Book excerpt: 2nd Place is a story of hope and encouragement that speaks to the human spirit. The story is told from the perspective of a young boy named Ricky Workman. The reader gets to watch him grow up, notice his writing improve in his journal, and see him develop into a hard working, loving, and people building man. We also get to see him succeed and fail as a football player and track athlete. There are no obvious antagonists in this story, but Rick still has his share of conflict and struggle. Life experiences challenge him greatly, but he remains true to the principles his parents and grandparents teach him. This book was written in response to a need the author has detected in the youth of today. Our global culture seems so pre-occupied with finishing first that too many individuals simply give up on worthwhile pursuits if there is any doubt in their minds they will be the best. This story is an uplifting, yet real world example of how someone can still feel valued even though they don't win it all. Every school library needs high interest, low to medium vocabulary books that arouse the interest of young people. 2nd Place delivers beautifully in that regard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the world's best bands and businesses have in common? More than you'd think. In fact, the winning teams that built Microsoft, Disney, and Starbucks have much in common with the Rolling Stones and U2. Like a business, a successful rock band is made up of both visionaries and devoted followers, leaders and team players. But the band only achieves success when the entire group is pulling in the same direction. When all members understand the parts they must play within the group contributing creatively and playing to their strengths that's when the hits start coming. In JAM! Jeff Carlisi, former lead guitarist and songwriter of 38 Special, tells his own unique story of rising to the top of the charts and the business world, offering one of the most fun, original approaches to team-building and acquired business savvy. Filled with stories of the rock n' roll life, like that of the architect who became a guitar superstar and the multimillion-selling track that almost never was, this is an insider's view to making it big and the pitfalls to avoid along the way. Each chapter examines a key moment in the development of a band formation, early success, internal crises, falling out of the spotlight and demonstrates how executives can use those lessons to crank their own businesses to eleven. JAM! also includes insights from seasoned musicians who have played in some of the world's best-known bands, including the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, Night Ranger, and the bands of Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Joan Jett, and Sheryl Crow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Team Sports Training: The Complexity Model presents a novel approach to team sports training, examining football (soccer), rugby, field hockey, basketball, handball and futsal through the paradigm of complexity. Under a traditional prism, these sports have been analyzed using a deterministic perspective, where the constituent dimensions of the sportsmen were independently examined and treated in isolation. It was expected that the body worked as a perfect machine and, once all the components were maximized, the sportsmen improved their performance. If the same closed recipe was applied to all the players that formed part of the squad, the global team performance was expected to be enhanced. As much as these reductionistic models seem coherent, when contrasted in practice we see that the reality of team sports is far more different from the closed conditions in which they were idealized. Team sports contain variable, heterogeneous and non-linear constrains which require the development of a different logic to organize their training. During the last years, ecological psychology, the dynamical systems theory or the constraints-led approach have opened interesting fields of research from which many conceptual foundations can be applied to team sports. Based in this contemporary framework, the current book presents the study of the players and the teams as complex systems, using coordination dynamics to explain the emergence of the self-organisation episodes that characterize them. In addition, this thinking line provides the reader with the ability to apply all these innovative concepts to their practical training scenarios. Altogether, it is intended to challenge the reader to re-think their training strategy and to develop an original theory and practice of training specific to team sports.

Book excerpt: What differentiates this new series of books from the books and magazines people have used in the past is that each of the six books focuses on a different league - 5x5 mixed, AL-only, NL-only, 4x4 mixed, AL-only, and NL-only. The projections and dollar values for players can vary up to 50% from league to league. Drafting with the help of a magazine not tailored to your league specifications is a recipe for disaster - yet millions of people do so every year. With your Fantasy Scouting Report in hand, you can rest assured that your projections are accurate. Each book also has special Quick Lists designed to help you find what you need in the limited time you have between picks. Players are ranked by actual scoring category points so you can compare players intelligently and quickly. Categories like ERA, WHIP, and BA are weighted for IP and AB, vitally important but often overlooked. Also included is a unique quantitative analysis of the best prospects for 2005.

Book excerpt: Crises happen. When they do, organizations must learn to effectively communicate with their internal and external stakeholders, as well as the public, in order to salvage their reputation and achieve long-term positive effects. Ineffective communication during times of crisis can indelibly stain an organization's reputation in the eyes of both the public and the members of the organization. The subject of crisis communication has evolved from a public relations paradigm of reactive image control to an examination of both internal and external communication, which requires proactive as well as reactive planning. There are many challenges in this text, for crisis communication involves more than case analysis; students must examine theories and then apply these principles. This text prepares students by: Providing a theoretical framework for understanding crisis communication Examining the recommendations of academics and practitioners Reviewing cases that required efficient communication during crises Describing the steps and stages for crisis communication planning Crisis Communication is a highly readable blend of theory and practice that provides students with a solid foundation for effective crisis communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like a pilot need not know the pure physics behind his flight, a skilled poker player need not know the pure mathematics behind winning poker play. Too often have poker books taken a purely theoretical approach to poker instruction. This book is the only poker book available that caters specifically to online sit'n'go (SNG) single'table low'limit Texas Hold'em tournaments. More importantly, it is the only poker book that guides the reader on a progressive path upward through the various limits, with only the information necessary to win with any bankroll or skill level to beat that specific low limit. Presented in a series of steps, the book provides guidelines that help tell the reader when to move up to a higher limit. SNG's have very predictable durations (40'60 minutes) so the reader could effectively set aside blocks of time to play. Unlike other games, the book contends that SNG's have very predictable win/loss rates, can be defeated systematically, and offer an innate system of progression. That is, the various buy'in amounts can be viewed as a climbable ladder that helps gauge success. As with any gambling, winning is not a sure thing. But this book gives you the tools you need to win.
