Book Synopsis Burrs - Analysis, Control and Removal by : Jan C. Aurich
Download or read book Burrs - Analysis, Control and Removal written by Jan C. Aurich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many machining operations burrs cannot be avoided. They can affect the functionality and the safe handling of the workpiece in the subsequent processing, and have to be removed by a special deburring process. Toleration of burrs, which are not part of functional edges, depends on their respective shape and size. High inspection effort is necessary to guarantee the workpiece quality. Therefore, the research results on burrs, with a focus on burr analysis and control as well as on cleanability and burr removal based on the presentations held at the conference are valuable for researchers and engineers in manufacturing development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces state-of-the-art experimental and numerical methods and examples for evaluating the drilling performance of engineering and biological materials, particularly in thermal aspects. The authors use a common pathway to present the technological and analytical methods for both industry (metal) drilling and orthopaedic surgery (bone) drilling research, making this book a resource for both industrial and clinical readers who wish to understand the evolution of technologies, techniques and challenges in drilling. The authors also focus on advanced engineering materials, such as titanium alloys and high-strength cast irons, which have broad applications in the automotive, aerospace, medical device and sports industries. This book is a must-read for a broad audience, including engineering students in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses that involve machining processes; for surgery residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons; and for engineers in the medical device industry who develop new bone cutting tools. Bridges the knowledge on drilling from the manufacturing industry to healthcare; Covers the experimental and modeling aspects of drilling thermal analysis; Includes experimental studies that contain parameters and data that emulate practical production and clinical drilling.
Book Synopsis Drilling of Composite Materials by : J. Paulo Davim
Download or read book Drilling of Composite Materials written by J. Paulo Davim and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, the use of composite materials has increased in various areas of science and technology due to their special properties, namely for these application in aircraft, automotive, defence and aerospace industries as well others advanced industries. Drilling is a frequently practised machining process in modern industry owing to the need for component assembly in composite structures. This book aims to provide the research and review studies in drilling of composite materials. The first three chapters provide information on delamination and damage reduction in drilling of composite materials. The following two chapters deal with influence of machining parameters on the delamination. The sixth chapter is focused on modelling of drilling aluminium matrix composites using artificial neural networks. The chapter seventh is dedicated study of analysis of delamination in drilling wood composite medium density fibreboards. Finally, the last chapter of this book is focused on studies on composite drilling - the state of the art. The present research book can be used as for final undergraduate engineering course (for example, mechanical, manufacturing, materials etc) or as a subject on machining/composites at the postgraduate level. Also, this research book can serve as a useful reference for academics, manufacturing and materials researchers, manufacturing, materials and mechanical engineers, professional in composites technology and related industries.

Book Synopsis Force Modeling in Drilling with Application to Burr Minimization by : Jennifer Rose Flachs
Download or read book Force Modeling in Drilling with Application to Burr Minimization written by Jennifer Rose Flachs and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aerospace industry, burr removal is a very important part of the manufacturing process. Stacks of material on sections of an aircraft are assembled and drilled by hand. Due to extensive burr formation the sheets must be destacked so that burrs can be removed and then the stacks are reassembled and fastened together. If burrs are minimized in the drilling process, this would reduce the necessity for the sheets to be destacked and deburred. : One approach to minimizing burrs is to lower the thrust force in drilling through suitable modification of the drill geometry such as the use of a step drill. Although prior researchers have analyzed different drill geometries such as step drills and their effect on hole exit burr formation in the drilling process through experimentation, no work has been reported on modeling and analysis of step drilling forces and their relationship to burr formation as a function of the step drill geometry parameters. Consequently, this thesis focuses on the modeling of the thrust force and torque for step drills and analyzes their relationship with burr size as a function of the step drill geometry parameters. In the first step, a mechanistic model for thrust and torque in drilling is implemented for a standard twist drill. This mechanistic model is then adapted to predict the thrust and torque for a step drill. Subsequently, experiments are performed to validate the mechanistic model and to evaluate burr formation with standard and step drills. The influence of thrust and torque on hole exit burr formation is analyzed for different step drill geometries and experimental feeds and speeds. The results show that the predicted thrust and torque values for both drill geometries are in good agreement with measured values, although the torque model consistently underpredicts. For standard drill geometry in the calibration tests, the average error in the thrust prediction is 7.09% and the average error in the torque prediction is -18.05%. In validation tests, the average error for predicted thrust is 2.29% and the average error for predicted torque is -18.46%. For the step drill model the average error in thrust is 0.72% while the average error in torque is -8.72%. In addition, a reduction in the predicted thrust force for a step drill relative to the standard twist drill is found to correlate well with a reduction in the measured burr size. However, further reduction in the thrust force by varying the step angle and diameter ratio do not correlate well with the measured burr size. Likely reasons for these results are presented in this thesis.
