Book excerpt: Full-size structural lumber under torsion was analyzed using the finite-element method to determine stress distribution. A three-dimensional, homogeneous, orthotropic finite-element model was developed and analyzed using commercially available software, ANSYS®, to increase understanding of stress distribution and failure modes. Analyses revealed that uniform shear stress occurs within the shear span, which begins and ends at a distance of approximately two times the depth plus the grip distance away from each end of the specimen. In addition, finite-element analysis verified that the experimental shear-failure plane that occurs within the shear span is parallel to the grain. Shear slippage is also parallel to the grain, similar to the known shear-failure mode in specimens subjected to transverse loads. Based on results of this study, the torsion test is the best practical method to determine the pure shear strength of full-size, structural lumber.

Book excerpt: A finite element computer code called WESTES was developed to study the influences of laboratory testing equipment on the states of stress and strain induced in cylindrical specimens of earth media. The code can solve general static, axisymmetric, boundary value problems and is programmed to take an incremental, nonlinear constitutive model called the Variable Moduli Model II. Some of the special features of the code include the ability to simulate cyclic (load/unload/reload) laboratory tests using iterative treatments at the load/unload and unload/reload interfaces and special logic to separately handle loading and unloading in the volumetric and deviatoric stress components as dictated by the constitutive model. Download or read book A Finite Element Analysis for Stress Distribution in Gripped Tubular Specimens written by RR. Rizzo and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new elastic finite element program is implemented. The analysis can account for general anisotropy and the three-dimensional nature of axisymmetric composite bodies. Attention is directed to characterizing the anomalous stress distributions which can occur in certain anisotropic tube specimens. For axial- and hoop- wrapped tubes accurate principal properties data can be obtained using classical shell theory and assuming uniform stress at the midlength cross section of the tube. For helically laminated tubes, the degree of accuracy is highly influenced by the geometry. A substantial inaccuracy could occur in strength predictions even for what normally are considered thin tubes. The study also identifies the stress distribution, including interlaminar effects, under the gripped area, which is not possible with any known closed form solutions.

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Hard Turning by Using Ansys/Implicit written by Kunal Saurabh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANSYS/Implicit finite element simulation of hard turning process was performed. The modeling work covers influence of edge size on stresses distribution and estimation of flow stress data. The stress generation on cutting honed edge cutting tool in hard turning was predicted using finite element method of ANSYS/Implicit. The cutting simulation between carbide tool and AISI 1045, AISI 4345, AISI 52100 gave good predictions of stress distribution for the given cutting conditions. The obtained results from FEM indicate that the maximum Von-Misses (effective) stress acting on cutting insert with the hone tool edge while machining of AISI 4340 has the smallest value of 1607 MPa.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability of steel structures is governed by design codes which may vary between countries. These codes may stipulate factors of safety, quality, and loading conditions. The approved steel design codes ensure each structure is designed with the same quality, recommended loading conditions, and safety standards for the design life of the structure. In Canada, steel structures are governed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and designed to CAN/CSA S16-19 - Design of Steel Structures [1]. In the United States, steel structures are governed by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and designed to ANSI/AISC 360-16 - Specification for Structural Steel Buildings [2]. Both Canada and the United States have similar design principles included in their structural design codes. Therefore, the Canadian steel code and the load-resistant factored design sections of the American steel code are almost interchangeable. From the literature review comparing the most current Canadian and American principle clauses, it was identified ANSI/AISC 360-16 [2] provides mathematical equations for checking HSS in torsion and combined loading while CAN/CSA S16-19 [1] advises the user to complete an elastic analysis for verification. While the approach of completing a finite element analysis to the torsion stress is a very precise method, having the option to use theoretical formulas in accordance with limit state design to analyze this condition could be beneficial to practicing engineers. This thesis concentrates on strength verification of the American torsional clause using non-linear FEA techniques with calculated section capacities to determine if the clause can be a potential recommended method of torsion loading assessment. The objective of this work is to develop a practical method of evaluating hollow structural sections subject to torsion and combined loading in Canada. From the research performed, conclusions are made based on the results of the analysis. Recommendations are provided according to the application of the ANSI/AISC 360-16 [2] torsion clause along with the additional research required for validation as an approved design approach in Canada.
