though the theory and methods are sufficiently general to be applied to any nonlinear problem, emphasis has been placed on problems in finite elasticity, viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and thermoviscoelasticity. Problems in rarefied gas dynamics and nonlinear partial differential equations are also examined. Other topics include topological properties of finite element models, applications to linear and nonlinear boundary value problems, and discrete models of nonlinear thermomechanical behavior of dissipative media. This comprehensive text is valuable not only to students of structural analysis and continuum mechanics but also to professionals researching the numerical analysis of continua

Book excerpt: Advanced Finite Element Method in Structural Engineering systematically introduces the research work on the Finite Element Method (FEM), which was completed by Prof. Yu-qiu Long and his research group in the past 25 years. Seven original theoretical achievements - for instance, the Generalized Conforming Element method, to name one - and their applications in the fields of structural engineering and computational mechanics are discussed in detail. The book also shows the new strategies for avoiding five difficulties that exist in traditional FEM (shear-locking problem of thick plate elements; sensitivity problem to mesh distortion; non-convergence problem of non-conforming elements; accuracy loss problem of stress solutions by displacement-based elements; stress singular point problem) by utilizing foregoing achievements.
